Mine is Robert Fripp

He's fronted his own successful Rock Band. He's worked with many other artists such as Peter Gabriel,David Bowie,Darryl Hall, and David Sylvian. And he has perfected his own ambient music sound with "Soundscapes".
And yet, either by the industry's influence or his,he is largely unknown except for the true diehard fan.

Two R'n'B singers from the late 60s, Arthur Alexander and Howard Tate. Arthur passed away a couple years back but recorded a final record called "Lonely Like Me" that was awesome. Howard recorded a comeback cd last year that was just as fantastic as his earlier material.

In my opinion, Terry Callier is one of the most underrated musicians around. I'm more familiar with his two late-90s albums TimePeace and Lifetime, though he comes from an era where the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack and others were huge. His later stuff is brilliant: Folk, soul, jazz, gospel and bits of other genrés thrown in for good measure. One day I'll get the rest of his back catalog too.

I have a few of those:

Matreca Berg(probably one of the best songwriters in the business)

Beth Neilson Chapman(another great songwriter and an outstanding vocalist)

Bobbie Cryner(sultry voice, beautiful lady)

Mila Mason(unfortunately, the "Big Five" in country, Shania, Reba, Faith, Jo Dee and Sara Evans overrode her attempts at success.

Suzy Bogguss- probably one of the purest vocalists out there, her career has took a downturn.

Michelle Wright(another sultry singer from Canada that you just don't hear from much anymore.

Allison Moorer- Shelby Lynne is her sister. Allison sang "A Soft Place to Fall" in the movie "The Horse Whisperer"

I'll think of more

Nick Lowe.Although,he's not exactly underrated because people who know rock music love him.But he's not a household name by any stretch of the imagination.

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, GREAT call Strider~I LOVED this guy! Whatever happenened to?

Seems to be a word missing........

.....from this thread. Most of the people mentioned are not musicians but rather "bedroom" musicians, the ones who spend more time in front of the wardrobe mirror with the guitar unplugged.

My offering is a bloke called Victor Feldman. A Brit who moved to the states in the early sixties and had the sheer audacity to turn down a place in Miles Davises band, because he could earn more money working in Los Angeles recording studios. You may think you dont know who he is but, many of you probably have at least one album in your collection with him on it.

Just the man you need when you realise too late that masscara and hair spray dont record very well.

A lot of my favorite bands are rockabilly and psychobilly,so it's kinda odd saying they're underrated when basically all fans of the music know who they are,but I also have to mention The Cramps, who are possibly the greatest psychobilly band ever.

Most people who listen to the old Motown records have no idea that the bass player is a man named James Jamerson. Most musicians know and respect that name. Check out the bass playing on those hits and tell me you don't agree it's outstanding!

Totally agree. If you look at his catalog,it's like basically a Motown's greatest hits album.Basically any iconic song out of there had him playing on it.

Drew........

.....Feldman played with Miles on the "Seven Steps to Heaven" album at a time when Miles was living both in LA and NY. Feldman was working in studios in LA and teamed up with Miles for some of the tracks and Miles asked Feldman to go on tour with him, but Feldman turned him down!! said he was earning too much in the studios to take a pay cut on the road with Miles Davis........not the smartest career move I have ever heard of! but these guys do exist, just happy to turn up nine to five in a studio having to play and record all kinds of crap for big bucks and then play for laughs with the odd jazz legend that turns up in town from time to time!
