We wrestling fans know wrestling is staged. The fact it is hyped, staged and exagerated is a secondary issue. It is a form of entertainment, akin to all other sports, whether you consider this one or not. Some people wouldn't consider golf, baseball, or basketball a sport, for instance. Its really about point of view. Period. And whose to say that all professional sports aren't staged or fixed? That players aren't paid under the table to take dives on purpose, and their coachs and managers aren't paid bribes by rival teams or those big league fat cats that somehow have a pull over everything? See? One could easily bring this up and debase professional sports on little more than an accusation (not that I am saying anything, its just an example). Just something to consider when you make it a point to disect another person's choice of entertainment.
People don't question professional sports, which is just another form of entertainment, yet they question wrestling. Its a double standard. And the excuse is that professional sports are important or somehow more sophisticated and worldy, and mean something to our history and future. They mean absolutely nothing outside of pride and overinflated egos which are all based on a group of people with the same mindset playing a GAME for money. When you take away the gambling, the beer, the parties, the cheerleaders, the coaches, and everything that revolves around major league sports, its just a game that people are being paid ridiculous ammounts of money to play. Sure, you might say the same of wrestling, but at least theres more to it than simply a game. In fact, was this not the reason it was made more than just a game? Think about it. McMahon and the others that formed this industry have good vision and insight, even if alot of people will choose not to go along with it. Like he gives a $hit about what anyone that doesn't like his business thinks.
Furthermore, our points of view aren't so distorted and we aren't so blind by our enjoyment of this wrestling entertainment that we can't see the inner workings of it.
We actually know more about how its 'fake' then a non-wrestling fan would. We have the knowledge of how it works, technically speaking. An outsider who may know nothing about it would base their claims on an opinion most likely rather than a fact. I feel threads like this are meant to make wrestling fans look like suckers. How are we suckers exactly? Because we choose to watch wrestling in our free time and follow along with it? So what? I know the answer- Because you think its real. Who said that? Thats assumption my friends, an assumption on your parts.
I could easily pick out things you like to watch/do and disect them to establish some sort of difference between you and me if I so wanted to. I don't though because theres no reason to. What do I gain from it, and what does it make me look like? We do have better things to do, don't we?
And to comment on the mention of wrestling being "homoerotic", grow up people. I think comments like that only serve to show one's own insecurity with their own sexuality. No need to be bothered or threatened by wrestling because of something like that. If you would not watch wrestling because you percieve it as 'gay' or something, you need to check yourself. Watching professional wrestling/sports entertainment isn't de-masculating in way. Professional or amateur. God only knows how much you'd miss out on because you feel uncomfortable with something for a reason like this. Note, I'm not picking on the user who mentioned homoeroticism, I'm commenting on the ideal in general as it relates to wrestling. I half expected it to come up in this thread or another sooner or later.
I have been a WWF/WWE fan since I was a kid, but I'm smart enough to know how it works. I don't need to be told about it because I already know. Its not as if I'm pretending its real or are just plain stupid or ignorant. So I feel theres no need for anyone to disprove it when its a given. As I mentioned in a similar thread, I'm glad wrestling is staged. Because if it weren't things wouldn't be the way they are and it wouldn't be the hit that it is.
I'm not gullible or easily amused. I just know what I like to watch in tv programming, when I do watch it, and wrestling is one of those things. No harm in it, and it doesn't define me. Now if I made it my life and made it a mission to commit myself to upholding some sort of lie THEN I would surely be an easily controlled and manipulated individual. THEN I'd deserve any ridicule coming my way. THEN there would be a need to take a step back and re-evaluate this and myself for watching it.
