Are Ghosts Real?

Here I go again...

I just keep getting into my theory in this forum. Gotta love this place.😀 Here's my opinion.

IF ghosts exist, they are a form of energy which is responsible for one's consciousness and personality during life. Because energy cannot be broken down in the same way matter can, it may remain after death. Also, I conjecture that the emotional condition of a person when they die will determine the condition of their "soul" in the afterlife, assuming that there is one.

The only thing I have to offer as evidence is something I heard from my step-father. Somebody let me know if they've heard of it. Curlean photography - It's apparently some way to view the aura surrounding the body. From what I was told, if performed on someone who has had a limb amputated, that limb will still exist in their aura, suggesting that it is not simply radiated by the body, but is a seperate entity.

I do not know myself. My father once had a an old clock which ran in the garage and it worked fine and we had no problems. He sold it to a friend who really liked it and bought it for his wife. Well about a week later this guy called very upset saying the clock was haunted. Apparently every night at midnight the clock would strike thirteen times instead of twelve then a ghost came out of the clock and chased and scared his wife. My father said we had no problems with it. Well the man called a Ghost exterminator and he did some stuff and then the clock was fine.

On my grandfather's land in southern New York, there is a house that is over 200 years old. They used to stay there during the summers before moving there full-time and building another house, leaving the old one standing.

Almost everyone in my family has seen what we call 'the ghost' at one point or another. When we were kids and stayed there, you'd always hear footsteps up and down the stairs when everyone was asleep, or see a shadowy figure in the upstairs attic/loft.

Once, back in the days before my birth, my grandfather was alone, waiting for his friend to come up for a hunting weekend. It was late, and granddad went to bed upstairs. In the middle of the night, he feels a tap on his shoulder. He says he wasn't sure what it was, and he was half-asleep, so he paid it no attention. Soon after, he felt it again. Assuming it was his friend, he got up and went downstairs. His friend didn't show up for another hour.

After relocating to the new house, the old one was kept for storage and such. Every so often, at night, someone would see the faint outline of a figure standing in the attic window, overlooking the end of the dirt-road driveway.

This last winter, the old house finally started to give. The old stone foundation cracked, and part of it collapsed. As they were removing the debris, the job led my uncle and his crew to the small basement. A good chunk of the wall fell away, revealing the remains of a human skeleton.

I'm not making any guesses as to what it all means, nor am I taking a stand on "ghosts", per se...but these are the facts, and that's what we saw.

Interesting topic 😱

I have a ghost that lives in my apartment. I've never seen him/her (the result of my polite request that he/she please never materialize).

I know it's there because things sometimes fly off shelves and onto the floor, and he/she likes to mess with one of my cats' minds (not a hard thing to do.. she's a really dumb cat).

There's a ghost that lives in the (vacant) upstairs apartment as well - It may be the same one, but I don't know..

I hear it walking around at night, and my landlady saw it standing in the window late one evening. She said it looked like Ted Kennedy.

Phoebe,

If you lived in Mass. instead of L.A. I'd say there is a passable chance that it is Ted Kennedy...🙄

Phoebe

There are people that can exorcize the ghost for you if you want. I would be careful though probably many are not reputable. However I guess since you both have a deal it would be best to leave things alone as long as you are OK with it.

Who ya' gonna call?

I do believe ghosts exist. What they are is another matter that I'm not quite sure of in my own mind yet to say with theory...

Are they energy fingerprints left behind?

The spirts of the departed who have not finished everything on Earth?

A tear in the fabric of space and time?

Bruce Willis?

One of the most interesting theories in paranormal research is the spectral half-life. Let us suppose that ghosts do exist. Now everyone doesn't become a ghost, they are fairly infrequent. So let us say a high number, one in ten million people become a ghost. If that were true we would be seeing ghostly Neanderthals and American Indians from 10,000 years ago walking around our cities, but we don't. That is where the half-life comes in.

It is estimated that a half-life of a ghost is 300 years. So the odds of seeing the ghost of a gladiator in Rome is pretty rare. That means in 100 to 200 years there won't be any tortured prisoners, or wronged people to amuse and befuddle tourists. You'll have other ghosts but the ghost of a mugging victim isn't as impressive as the maid killed by the estranged wife of her lover.

