If something happens very rarely it's said to happen "once in a blue moon" which refers to something the moon does every few years. I'm not sure what it does exactly, turn blue I assume. It happened last year but I think I missed it.

A "blue moon" is a way of refering to two full moons in the same month. Since the length of a month conforms roughly to the length of the lunar cycle, this is an uncommon occurance. What the "blue" part of it means exactly, I have no idea. Sounds like time for a web-serach.

No, I believe the reference of "once in a blue moon" comes from the fact that, after the Gunpowder Plot failed, there was so much gunpowder in the night air that it gave the moon a blue colouring; this has only happened the once, ergo the saying.

I was half-right, I guess - visibly blue moons are caused by smoke and dust in the air, though it was Krakatoa that caused the most famous blue moon, not gunpowder. 😛
