Some here refer to me by the pseudonym I adopted for the purposes of publishing stories online (Christopher, after a friend who died all too young), which is okay. Others call me the name on my birth certificate, George, which is okay, too.

My cat calls me Knox.

I guess I've always had a preference for Dave because it was less formal and I am not a formal person by any means. There is always that sense of lecturing connatation with David, which I never dug. When you call me Dave, it just sounds to me like you are talking to me at the same level, which I personally perfer.. To each their own.
