Actress Lindsay Lohan said she has been a member ok AA for about 2 years now yet says she had not had a drink in 7 days? Now my understanding is she is only 20 so what is she doing drinking in the first place?

Im really not a big fan of many young performers now under 30 or 35 as most of them I find hard to take seriously. I mean Paris Hilton? Even American Idol performers as most sing well, none has a distinct talent. I had a guy play me a Biggie Smalls CD and all he rapped of was having sex from behind with a girl at the movies.

Anyway am I missing somthing here or just getting old?

You're not getting old, its just the mainstream's taste in celebrities seems to be going for the "white trashy" appearence these days. Just take a look at how popular Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan are with the general crowd. I myself can't stand most of the "celebrity" status these days. But you know what they say "you'll never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator." If the people want trash, give them trash and watch the cash flow in.

Or perhaps I'm just cynical.

You are so right Chosen, and tis a sad commentary indeed on how far we have fallen as a society.See Howard Stern, see also Geraldo Rivera. The list could go on,but suddenly i feel an upset stomach coming.

Those two are some of the reasons I don't watch tv anymore. There is such a shortage of quality programming its appalling. Even the news channels are nothing more than propaganda these days. "Fair and Balanced" my arse FOX 🙂

I hate to sound like a snob here, but my t.v. watching is for the most part confined to the History Channel,Discovery,National Geographic etc.I do watch football, and local news, but other then that i find little of intrest.

no " Phil " you're not cynical.. I have the same view.. I can't stand much of the younget celebs. these days either.

Another thing is all this "reality tv" which is really all junk. They have had reality TV on PBS for years but at least it's television that challenges you. But all you see on the commerical networks is human dysfunction passing off as entertainment.

Reality T.V.-What an oxymoron.

It's not just film and TV...its EVERYWHERE...and it sucks..thats why I live in my own little world and dont bother with today's mainstream masses..unless of corse I want a good laugh. For TV its Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Rockford Files and Incredible Hulk for me anymore..and for music it's deep classic disco, classic jazz, classic soul/r&b and classic rock. To hell with today's poor excuse for shit..i'll live in my past dreamworld when TV & Film & Celebs were classy, when music was actually music and when people knew how to live and have harmless non threat fun! :couch:

Glad to see all this getting brought up and folks feeling the same as I do!!! You know, me and my best bud talk bout this shit all the time...think about whats happened since roughly 1992 or so...with everything (and the real scary part is, most of socciety dont realise theres something not right about all this..brainwashed robots I call the masses).

This damn moronic reality TV bullshit has basicly taken over...whatever happened to the "made for tv" movie of the week? Don't see them anymore. Now it's all "watch now as this person dives into a pit of snakes, will they do it?" or "today on the real world...bobby joe john gets in a fist fight with joe bob dan..is this the end of their friendship?" WHO GIVES A FUCK!!!!!!!!!!! GIVE ME REAL NON JUVINILE TV BACK!!!

They predicted this shit back in the 80's sci fi stuff on how the future would be a disaster..anyone remember the movie "The Running Man"? If not, go watch it...I guarentee that movie is gonna be a reality in the next 5 years or less...sad!

Yeah, I pretty much don't care about Lindsay Lohan. She was actually kind of cute before she got all skinny and slutty...
As for the underage drinking, thats her call. As long as she doesn't get caught...I mean, I drank before I was 21 (shh, don't tell my folks!) 🙂

Just getting old Brian. The old trouble of trying to follow a jet engine with a piston propeller engine that belongs to a former generation. The good news is that unless you die young, it is going to happen to everyone.

It's a hard concept to grasp, isn't it? We just want to believe that someone so young can't possibly even ATTEMPT to commit themselves to such self destruction. But they do. I think what makes such the impact is that it is put out for the whole world to see. Hearing about a young girls struggle with an addiction is such a shock.

It hits pretty close to home for me. I did my first drug and took my first drink when I was only eleven years old. I had already been smoking for a year by that time. Twelve years later, I finally got help after a vicious overdose. One of many, I might add.

