It drives me crazy when people disable embedding on youtube, and I've been trying to figure out why anyone would even bother to select that option. What do you get out of it when you disable embedding?

People can still link to the clip by URL so I just can't puzzle out how that makes things in any way better or different for the person posting the clip.

I am a big idiot when it comes to this stuff Jeff. What do you mean by embedding?

embedding is when you put a youtube clip on any other website, like this

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8lXdyD2Yzls&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8lXdyD2Yzls&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

You do it by cutting and pasting the code next to the video clip on any youtube page, next to the word "embed"

But youtube has an option to disable embedding. Like if you go to this page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BLc2n5ssZ4 next to the word embed, you'll see "embedding disabled by request" or something.

And for the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would do that or what they get out of it.

Is it possible that some people figure that they'll have fewer views and, therefore attract less attention to something that youtube might otherwise pull on them? Or, perhaps they don't want it spread all over and think that will slow people down? Or...ah, hell! I don't know! 😉

I usually see that "embedding disabled by request" on music videos that are put on there through the music label or the artist themselves. That might have something to with royalties or something and copyright infringement or whatever.

I heard somewhere that making it embeddable makes it easier to take the audio off of it, which is why it's mostly done with official music videos and stuff. I can't remember where I heard it though, so it might be totally wrong.

But yeah, biggest pain in the ass ever. YouTube is a big old fart-face since Google bought it.

Sorry to slightly derail the thread Jeff but on this note *points above* I have to agree with because it pisses me off even more so than not being able to embed a video (I agree with that too), but ever since Google bought it, their search function is beyond my comprehension or short attention span's grasp. I used to be able to find things SO easily and now everything's all weirdly listed and squished together in stupid playlists that don't make any sense. :ranty:

AND they got rid of so much content! *throws rocks at the Google-ized version of YouTube*

Did they? You mean actual videos?! Is that why I can't find anything? I thought it was how they're Googlized their search/squish function and lumped everything up like in Gmail. Which I HATE. I can't stand Gmail. I wanna throw rocks at it.

He's not talking about Google or music labels doing it, it's when random Joe Blow decides to disable it on a video he doesn't even own. I personally think people do it to force you to go to their page/channel. I don't think they realize they'll get more views after it's linked. That or they honestly think that forcing you to their page to look at that awesome music video will suddenly awaken a long dormant desire in yourself to watch their video of them sledding with uncle Bob. It's annoying.

Bob. :cry1:

Yeah, I hate it too. Especially when it's something that may only have been downloaded once or twice and can't be found anywhere else. Of course, these times have been rare for me, and at least we still have the URL option.

Perhaps they want you to read their sassy comments posted with the clip.

Or they're just trolling people like you.

I would say it is simply the fact that they don't want just anybody posting it on any website? I can kinda see that though because if a site "embedded" it and I was not a supporter of that site it might make me a little upset.

peace out,
daddy

Rofl!!! Inside joke really, but thank you so much for posting that clip!! :jester:

I agree... drives me crazy when embedding isn't allowed 🙁 I don't have an answer for it, but it sure does get under my skin sometimes, lol.

Ya know, this makes me wonder: do embedded videos still have those advertisements that show up along the bottom of the video? Coz ... that could probably explain why embedding would be disabled.

Thanks for the explaination. I see what you mean.
