That's why. The Russians are my favourite people in the history of the world ever; they're ruthless, beligerent, hard as nails and don't give a fuck about the West or the East or anything, they just go about their Russian business being Russians and spitting on anyone who tries to tell them different. That thing in Kosovo when their troops took the airport and refused to hand it over to NATO. The shit with the Caucasus oil fields, and Putin's assertion that Russia needs to be a major energy producing power in the world. The refusal to extradite a man who killed a Russian in London, most likely on the orders of the Moscow government, because the puny UK is no threat to Mother Russia, and then the ensuing diplomatic tit-for-tat that has recently culminated in the arrest of a British politician's son in Russia on trumped up drink-driving charges. The general unwillingness to back down to the West or to lick American arse for a chance to snuffle at the trough like the Chinese seem to be doing at the moment, and the fact that their answer to any and all requests that the West makes of them seems to be "No. Fuck off.". Even their national anthem is fantastic.

Here's hoping they get their economy sorted and start being a proper superpower again soon. Long Live The Republic! 😀

Putin may have gained power in yet another time of economic, political & social vulnerability for Russia,
--but he doesn't represent all Russians!!

Just as Bush doesn't represent all Americans... though that may be an unfair pairing where Putin is concerned...

I'm definitely not defending Putin's administration, as far as I'm aware of his/its activities (I need to look in more depth before commenting further, though I'm familiar with most of what you've listed)

but as far as the Russian people are concerned,
they've *needed to be "hard as nails" as they've really never had a truly stable (or beneficial...) political or socio-economic infrastructure.

(If only Lenin hadn't died before Russia became stable enough for him/his party to establish the democracy at the end of the rainbow...
--As I'm sure you know, they didn't see Stalin coming until he gained a stranglehold from within....
and there went the beginnings of democracy that Lenin had attempted to sow, at least among his inner circle).

In short, the Russian people have clearly had a REALLY rough deal... between self-serving "royalty" and self-serving Communist regimes

as have the Chinese, similarly --- HUGE country/populace, and a small, selfish governing body, still almost medieval in their treatment of the everyday slob.

But the Chinese aren't exactly "snuffl(ing) at the (American) trough" either, really,
since we Americans are unfortunately, admittedly buying up all their slave-made goods 🙁
while they continue to support the Sudanese government that's responsible for the genocide in Darfur.... They aren't (yet?) responding to international disgust...

So the Red or formerly Red Peoples are still victimized by their little oligarchies.

This may be a topic more suited for the P&R forum, but let me chime in anyways.

I HOPE Russia becomes a superpower again. I HOPE AND HOPE AND HOPE they do.
In the days of 2 superpowers....to a degree it was easy to see that everyone chose sides (or in some cases were forced to choose a side) either with the communists or against them.
Back then it was almost black and white to whom which was the right side to be on. In those days there was no envy or jealously of the US, because the US was needed to keep the USSR in check. Nowadays as the ONLY superpower on Earth, as my favorite comedian Dennis Miller said..."The United States all at the same time is the most hated, loved, feared, and admired, country in the world. The United States IS Frank Sinatra." I agree with that. The US is all things to all people. If there was another superpower in the world...the jealously factor would again be hidden from view as people would be glad that there was someone out there to protect them.....just in case.
However, they will never be a vast superpower as they once were. All of their satellite countries...gone and except for Security Council veto power they hold very little actual power. Even their mighty military is now seen as almost comical...consider how their "top-flight" equipment did in Iraq and a few other squirmishes. And if they were to modernize now...they would be so far in debt....heck they would surpass the US in that area.....but if they did that, we would start seeing the bread lines again.

I have doubts that there'll ever be a 'two-superpower' arrangement on the world stage. I think that was a specific accident of history, formed by World War II and kept in shape by the politics of the Cold War world.

Even if Russia did gain more power on the world stage (which I see as being fairly likely, at least in Europe, because of the Energy crisis), I don't think things will ever end up as they was in the Cold War. I think we're entering a period of multiple small but powerful political blocks. The U.S, the E.U. (which even though its military is limited is expanding into Eastern Europe and possibly the middle-east with Turkey), China, Russia...

Contrary to poular belief, she was not part of the zombie program, but a failed experiment attempting to mate a flesh spore with a teepee. Upon reaching maturity, it began to emit a hideous wailing noise. Canadian Military intelligence (also known as the cub scouts) felt that we had stumbled upon a new psychological weapon (akin to the famous german stuka bomber) to help us rid the world of our secret enemies (the ukrainians). To test subject: 2043-X5, it was sent south to the U.S. where it would be observed in the field.

Last known reports indicate that subject: 2043-X5 disappeared and is now rumored to be preforming in some freak show in Las Vegas.
