Mr. Bella, who spends no money and never asks for anything and is *the* best hubby on the Earth, wants an XBox 360 for Xmas. I am soooo not a gamer, I know nothing (seriously I got bored with Centipede in 1983 and never looked back :fish:). What should I be looking for? Do I have to buy the Elite, or is the regular one enough? What games are you people playing, Gears of whatever, Halo 12...help a girl out, what am I buying to make him happy :triangle:

(And yes I asked him, those of you who were here last week know how chatty he is 🙄 )

The main difference between the packages is the size of the hard drive, that was never a big issue for me, so I just got the basic package. If he wants to play original XBox games, then you do need one with a hard drive in order to be backwards compatible. It's really an issue of how much crap you think you're going to want to keep stored on your system at any given point. The more you want to save, the bigger hard drive you'll need.

As for games. Just as far as stuff that's out recently, Gears of War 2 kicks ass. I have not touched Fable II yet due to fear that I'll then be sucked in for a month and end up screwing over my academic work, but if it's anything even remotely like the first one, it should be epic.

If he likes role playing games (what a loaded term here) I would suggest Fallout 3 or Fable II.

For war type shooters I would suggest Battlefield Bad Company, Call of Duty (World at War) or Gears of War 2.
If he enjoys racing a new Need for speed game has been released (undercover I believe it is called). Projecy Gotham racing is quite fun as well.

If you buy him the latest version of Xbox Magazine he can try demos off the disk on his 360 as well. If you don't he can simply download demos from xbox live.

Also remember a second controller for when he has friends over.

As for different 360 packages, pick the one that best fits your price range. Each step up has advantages over the last. 360 can make a fine media center as well if you don't already have one.

i think the regular edition would be fine. it also playes most of the original xbox games as well as the 360 games. if in doubt, head on over to the store and check out the back of the boxes. it will gives you specs on what each system does. happy hunting!

Go for the middle package, I believe it's labeled as "Go Pro" . Its $250, $50 more than than the basic package but it comes with a hard drive (needed to save game progress), a wireless controller, and 2 games.

As far as games go:

For sports I'm a fan of Madden '09, Forza 2 and NCAA basketball '09 will be out soon

For action go with Gears of War I or II, Halo 3, or Call of Duty 4

And I'm a big fan of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, if he's a Star Wars fan its a great addition to the movies.

Thanks Strider (and everyone!), it's the storage part I need to figure out. He'll want to play his Xbox games that we already have, he seems to only want a 360 at all because our Xbox won't play the newer games...all I ever see him play is this thing called Knights of the Old Republic, and that just has two wookies talking in a hallway for what seems like hours...I am SO not a gamer 😛

Why, is that better? I did ask him if we should get one of those or a Wii thingie, he says he wants a 360...

No Wii. Wii has been proving faulty.

XBOX has been struggling to keep up with PS3. Regardless of what folks say.

And can I just say; RRoD?? (Red Ring of Death.)

I have a PS3 and it's got amazing quality and useful updates. Along with a kazillion apps that are easily accessible.

Hmmm...I just looked up RRoD and that sounds pretty horrible...meanwhile we have a houseful of Xbox games plus the ones Santa's bringing our girls...this is becoming obnoxious :disgust:

Hardware wise, the PS3 is the better machine. Period. Its not even debatable if you check the specs on both machines...the fact that its a blu ray dvd player makes it a better buy hardware wise on its own. The gear heads here that havent read up on the machine may wanna take a look under the hood at it. With that said...

I own the 360 though. I bought it before the PS3 software had finally caught up with the hardware. I like my first party games like the Halos and Gears of Wars more than the 1st party games Sony is pushing. The 3rd Party games are a moot point since they will all be available for both systems anyway. I enjoy the online experience more than the one Sony presents (though it has gotten better). While PS3 online play is free, I just dont think it is up to par and I would rather pay money for the better online experience. And since you already have a bunch of xbox games anyway, and he wants to be able to play them, that would probably be the route to take. Even if the 360 isnt the better entertainment system (and its not a slouch by any stretch of the imagination), it allows him to play what he wants to play which is the whole point. Get him the Elite because frankly, at least in my mind, whenever you pay for storage you should break it down by price per gig of available space. Per gig the Elite is cheaper, and it comes in a sexy black (I wish mine had come in black).

