So, Over the years I've just about exhausted all of the "half day" and "one day" drives from New Orleans for weekends away. That leaves me in a perplexed state.

I'm thinking about taking a 3 or 4 days mini-holiday at the New Year but can't decide what to do. I thougth I'd ask this well versed crowd for opinions. Don't limit it based on my time contraints. I'll be more than happy to use a good destination at a later time! 😀

Where do you like to go? What's so alluring about it? Make me want to go there!! Please? 🙂

Cleveland I just love the city, East Side of Chicago Pizza is good, the winking lizard is good

New Orleans and Memphis are definitely a lot of laughs... 😉

Philadelphia has it's giggly moments as well...

I'm also told that California has it's perks.

I dont go on vacation. Havent been on a real week long type of flying trip in years. In recent years I've just done things like overnight and two or three days away in places not too far. When I used to go on regular vacations, back in the late 80s and 1990, my favorite spot was Paradise Island, Bahamas, across the bridge from Nassau. The food was wonderful, and I liked the fact that I could gamble at 18, and the atmosphere. The only drawback used to be that since Nassau was so close to Florida, the weather really wasnt that great. I was there 5 times between 1988 and 1990. The first time, in April 1988, the weather was gorgeous, sunny and 80 degrees every day. After that trip, I went there in January two different years, and also in May and June two different years. The weather all of those times was bad. May and June were hot and humid, with constant thunderstorms, and the two times in January were overcast and very cool, not much above 70 F. Due to this, there wasnt much else to do there but gamble, see a show, and eat. I know Paradise Island has changed greatly in the 13 plus years since I've been there, and I'd like to go back. One day I will.

Nawtee Danimal~!

I can agree with your views of N'awlins and Memphis! I was thinking of a less....giggly vacation! **GASP** **FAINT*"*

Hawaii sounds nice, but I live on a beach. I'm rarely inclined to visit one on vacation. I'm sure I'd feel MUCH differently once I'd been though! 😀

I'm thinking mountains or snow.

Jo, now remembering the laughs....

Funny - New Orleans is my favorite place to vacation. Ironic, huh Jo?

Washington DC is a great spot. One of the best parts of choosing that area is that it has a great public transport system - a cheap and clean subway that is closely monitored and patrolled by law enforcement, which means that you probably won't get mugged on it. Although there are three airports in the area, fly into Reagan National to use the public transportation.

The regular tourist monuments are nice but the best thing in my opinion is the Smithsonian Institute. This is a collection of 20 some buildings/locations each with it's own specialty - my personal favorites are the Air & Space and Natural History museums, and the zoo.

If you have time, take in the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. If you knew someone who died in Vietnam, that war memorial is also a very cathartic experience.

Visit on a weekday and drop in on your Senator/Representative. Keeps 'em on their toes and they'll probably have some freebies for you. (IMO, it never hurts to be able to say you're on a first-name basis with Senator Bullshitter.)

why not las vegas? good food, entertainment, and such. its a contained and exciting locale.

I have been to Aruba, Bermuda, Montego Bay, Jamaica, Virgin Islands, and I must say if you want to see great beaches, crystal clear water, those are the place for you. Perect sand to bury someone in and tickle them to death!! I know I did😀

Never been on a real vacation. However, I've been dying to visit NYC, LondonUK, Nashville, Gatlinburg, and Memphis, Tennessee, NJ, Germany(Deuseldorf and Berlin) CA(want to see the ocean), Florida(one word-disney!) Chicago, and the Carolinas

I really like Las Vegas and I am NOT that much of a gambler, just dropped a few quartes in the casino's to say I did it, spent a few moments at the poker tables.
But really the site seeing is really great in Las Vegas, good shows.
Each Casino is themed so you can simply walk the first levels of the casino's and enjoy yourself.
The other cool thing about Las Vegas is it is close to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam.
However do NOT go by car to see these two items.
Take a helicoper tour!! it is $400($200 a piece) but you get a guided flying tour over the Hoover Dam and its 5 "reservoirs", the lower part of the Grand Canyon and they set you down IN THE GRAND Canyon and you eat lunch from a cliff in the middle of the Canyon!!!

Driving to the Grand takes all day and you stand there and go,
"WOW, awesome" and drive back to Las Vegas, instead you fly, it takes oh 3 hours, you get a guided tour of the area and local history and the helicoper guys know how to fly!!!

Also Ireland is just amazing...there really are 40 colors of green, I have seen them myself! Great people, if you go to Ireland take a "Pub Tour", basically you stay in little hotels near pubs and take in the local people and avoid the major tourist stuff.

I love Myrtle Beach but lately it has gotten a bit over crowded, although of course that involves mostly sand...