On a plus side there will be a lot less haunted places TV shows unless they want to focus on the punk kid who died while playing on his X-Box all day long.

I myself experienced a ghost when I was in San Diego. I went to the Whaley Museum (the first court house). There are said to be four spirits in the house. Mr. and Mrs. Whaley, their child and a prisoner. I knew that it was haunted but I was unaware of how things manafested. I was there with my Scout Master and one other kid. The kid and I went up the stairs to look at the bedrooms. On our way up we were overcome on the stairs by this vile overwhelming perfume. It was as if a lady just splashed half a bottle all over herself. We checked upstairs but didn't see anyone. We didn't smell anything on our way back downstairs or at any other time. According to the ranger who told about the ghosts mentioned that some people smell the perfume of Mrs. Whaley on the staircase. We heard about this after our experience.

My five cousins with my Aunt and Uncle moved into a house in Richmond which was supposedly haunted by two ghosts. They experienced manifestations for about 2 or 3 weeks and then it stopped. My mother theorizes that two ghosts were no match for her sister's family.

And Phoebe there are gentle ways to encourage a ghost to move on. One of them involves burning sage (though that can drive you out as well). If the poltergeist activity isn't a problem then I'd just live with it, or try to get it to pay some of the rent.

Another way to get rid of a ghost is to set up a DVD player and tv to play "Bio Dome" be sure to exit the apartment before the opening credits finish. When you come back that ghost will be history!

Gotta go along with Mav on this one. Someday I may be brave enough to elaborate with my own theory...suffice it to say that perhaps this energy seeks out like energy and "congregates" at one source....."heaven" perhaps.... or pehaps Lucas wasnt really that far off with the force... I'll leave it for another thread at another time...I will say this in answer to Ice's question..Yes..I have been in the presence of my father several times since his death..actually saw nothing, but felt him there and felt his touch on my shoulder as if he had never left..it was a wonderous experience......

Gotta agree with Mav on this one, but with the addition that I've NO doubt that ghosts, spirits, whatever name you call 'em....exist.

Here's an intersting little article that I saw on the press a while back.🙂

----------------------
LONDON (Reuters) - Mobile phones are killing off ghosts, an expert who has spent years researching the occult has said.

Tony Cornell, of the Society for Psychical Research, told the Sunday Express newspaper that reports of ghost sightings had started to decline when mobile phones were introduced 15 years ago.

"Ghost sightings have remained consistent for centuries. Until three years ago we'd receive reports of two new ghosts every week," said Cornell, of Cambridge in Eastern England.

"But with the introduction of mobile phones 15 years ago, ghost sightings began to decline to the point where now we are receiving none."

According to the paper, haunted tourist attractions in Britain could be under threat if the number of cellphones continues to grow from the present figure of 39 million

Apparently paranormal events, which some scientists put down to unusual electrical activity, could be drowned out by the electronic noise produced by phone calls and text messages.

---

My thoughts:

Now that half the world has a phone glued to its ear, people are less likely to have attention available to notice the subtleties of the paranormal.

I speculate that the reason we don't have the same faerie, ghost, and god/goddess stories of ancient times, is not because they aren't around. It's because people quit noticing them, and choose other "logical" or "natural" explanations for the frankly paranormal.

But of course this is one of my more steady rants, I suppose! *grin*

On the other hand... What if, as popularized (maybe) in the TV mini-series, "Merlin," beings of the Otherworld (including ghosts) need energy/attention from us in the form of recognition, if not actual worship? What if, without the attention, ghosts don't have the energy to manifest so obviously, so they're "dying"? (Okay, that'd be redundant... they're already dead *grin*)

Or, what if the majority of residual energy hauntings are not a fine example of perpetual motion, but actually refuel from the energy/attention of those who observe the phenomena... and, without so many people noticing now that cellphones make it possible to walk, chew gum, AND talk at the same time...

Well, you get the idea.

I'd consider that yes, maybe we're seeing fewer residual energy hauntings. Maybe.