Ah, get him an X-Box. He asked for it anyway. 🙂

Gear of War 2 is amazing. Like so amazing it deserves all caps. AMAZING.

Dead Space is cool too.

Sure doesn't hurt to ask but if he says he wants an xbox get the bearded man an xbox.... Hell, after last week he can have mine! 🙂 I bet regular edition will be more than fine as he sounds like a casual gamer. You've gotten great suggestions above on games. Gears of War 2 is amazing and if he is that much into his other Star Wars game, he'll probably love Force Unleashed. Or just say screw the console games and buy him and Adam REAL lightsabers and let them go to town in the basement. 😀

Just get him a 360 with a big harddrive (There are only 2 so it narrows down one's selection) and leave the rest to him.

And everyone might not like the Wii, but the truth is the Wii has sold more than the 360 and the PS3 combined.

I asked him more questions and he said something about Assassin's Creed, and that we don't need a PS3 'til we finally turn the basement into our Home Theater with the big huge wall-hanging HDTV of his dreams :triangle:

I shudder to think whether my wily little bearded Jedi or my Wookie would win that lightsaber battle 😱 :redheart:. They'd likely give up and watch Ninja Warrior 😎

The xbox and ps3 have near identical graphical capabilities (xbox has a more powerful graphics card, but ps3 has a more powerful computer). That said, it's entirely a matter of preference, and the xbox 360 online experience is vastly superior (and I say this as a ps3 owner, so don't go ranting at me, it's a fact).

If he was into KOTOR, might I suggest Mass Effect? It's made by the same studio, and it has the same kind of action RPG feel to it. Another big one that just came out is Fallout 3, which is a neat futuristic RPG-shooter game.

Beyond that, Gears of War is pretty amazing. If you want realistic shooters, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the best around, and there's always Halo 3 (kind of the flagship title for the system).

If you guys are into horror movies, Dead Space is really good. It's a sci fi horror game where you play an engineer sent to fix a space station, only to find everyone's dead and there are alien things sneaking around.

And finally, Left 4 Dead just came out. It's a zombie game, where you play as a team of people trying to get across an area to a helipad or whatever to escape, but there's zombies in the way 😛. It's really fun, as the game dynamically changes where zombies spawn based upon how well you're doing, how much ammo you have, etc, so it's never the same. Plus, you can play as zombies in other people's games 🙂

Yea, there's lots and lots of stuff out, it's quite a mature system now. Something I'd suggest: www.gamefly.com

I subscribed to this when I picked up my PS3, and it's been great. It's basically netflix for video games; you pay $20/month for two games out at a time, and when you send one back they ship the next game in your queue. There's tons of games out there which are awesome to play through once, but there's really no reason to go through again. Also, if you really like the game you can buy it for a used game price, and they'll ship you the box and manual along with the next game on your list. It works well for me: I've played through something like 8 games in the past two months, and paying $40 is a lot easier on my budget than $480

What do you play on PS3?

The PS3 has been dead since mgs. For Christ sake, the 360 is outselling it in Japan. JAPAN.

If he likes in depth role playing games get Fallout 3.

A word of warning, if he really gets in to it that'll be him done for weeks. No housework, no running errands, you will effectively be single until he finishes the thing.

Fable 2 is good but no substitute for the above.

There you go, my 2 pence. Going back to fallout now.....

Thanks for all the help guys! I just won an Xbox 360 Pro Premium, with 20 GBs of memory and whatever bells and whistles are supposed to come with it. Now I need to get him games, I'm thinking Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 or the Assassin's Creed game... :fish:
