You can't be THIS bored during your summer vacation...

To each their own, I suppose.

Just don't loop me in with him with your blanket statements. I don't know what's wrong with him, but I- and every other 'youth' that I know- would never do something like this.

I've seen people twice his age do stupider things. If he wants to die early, then he can play with guns all he wants. At best, he learns what the world is like and at worst he learns what a bullet through the temple feels like.

Eh..... let's not shit on this parade. It's badass and dangerous, a winning combination. If he bites the big one, he deserves it; he probably won't, and will come back with a better story than most people I know

I agree. ^

He's probably learning alot more about the real world than he is sitting at home. Back home, his friends are all probably working, partying, and sitting around on Facebook.

I don't know about you guys, but my idea of spending a summer vacation will not involve going into a war zone UNARMED and not being a prepared fighter. This guy is treating as though he is touring Hawaii. What on Earth would possess someone to do something insane? Then again, I see it all the time... Which is probably why I do not feel bad when these morons get hurt..

The part that concerns me is that his parents did not know he was going (they do now...). Are you that inconsiderate and insane that you wouldn't tell your family? How would you feel as a parent when some government official knocks on your door and tells you that your child died while "touring" the Libyan rebellion unarmed and not even participating in the fighting and you didn't know about it? He died because he went into the warzone willingly just to see what happens. You would be heartbroken of course, but you will forever be haunted by knowing your kid made the dumbest decision ever made...

Dude should have showed up armed and taken a shot at the $2 million bounty on Gaddafi...

I completely disagree that he is learning anything or getting any "real world" experience. He was idiotic to go into a dangerous, rebellious zone in Libya, not speaking their language, and treating it like it's a regular summer holiday. "Real world" experience would be if he was traveling and actually aiding in something worthwhile, like bringing supplies to starving children in Africa. Instead he is acting like an idiot and doing nothing but joining in on a revolution in Libya he knows nothing about. It is young men like this that make me ASHAMED of my generation. If he thinks this makes him look "cool" or "badass"...it doesn't. It makes him look like a total tool. And I feel bad for his parents, did he ever think of them before jetsetting into Egypt and then crossing dangerous borders...apparently not. Again, a complete T.O.O.L.

Yeah I held of commenting on this because I really don't know what to say.

The article makes it seem like he's just some dumb frat kid goofing off. If that's true, then I don't approve of his making light of the situation. If, though, he joined the rebels because he legitimately believes in their cause and wanted to participate, then I think that's pretty heroic.

That kid is a total dumbass, he knows the risk of going in there. If he gets shot then its his stupid fault.

You have to read between the lines to discern the truth. The article is going to play it off in a semi-serious light for the comical effect of it: a dumb fratboy two sheets to the wind arbitrarily deciding to boogie off to Libya, completely unarmed and untrained, is much funnier than the probable actuality of the situation.

Of course he's unarmed; a private citizen traveling internationally while armed is virtually impossible, and I can't imagine he has the resources (or the necessity) to arm himself upon arrival.

It is a sick vacation, to be honest, and most likely said sarcastically.

If you tell your parents you'll be touring Libya in the summer, causing them to worry and fret, and then the knock at the door comes, is it somehow worse than if the knock comes unawares? He's an adult and he didn't see the need to worry his parents.

He's on the ground, talking to real people a half a world away during a historical revolution that will be recorded and taught to children in the future... riding, eating, living and talking with these people is an experience no one can take away from this young man, even if you decide to only focus on the fact that his decision was foolhardy and dangerous.

Of course it's stupid and dangerous. Big fuckin deal, says I. He's 21, with no family of his own to support. He's free to do with his life as he sees fit, and if is vision involves living with Libyan rebels in the desert during a revolution, so be it. I say more power to him.

If this were him going to Libya to plant trees, then yes, I would be far more supportive of his decision.

He has no military training that I can see. He's going to get his dumb ass killed. He's not going to be living with anyone out there. But yes, it's his choice. Now, if only we could apply this same logic to death-row inmates who want to claim their own lives, and save the state the trouble.

I don't understand why everyone seems to be angry at this guy for his dumb decision. People waste their lives doing drugs or even nothing at all. If this guy gets killed it's his own fault and I'm sure he's not only aware of this but has made peace with it.

Well, I suppose I'm just angry on behalf of this people who'll cry their eyes out during his funeral.

This kid is a moron. Plain and simple. Sure, it is his decision, but the reason why I call him a fool is because I will never agree with extra stupid decisions people make. Like Bothersome said, if he had gone to Libya to plant trees or even do humanitarian aid, then I wouldn't have a problem. But he is going to be amongst the actual fighting. That's his goal. To be in the warzone as though he is taking part in a movie or something.

If he was going to fight on behalf of the rebels, I would still question his decision, but would understand. He's there actually fighting for a cause. But he's going to just freakin observe? That is just insane. He didn't tell his parents because they probably would have slapped the hell out of him. No one wants to see it happen, but if he gets injured or worse yet, killed, I shed no tear. I would shed a tear for his family and firends because he caused them pain by being a total selfish moron.

I don't get the anger either.

It's his decision, and ultimately it doesn't affect you. All you're doing is going off about what a stupid guy this kid is and name calling. And while that may be true, why does it bother you that much? That's what I don't get.

People join the army and go off to fight in wars and die. Do you call them moronic and selfish? No. They're fighting for a cause. This guy just picked his own.

I call people who go off and die for a slab of dirt on a larger chunk of dirt moronic, yes. Mainly because it need not happen. Or rather, I call the men who command them to go off and die moronic. Some people just don't have a choice.

However, there's a tremendous difference between that kid and a Marine. The kid has no military training that I can see. There's a difference between going out to fight in a war, and going out to die in a war.

I'm not really angry at the kid. I'm just a little miffed that he's so eager to throw his life away.

Also they better not get mad at the U.S. for this kid's decision as well.

Perhaps he is not mature enough to realize that a war zone is not an amusement park and the world doesn't exist for his entertainment.

I applaud this young man for taking an initiative, however reckless, as opposed to pissing his life away on Jersey Shore and fist pumping like the rest of you. It is better to live one day as a lion, than a hundred years as a sheep.

He can also do humaniatarian aid. He went to observe their fighting. If you were a parent, would you be thrilled with his decision?

Humanitarian aid is a farce, farthest thing from reality that one can get. And personally, I would be thrilled.

Reckless, unnecessary and dangerous are all reasons why the trip is exciting and fulfilling, I think, and you're all missing the forest for the trees. He's not there to plant trees or feed people, he wants to see. Is this not enough?

I do not attempt to disparage service members or veterans who've seen actual combat by defending this guy... I just think what he did is pretty cool. I think that's where the difference of opinion begins and ends.

Let it be known that we did not get to where we are on the evolutionary food chain by acting like lions.

Being a sheep has worked- quite successfully I might add- for the last several thousand years. I don't see why we need to start acting suicidal now.