But I'd be reluctant to say that the actual ghosts are vanishing or whatever.

And I'd have some reeeeeal questions about cellphones being able to banish them, anyway. Besides, we've seen cellphones simply not work in haunted settings. So, it seems to me that the ghosts can affect the cellphones as much--or more than--vice versa.

Then again, as I've said before, I know jusssst enough about electrical stuff to be inept! *grin*

I mean, we know that digital cameras tend to pick up more "orbs" than regular cameras, which suggests a paranormal/electrical connection, so to speak. So maybe there is something to the idea of cellphones affecting the paranormal/Otherworld?

I don't know, but it's fun to speculate anyway.

So Jobelle, I guess that means it's possible by simply calling the Ghostbusters, you'd do the job yourself. Now I know how to kill a ghost and order a pizza at the same time, I'm well on my way to ruling the world.

tickling ghosts...

Since this IS the tickling forum, do ghosts ever tickle poeple? (Boy, that would be a cool video to make!) But, in the real world, ghosts supposedly turn TV's on, throw books, shove people out of bed.

Imagine being tickled by a ghost while you slept. Or, instead of seeing a ghost walking about, seeing a ghost being tickled. That would be a haunted house to live in every night.

Indeed...

...But you will laugh, something like that actually happened! I used to have a book about mystics and stuff like that. There was a story in it about two clever guys who made a little strange bet: The one of them who died first, has to tickle the foot of the other guys wife! And one night, one of these guyswoke up by a sound coming from his wife. She was giggling in her sleep. He didnt think anything with that, but when they had breakfast he asked" Why did you giggle last night?". And the wife said "I don't know, I think someone was tickling my foot". The husband was terrified and ran to the phone to call his pal. And actually, he died the day before because of a haert attack. This story is really true, and my english is pretty bad, sorry. Most of it I have from Shemue 😉 Thanks, Mr. Suzuki!

I'm well aware that there are a lot of things in our world which can't be explained satisfactorily by whatever science. If you have ever stayed at a Scottish castle, the atmosphere is certainly evoking some spooky events.

I remember being a guest of the Marquis of Linlithgow at Linlithgow House (near Edinburgh), dining with him in the official banqueting room (normally roped off when tourists were around), and he showed me his ancestor gallery on the walls of the double-wing stairway up to the first floor. Suddenly he interrupted his explanations, and we both listened intently. The stairs creaked, the sound coming from below, then passing us and proceeding upway; nobody was seen.

The Marquis just shrugged and remarked: "We experience this rather often. Personally I think that there's another stairway behind the wall, in the servant quarters, but we don't know for sure." I had goosebumps all over!

My grandmother had a flower pot which always fell off its shelf and broke when a relative died. During my school holidays, I experienced this myself. In the middle of the night, that pot fell down. Next morning we received a telegram, informing us about the death of an uncle, at exactly the same hour when the pot broke.

Yup, only explaination for things happening at my place.
Now the guy next door had died in his condo (overdose) months before I moved in. Could it be him? Don't know.

It/ghost closed my bedroom door twice when I was lying in bed. The first time I thought I did it though I ALWAYS, ALWAYS sleep with the door wide open. The door has to be dragged cuz of the carpet in order to close it so no... the wind didn't do it! 😉

So it bugged me for two days as I never close the door. So on the 2nd day I decide to place my small gargage basket and wedge it between the wall and the door. I go to sleep thinking I'm so lame, I must have sub-consciously closed my door before going to bed... the next morning the door closed again! Well it tried to except the basket stopped if from closing all the way. I was unnerved.
That night I tried to talk to it in my room, asking it if it could talk or show it self. It never did. It never messed with my door again.

When I first month moved in my front door was wide opened when I got home from work, I know I locked and closed it. I remember doign it that particular morning and checking the door! Police came by that night and blamed it on the wind. No way I thought back then but didn't think much else on it.

