What causes a person to cough up blood?

I know there are plenty of medical problems that can make someone hack up a blot of blood. I was wondering if any astute member here could list some/them?

Diseases and conditions may include:

* Blood clot in the lung
* Bronchiectasis
* Bronchitis
* Cancer
* Cystic fibrosis
* Goodpasture's syndrome
* Inflammation of the blood vessels in the lung (vasculitis)
* Inhaling blood into the lungs (pulmonary aspiration)
* Irritation of the throat from violent coughing
* Nosebleed that drips blood down into the lungs
* Laryngitis
* Pneumonia
* Pulmonary edema
* Systemic lupus erythematosus
* Tuberculosis

Diagnostic tests that can make you cough up blood include:

* Bronchoscopy
* Laryngoscopy
* Lung biopsy
* Mediastinoscopy
* Spirometry
* Tonsillectomy
* Upper airway biopsy

haha pretty good list.

If the question was in all seriousness...

Most common cause is bronchitis, which usually consists of tinges of blood mixed with sputum.
Worrisome things that I see everyday, which change with age, travel patterns, smoking habits include cancer, pulmonary embolism (clot in the lung), tuberculosis, pulmonary edema from a congested heart.
Rarer causes are the autoimmune diseases, which include Goodpastures, Wegener's granulomatosis, CF, Aspergillosis.

Improper sword swallowing has been known to cause a similar effect. My best shot at a medical term would be something like selfinflictus tracheotomy. 😀

Being stabby stabbed. I've seen a lot of horror movies where someone takes a pointy to the gut and blood starts water-falling out of their maw. But I guess maybe a small stabby, like a poke, might do for coughing it instead.

Are you asking for you or someone else, or for curiosity's sake?

As long as we're being thorough, we should mention that inhaling severe irritants, such as smoke or toxic gases such as phosgene may cause this. Also a ruptured larynx or trachea, or a penetrating wound to the lung (as by gunshot or stabbing) could lead to coughing up blood - though of course other symptoms would make the cause obvious in a case like that.

Lung cancer can cause it. So if you cough up blood, go see a doctor ASAP. (but then again, IF you have lung cancer, by the time you start coughing up blood it might be better to go to an undertaker first to arrange your funeral)

Most likely the "See a doctor before you drop dead of either illness or wild anxiety"-syndrome.

I have a cold and have been coughing an aweful lot lately. Last night, I doubled over (as per usual) with a coughing fit and a little blood came out.

I have seen many people that have Developed Ulcers(SP) from extreme amounts of stress

Do you smoke?

Did you recently have pneumonia or bronchitis?

Do you have flu like symptoms?

Are you kidding me??? I cannot express how serious coughing up blood is!!!!

Go see a doctor asap!!!!!

It sounds like irritation from the constant coughing has left things raw. But, the only way to be sure is to see a doctor. If you're coughing hard enough to be doubling over regularly, you need to get checked out...blood or no blood. It's not something to be taken lightly....or take your chances on. If that's all it is, at least you'll know...and maybe get some meds to help clear things up. Even if there's no infection, there are things that can help you clear the congestion more easily/comfortably.

Go today!

I must add Sarcoidosis to this list.

I've coughed up blood before. Not a lot, but it was likely because I had a cold and was smoking. My coughs were pretty fucking violent, so I probably just scratched something in my throat rather than my lungs were actually bleeding.

Or I have the bubonic plague and I'll be dead soon.

Most likely the doctor is gonna say that it's from bronchitis/airway irritation! (or at least that is what I would say). Unless you have other risks for why you would have other causes (smoking, inhalation injury), then your doctor may choose to get a CXR or a sputum sample. Wish you the best!

Alright.

It's been about a day and I haven't coughed up any more blood so far. It could have been a one time thing. I don't know.

I want to wait it out for a bit longer to see what happens. I don't want to go to a doctor just yet because , on the whole, they are mostly quacks that only hold an interest in dumping the newest medication down your throat to make a little money on the side.

I'm also a stubborn jackass.

I am kind of holding on to the pretenses that a person can cough up a bit of blood every now and then and still survive. I mean, look at Clint Eastwood in Grand Torrino...GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

Seriously though, I will be monitoring myself just to make sure everything is kosher.

Or the closest facsimily thereof.

SPOILER ALERT!!

You realize that he died at the end of the movie, right? You realize a large part of the reason he decided to sacrifice himself like he did was because he was about to die anyway, right? From a disease which symptoms included the coughing up of blood? That's not quite the analogy I would want if I was hacking up blood! Furthermore, even he went to see a doctor!

But, if your cough is subsiding, and there is no more blood in it, you probably don't need to see one now. From your description, it sounds like you had some bronchitis, and coughed a lot which caused so much irritation to your respiratory tract that it caused a little bleeding. However, if it starts up again, I'd definitely go get it looked at.

Good going. You just wrecked the ending for those who haven't seen it yet!:rowfull:

Sometimes, I feel that I have something left to do in this world before passing on.

I figure that is why I drew the parallel.

Ooooooooooooor listening to too much Bjork.

I'm just looking out for those who are as drunk and stupid as me...Who didn't even notice the disclaimer at the top.

Stupid idiots. How can you not see the disclaimer???

You stupid, stupid, drunk stupid people!

Ooooooooooooor listening to too much Bjork.

I don't like Bjork. She's a Djork!

Same here and worst. It's my primary aim to live a drugless life, so unless it will be in between life and death, I don't take any medicines or drugs of any sort.

I don't take any meds or non-prescription medication either, but I wouldn't wait until I cough up lung before seeing a doctor.

At least you can go for an x-ray or a ct-scan. Trust me, there is no medication prescribed for coughing up blood. Besides, you can go to a homeopathic doctor after your results come back.

Listen to me. Get help. Being over cautious is better than neglecting the issue. The last thing that the members of the TMF want to hear is that you let a type of lung cancer spread.
