Here in the States, the decorations for Christmas go up almost as soon as Halloween ends... "Tis the Season to make a buck", is the mantra of the department stores. So by Thanksgiving, a lot of people are primed and ready for Christmas to arrive. November 26th, today, is actually the busiest shopping day of the year here in the States. Get gifts at Ho-Ho-Ho Sale prices or at drastically reduced prices.

Now, to answer BlackmoonDoll's question...

I can't remember my favorite Christmas memory... I was busy being born that day.

Favorite Xmas memory? Too many. I have a video tape full of my favorite memories...all xmas's spent with my Grandpa before he passed away just after Thanksgiving in 2000. One that stands out in my mind though is a scene where Grandpa is opening a present from his son (my uncle David). Inside the box is a shirt....3 sizes too big. Grandpa holds up the sail sized garment and goes "Holy Christ, who is this supposed to fit?" Meanwhile, my Grandmother is alternating between screeching at my uncle for buying a shirt so big, and hollaring at Grandpa to turn it around so she can see what the front looks like. Grandpa replies by pulling the shirt down just enough to peer over it, give my Grandmother an exasperated look, and screech back at her: "THE FRONTS JUST AS BIG AS THE BACK!"

Even Lazarus, who unfortunately was denied the opportunity to ever meet the old fart, laughs his ass off everytime we're watching the video and this scene comes on. It's a great, fun memory of the good times we had when he was still with us.

Red, I AM waiting for it... waiting for it to be over with!!! This country is obsessed with toys, gadgets, the latest gizmos... Christmas is nothing more than a celebration of greed... people go broke because they max out their credit cards... lonely people commit suicide because they have no one to share this most festive of holidays with... Without getting into religious debate, this day has nothing to do with celebrating Christ's birth... that deserves a thread all to itself.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the Holiday. Family gatherings, good food, Christmas lights, Christmas trees... and the overwhelming guilt that comes with forgetting to buy that gift for someone who just gave you one. This year, I don't even want a gift... the love of family and friends are the best gift I could ever receive.

Before you think I'm a Scrooge... I was born on Christmas Day so I know about that which I speak.

Getting to help my Grandpa (before he passed away in August) set up his electric train that went around the x-mas tree every year, then turning it on...on x-mas eve with all the family there, this year i will have to do it alone and keep the tradition alive for him

Ahhh featherfingers... don't look at the greedy types, catch the wonder in children's eyes the first time they see Santa in the mall... walk through the Christmas section of a department store late at night... you can almost feel the magic. I'm a christmas sap... it is magic, spellbinding and beautiful. I adore the challenge of finding the "perfect" gift. The one thing that will make that someone special light up and be amazed at the fact that they found what you never expected and maybe never even knew you wanted.

Maybe not considered a christmas memory... but christmastime for sure... and a fantastic memory at that. Still makes me smile...watching the Rose Bowl with my dad from the time I was a little girl. Him teaching me the words to the Michigan fight song and me wearing MIchigan Wolverines t shirts of his that went down to my ankles while running through the halls singing the song at the top of my lungs everytime they scored.

Hmm, well not too many good memories (See Birthday thread) 😀 but once when I was a teen, for some bizarre reason, the folks took us up to the slopes on Christmas Day. They didn't know how to ski but I was in ski club (we lived in Mass back then.) We got to spend all day, practically had the resort to ourselves, it was the best childhood memory I have about Christmas.

These days, my fave thing about Christmas is the lights (I'm such a little kid, I know!) and shopping, getting to spend money on my friends!

My favorite Christmas memory/tradition was when my entire family (on my mother's side) met up at my aunt's house to eat ourselves silly and open tons of gifts.

The house would be absolutely crammed with people. My cousins and I would run around playing with everything and just being goofy in general. Laughter filled the house.

I didn't mention that my Aunt is a secret ticklephile. A lot of tickling went on during the holidays. 😛 I think it's her fault that I turned out this way. heehee 😉

Sorry I was so down on Christmas a few posts ago... I really do love that time of year... my favorite memory... just the family gatherings when my grandparents were still alive. There was always so much love between us all. It'd be nice if that special Christmas Spirit lasted all year long.