Somethings about, I got a million other things that have happened to me but just wanted to mention this one for the sake of not hogging up readers time. 🙂

I don't have any pets either otherwise I would have blamed this all on them. 😀 😀

Here is another true spooky story, although not really a ghost sory. A friend of our family received an heirloom from another family member that past away. It was a very, very old book with strange writings in it. On several occasions when he openned the book the room got very cold and he swore he could demonic laughter in the background. Naturally he got very scared so he through the book in the fire place which had a raging fire going. He watched for a few seconds then left the room, when he come back the book was several feet away from the fire place and didn't have a burn mark on it! He quickly grabbed the book, drove to the desert and buried the book in the middle of nowhere. Luckily the book did not return.

This is even scarier now I'm a TMF expert. Oooooooooooh.

I currently occupy the second floor of a 19th Century farmhouse-style home (I live in a college town where many of the older homes have unfortunately been converted into apartments) and my roommates and I have caught glimpses of a shadowy figure carrying what appears to be a baby. Previous occupants have backed up our story. Fortunately, whatever shares our apartment with us appears not to be malevolent in any way, as bizarre occurrances have been limited to appliances being unplugged while in use and the appearance of the shadowy figures themselves. We do not feel the least bit threatened and actually think it's kinda cool.😀

sushi854, "I see dead people... " lol couldn't resist. 🙂

I wasn't going to share this, but I just can't resist! Y'all, don't kill me! 😛

Southern Gathering 2000, Memphis, TN
3rd week of December
Attendees, you know who you were!

There was a ghost in that house that DID NOT LIKE Strange men! There were a few things that couldn't be explained wihtout bringing in the "other" side. There was the music coming on VERY LOUDLY in the night. Doors unocking and opening themselves whilst folks lay half asleep on the living room floor! Waking to the below freezing temps that curled in fromt he porch!

That's what you get for having a tickle party in one of the historic homes in Memphis! It made for an INTERSTING addition to the laughter!

Shiver....feathers weren't the only things causing goosebumps that weekend!!

Boooo!!! Hmmm....ghosts? Nope...I don't believe in them and have never seen one, nor do I hardly know anyone who has. And for those that say they feel the presense of a past relative or something to that sort, I believe you!!! It's called the human memory, and that "warm" weird feeling around you is your mind remembering all the cool things about that person and feeling the energy of the "spirit" they left behind in your mind and heart!

My girlfriend also claims that a ghost lives in her apartment and that he is friendly...well if he is so friendly, why won't he say hello to me when I am there??? teehee... Weird things sometimes do happen in her apt., but I can usually always explain it or figure out why whatever happened took place!

daddy
(watch...as soon as I post this I will be visited by the entire ghost population tonight!!!)

I do believe in spirits, or ghosts as some people call them. When a person dies all the energy that makes up "THEM" has to go somewhere. And I've had experiences myself with spirits from the beyond in several different ways.

In our family the joke is that when you die you do not get to rest in peace... You're assigned a job. Grandpa does parking. He works very hard around the holidays for us and always comes through. I've even told friends about it who ask Grandpa Burke for help and he helps them. Grandma Burke does weather.

I asked my Dad before he passed on what job he wanted. He couldn't figure it out but he did show me after he died. I had to go on a business trip shortly after he passed away. Since I had been at his house that prior week I didn't get my plane tickets. The airlines reissued them and upgraded me, without charge, to first class to fly to the East Coast and onto Brussels. I also got upgraded in Brussels to a 5 star hotel with a sunken tub and warm slippers delivered to my room within 5 minutes of getting back from my meetings.

My step-mom had an equally interesting travel event during a trip with my sister shortly after Dad died. They went to Sedona, Arizona for some spiritual peacefulness. One day while walking through a small shopping mall they turned the corner to find a candy store called..."How Sweet It is!". That was my dad's favorite saying throughout his life! So he let mom know he was with her. He also did some stuff with her motel room and flights that was pretty cool.

Grandpa, Grandma and Dad have let their presence be known in some incredible ways. Those are the spirits that I believe in.

cellular phones

That is interesting, but you'd have to have a scientific count of ghosts past and present. Also do experiments where you have a cellular phone signal going on in the area of paranormal activity and have it measured over time.

Ayla ny, you don't believe me! *sob*:cry1:

And Bagelfather, I agree that there should be a way to get whatever lives with us to kick in on rent.