Unfortunately, my use of drugs and alcohol was not casual. From the age of eleven and up, it progressively got worse. It started with the kiddie stuff like pot, LSD, Mushrooms, and then I went for the harder stuff. The kind that cleans out your bank account and stops your heart. I was a gutter rat. I hung around with gutter rats. I didn't care that it was below freezing or that I didn't know where I was, or that I was laying on a sidewalk unable to move, or that my friend blew his brains out that very morning. At least I was high while I was doing it. That, unfortunately, is the powerful grip of escapism.

Until I got cleaned up, I can honestly say that the last time I was straight was when I was a kid. I know that it's hard to believe me. Some might even think I'm making this up. I know that if I were reading this, I wouldn't believe it either.

But, unfortunately, this is the kind of stuff the general populace dosen't know about. Or turn a blind eye to. It's just too inconceivable. And the strangest thing is that even *I* sometimes find myself in shock when I read about these types of cases.

For Hollywood, this behaviour is the rule. Not the exception. I think that's sad.

Brianspencer66, you are not getting too old. You just have a set of moral values. Which is a hell of a lot more than those tabloid twits do. I'm happy that lindsay Lohan got help while she was still young...But let's just hope she holds strong.

But not Paris Hilton, though. She can choke on her own tongue and die for all I care. :jester:

Overpaid, unimpressive, self-absorbed, egostistical and boring describes a lot of "younger" people these days, especially in the celebrity world, IMHO, although it spills over into the mainstream too (yawns...) Young folks who've accomplished nothing of any real consequence but think they're God's gift. Spare me. As Goddess would say, "Pass the popcorn..."
XOXO

I'm no fan of Lohan, but at least she made her name doing something, even if she's not particularly good at it (acting). The people who really get to me are the Paris Hiltons and Nickie Richies of the world, who are famous for no real reason other than they have wealthy parents and party a lot. Nickie Richie's about as much of an airhead in real life as you'd expect her to be, for the record.

Who cares?

Besides, it's not like she's the only one of her kind.

And you shouldn't be surprised about underage drinking. Celebrity or not, young adults enjoy their liquor.

I have no idea who Lindsay Lohan is, though the name sounds familiar.

Well I don't follow celebrity crap much, but I think you're witnessing the coarsening of American culture, so no, you're missing nothing, and yes, you're getting old. It won't be something you can appreciate because you didn't grow up with it, it seems insubstantial and beneath you, and indeed, it is. Salvation for those growing up in this era and accustomed to it comes when they're exposed to and rediscover older works... Real, good, and classic music, movies and entertainment.

Eventually, I suspect there'll be a revival of class in American entertainment and culture, but I suspect it won't come until stodgy banner-wavers of oppressive moralities stop trying to be political powers or ethics police. They put themselves up as targets to be lambasted, and those in authority are always the most fun to cast stones at. The coarsening of culture is, at least in part (IMHO), a backlash to entities trying to enforce one brand of morality or another. Ridiculing these entities, flouting their standards and defying them is the outlet.

Lindsay Lohan is a complete other set of problems, troubled family background and all. But from appearances, she's trying to clean herself up and become something substantial rather than wastrels like Tara Reid who seem trapped in their routines and have to capitalize on their uselessness on "E!"

You know somthing? your correct! The only problem is with my generation we choose and picked our heros. Yours seems to buy yours packaged already from "Stodgy Old Banner Wavers" witness crap like American Idol. Or the garbage on the radio TV and movies now? Where is the rebellion in any of that, its all shock for the sake of shock. So while you may ridicule many in your generation are still allowing the wool to be pulled over your eyes.

Wait, is this antagonism? 😕 Whatever, friend. Just making a point. I can only guess you identify strongly with "stodgy banner-wavers of oppressive moralities".

But please, don't mistakenly associate me with some "American Idol" generation, or any generation, for that matter, merely because of my age. I'm an individual with intelligence and taste above all that. Take care.

Well age wise you must belong to some generation surely? And I never said said you looked at American Idol. I said your generation, relax young man the taste police arent going to drag you off to a turkish prison!!

As for "stodgy Banners-wavers of oppressive moralities" well thats a term you coined not me.
But before you cast your first stone look around at some of your college campuses these days (its no longer the 60s) and Im sure there are enough S.B.W.O.M. on many campuses these days.
