Ace Of The Bass (Best Bass Players)

To me, the best bass player ever was James Jamerson. Who, you might ask, was he? Listen to any Motown recording by The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, etc. and you will hear James Jamerson. A great example of outstanding bass playing is heard on the song "I Was Made To Love Her", by Stevie Wonder. An obscure song by The Jackson Five called "Darling Dear" will prove Jamerson's talents as well. Oh, and the bass player on Jackie Wilson's "You're Love (Keeps Lifting Me Higher)"? Yes, who else? There's my vote.

Larry Graham - inventor of the "slap and pop" - brought out the unique sound of Sly and the Family Stone.

Jaco Pastorius - "Weather Report" - funkiest Jazz Fusion bassist with some of the fastest fingers alive.

Bootsy Collins - The man whom "Funk" was named after, set the spine in line for James Brown, Funkadelics, Parliament, and Bootsy's Rubber Band.

Those are my votes.

Shad & Steph, you two know your bass players! Now, I'm going to state the obvious by giving Paul McCartney my seal of approval. If anyone doubts me, give a listen to his bass lines on The Beatles' "Paperback Writer". Talk about busy, but in a melodic way.

I'm with you on that vote!

No argument there hon--I'm a HUGE fan!

XOXO

Who would argue about that? Paul still can outperform guys half his age. But what I want to know is if anyone knows anything about Carol Kaye, a female bassist who was a studio musician who played on a lot of hits from the 1960's?

I play a 1972 Fender Precision Left-Handed Bass. I saw all of the entries for guitarists, drummers and keyboardists so I felt I should make a contribution.

Then you saw history, Steph, because John Entwistle was still alive and kicking back then. It's sad to think of all of the musicians who've gone off to Rock and Roll Heaven... Phil Lynott, bass player and leader of Thin Lizzy ("The Boys Are Back In Town"), for example.

Who was that bass player for Ten Years After?
I saw him on Woodstock and boy!! was he playing that bass!!😱

Then of course there's Chris Squire of Yes,who plays his bass like a guitar!
Also.If i remember,Geezy Butler of Black Sabbath is good also!

Leo Lyons was the bass player for Ten Years After. He's not bad, does an ok job on "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and "I'm Goin' Home".

Nobody mentioned Jack Bruce? (from Cream)

Drew

Drew, thanks for reminding me! His playing on "Strange Brew" is on my Top Ten of songs with amazing bass playing. 'Amazing Bass, how sweet the sound...'

Geddy Lee
Jaco Pastorius
Stu Hamm
Stanley Clarke
Billy Sheehan

...and a host of others whose names I don't know. Old jazz, club stuff from back in the day. I know what I like but never really kept up with the names of the session musicians who played with some of my favorites.

N.H.O.P.............

...Niels Henning Orsted Pederson.....this lad rules the planet as far as bass playing is concerned, he can do stuff on "steam" that none of the other players mentioned can do on a "plank".

I see Dave knows his stuff, some tops lads on his list.

Some other top geezers :- Georg Mraz,Dave Green,Ray Brown,Eddie Gomez,Dave Holland,Marc Johnson,Jimmy Haslip,Danny Wilson,Alex Malheiros.

Cannibal Corpse's bass player

I was really amazed when I saw that guy playing the bass live

By the way, did anyone mention Stanley Clarke? I may have missed that one. 😎

I'm surprised to find so many different artists in the running. IMO the best is:

RUSH's GEDDY LEE

although the basist in NO DOUBT is pretty good too!

Once again, I leave one of my influences off of my original list...I am such a bonehead these days. How could I forget Chris Squire of Yes? I remember being truly happy with my playing ability the day I nailed "Roundabout" and Rush's "YYZ".

I remember a show Yes did in Binghamton, NY...they did a number where John anderson sang and Squire played bass, and that was it. He was doing all these funky chordal things that sounded awesome.
