Allow me to explain....

I recently came across the website TVTropes.org- http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage
which describes and illustrates, often in SCREAMINGLY hilarious ways, many of the various tropes (defined by the site as "devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations") that exist in all fiction. There are possibly thousands of entries, from "Action-Adventure" tropes, through "Comedy", "Romance", and even "Webcomics" to the always-useful "Applied Phlebotinium".

The bit that I found especially useful was that it allowed me to finally sum my real-life character up in 2 short phrases. I am a Chivalrous Pervert who is easily Distracted by the Sexy.

Now, in case that sounds bad, let me explain, with a little help from TV Tropes.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChivalrousPervert: "He's the Plucky Comic Relief who can't stop ogling the ladies. But unlike some who ogle the ladies, he actually cares about them as people. Woe betide anyone who wrongs women, for he's watching you like a hawk — when he's not watching them, that is. Undoubtedly the best type of pervert."

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DistractedByTheSexy: "For some men, it's very easy to forget what they are doing when a gorgeous woman strolls past and lose control, doing things like walking into walls, tripping over themselves, dropping fragile objects, etc."

Yeah, that's me. Doomed to be the comic relief, but at least I'm good-natured about it, and I really do care about people. Especially women (even though I know they can take care of themselves perfectly well, I still can't help myself- I want to be their knight in shining armor).

So I was just curious... has anyone else seen themselves reflected in fiction, and in what way? (It doesn't have to be something identified on the site I mentioned, anything will do.) It's a human trait to see ourselves in others; art holds a mirror up to life, as they say. It can be anything; your personality seen in a fictional character, a moment of your life story seen in a movie, your emotional state perfectly captured by a song you heard at just the right moment.

Anybody?

I am tempted to go with "Amazonian Beauty." Except that I am no where near that buff. Maybe I'll balance that out with "kuudere." That one sounds cool. Or kuu. Whichever.

The problem with tropes is also it's benefit. How vast it's subjects are. I could spend literally two hours pinpointing ones that "best" describe me, only to find one that's even better 5 minutes later

"How very right you are," said the Knight In Sour Armor...

I found TV Tropes a bit of a mess written in too much of a geeky idiolect that assumes an over-familiarity with the terms used. Just a self-contained microverse of in-jokes we're expected to look up , but haven't the time.

If anyone says that they have found something that best describes them or their personality, whether it's a character in a play or movie, a song or poem, a phrase etc., I don't believe it. I can identify with some lyrics or poetry on a certain level but in no way does either describe me to a tee. I couldn't do that myself with any sort of accuracy other than to say that I'm moody and that could apply to anyone if they are honest. We all have our moods. Emotionally as well as individually we are far too complex to be summed up so easily.

You are right Major, but I gotta say that there are aspects of me that are summed up perfectly, to the point that I now refer to myself by those tropes. No kidding. And due to something that happened Friday night, I have moved farther down on the Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism... a looong way down..... but this is perfectly normal for a Knight In Sour Armor such as myself.

Do people know what I'm talking about? No. But then again, they never did before, because I've always read way more than is good for me and I enjoy flashing my knowledge, so no loss there.

Okay Lee47, I can respect that. If you can claim some of those aspects, let them sum you up perfectly and refer to yourself by them, fine. I can identify with certain aspects as well but I can't claim them as my own, although there may be certain similarities. From what I have read, viewed or experienced, nothing has come close enough yet for me to say; that's me.

Respect to you as well, sir, I would never insist that others use the same terms as I do to evaluate themselves. I for one resist all attempts by others to 'psychobabble' me- which if I remember correctly means that I'm in "denial", another term that I reject 😀.

Probably my tendency to think of life in 'story' terms goes back to my early exposure to Joseph Campbell's "Hero With A Thousand Faces", "Transformations of Myth Through Time", and especially "Myths To Live By", which, even though they're getting a little dated, are truly wonderful books. The chapters about the Arthurian romances especially speak to me and make me realize that there is a deeply romantic soul under all my cynicism. The trouble is that the world keeps taking advantage of it when I let it out to play. Thus leading to more cynicism... :sigh:
