As sports are on my mind often, I wanted to post a thread asking what the most memorable sporting event anyone has ever been to is? It can be any sport.
For me, there are a few that come to mind. I was at Game 7 of the 1986 World Series between the Red Sox and Mets. I went to two Mike Tyson fights in 1988, including the 91 second one where he knocked out Michael Spinks just a minute and a half into the very first round. I was at the 1977 All Star Game with my father at Yankee Stadium on about a 105 degree night in July, 1977. There was also a Knicks playoff game in 1997 at Madison Square Garden against the then Charlotte Hornets. I would have gone to at least one game of the 2000 Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees, as my father and I were talking at that time, and he had a ticket for me, but lucky me had the flu all that week, so I couldnt make any of the games.
I do go to one baseball game a year between the Braves and Phillies in Philadelphia, and while I enjoy those greatly, I still consider the most memorable events either playoff games or championship fights where so much is on the line. Although I have never been a Mets fan, if I had to pick just one of these that was most special, I'd have to say Game 7, 86 World Series. How often can one say they have been to a deciding game of a World Series?

Mine would be game 4 of last year's Calder Cup (AHL hockey), with my Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins vs. the Milwaukee Admirals. While it wasn't my first Pens home game, it was my first time at a championship game, and it was packed....a sea of white shirts (for big home games, Pens fans all wear white...we call it the white-out 🙂 )...granted, they got shellacked and lost, completing a Milwaukee sweep, but something in the third period happened that I'll never forget. After the starting goalie, Andy Chiodo, got slammed for 5 goals, he was replaced for a while by Marc Andre-Fleury. When it got to 4 minutes left, Coach Therrien put Andy back in to finish the game, as a nod to the fact Andy was instrumental in getting the Pens there in the first place. 8,000 people (myself included) all stood up for a standing ovation for this classy move. It was just an awesome sight to behold.

I've never been to a World Series game, much less the final game. My most memorable pro sporting event ever attended was a baseball game, however.

It was October 9, 1988, which was the fourth game of the National League Chamionship Series that year. The Mets led the Dodgers 2 games to 1 in the NLCS, and led in that game, 4-2, going into the top of the 9th inning. With Dwight Gooden breezing along, have shut the Dodgers out since their 2 runs were scored in the first inning, all the arrogant Mets fans around me were already counting themselves as being up 3 games to 1, and surely going to the World Series.

John Shelby led off the top of the 9th with a walk, and Mike Scioscia astonished the crowd with a game-tying home run into the Mets' bullpen in right field 😀 . (Astonishing since Scioscia had only 4 homes runs all year up to that point.)

Kirk Gibson hit a home run in the top of the 12th inning to give the Dodgers a 5-4 lead. At the time, he was 1 for 16 (.063) in the NLCS.

In the bottom of the 12th, the Mets got the bases loaded with one out. But Jesse Orosco induced a harmless pop-up by Darryl Strawberry, and then Orel Hershiser, the previous day's starting pitcher, came in to face Kevin MacReynolds with the bases loaded and two outs. On a 1-1 count, Mac popped a weak fly ball towards short center field. With two out, the runners were, of course, off at the crack of the bat.

Had it dropped in, two runs would have scored and the Mets would have won, 6-5. But John Shelby, the Dodger centerfielder, came charging in at top speed, lunged forward, and caught the short fly ball just below knee level. 😀 😀 Final score, Dodgers 5, Mets 4.

PS: The Dodgers went on to win the NLCS in 7 games, and then beat the Oakland Athletics, 4 games to 1, in the World Series.

Not to piss off the Dodgers fans but that 88 Dodgers team was the worst baseball team I ever saw win a championhip.

Greatest sporting even I ever attended was Bobby Jones (very ordinary pitche for the Mets) one hit shut out over the Barry Bonds Giants in the playoffs.

How great was the achievement of the 1988 Dodgers, then, beating teams that you view as clearly their superiors in talent. 😀
I guess they just had more heart. 😛

buffalo bills playoff game against the houston oilers...jan 2...can't remember the year,i know i was 10 at the time (sorry getting close to be 28...and already senile 😛 )...anyway the bills won 17-10 and one of the oilers ran into i think it was our goalpost trying to catch the ball.

Joe Carter hitting the World Series winning homer off Mitch Williams in Game 6 of the 1993 World Series.

I remember attending a Blue Jay game one July evening when they first started playing at the Skydome in the 80's......it was sunny to begin with so the roof was open but it as it became cloudy and got darker they started to close the roof. It takes about 30 min. to close the roof and it started to rain ......and as the roof came closer and closer to closing it started to rain harder and harder......at one point just a few minutes before it closed completely the pitcher was dry and under the roof and the batter, the catcher and ump were getting heavily rained upon....there was one pitch through the rain then the Ump put his hands up and thought this is silly and stopped the game while the roof closed a few minutes later.

The crowd went nuts, as if we just hit a homer to win in the 9th, at that point no one else in the world could close the roof in a ball game like that.....we were just proud of our new stadium.
