Question for discussion: What is your personal opinion of online typographical errors in publicly posted comments here in the various TMF forums, and in other online internet sites as well ?

Do you ignore them (as we all make them) or do they put thoughts into your mind about the person who wrote them ?

What about the internet in general ?

I generally ignore spelling and punctuation unless the perpetrator of such misgrammar is making lofty statements with regard to his/her own intelligence or deriding somebody else's lack thereof.

Same here. The Computer/Online is not like real life. I mean the computer and everybody on the computer is in real time. But other then that that's it it's still not like real life (meaning away from the computer). so i could care less about spelling everyword right and getting all my punchtuations down. If i mess up then i mess up and i move on

I personally am often distracted, at least, by the sloppy manner in which many people express themselves online. And, frankly, I get a bit sick of hearing the phrase...It's only the internet. When you're with a handful of friends who all express themselves that way, it's one thing. But, the internet is still a public venue for expressing your thoughts. If you want to be understood, you should speak clearly.

The type of stuff we've all seen out there is the internet equivilant of mumbling in a live vocal conversation. If someone doesn't care enough about what they're saying to make things clear, I don't tend to care enough about it to read it. That's especially true (as Drew and VC have stated) when the people using sloppy expressions claim to be superintelligent life forms. It's also heightened when those folks write something of greater length...whether it be a story or a post discussing something. Having at least one word per sentence misspelled, little or no punctuation, poor grammar and no paraghraph breaks makes it very difficult to read.

Having said all that, I also don't dislike those who do that or think ill of them. It's their choice to express themselves the way they want. I'm not going to tell them they have to do otherwise. But, if that kind of stuff is addressed to me, I tend to let them know that they shouldn't expect me to read or respond to it that way. That part is MY choice. I'm dyslexic to begin with. I don't need further things to screw with my brain when I'm trying to read something.

An occasional typo is one thing, but when an email or online post runs rampant with them, then I think very little of what the author is trying to convey.

Email comes equipped with spell check and the submit button doesnt have to be pushed until the post is proofread.....laziness is a trait which tells a lot about the person posting or sending an email...

Like Drew70 I find it particularly humerous when the poster is trying to make themself look more intelligent than those reading the message.......😉

Call me psychic, but I'd swear... 😀 😉

Personally it gets on my tits; but then, a lot of things do. lol My pet hate is grown adults who can't spell. Okay, we all hit the wrong key occasionally or arse up a rarely used word, but there/their/they're is arsed up so frequently on here it makes me scream. If I wasn't already going bald I'd be pulling my hair out too. 😀

Another pet hate is when people run the words "bare" and "feet" into one. There is no such word, phrase or expression as "barefeet", okey-smegging-day? You can have "bare feet" or "barefoot", but not ever "barefeet". There is no such arseing thing! I've even seen professional video producers doing this and it drives me nucking futs.

Ahem. Okay, time for the Valium. 😀 😉

I think we all make the occasional typo, I don't pay much attention to it, unless it's someone who ALWAYS does it, then I'd wonder about their intelligence...

XOXO

Is that so, MOBNGER??

Mimi 😛

Well, maybe it is the tech writer in me speaking out but I think that when someone is being serious they need to pay attention to spelling and punctuation. It gives them more credibility. A good example is in a college essay... spelling counts. Like Steph said though, we all do hit the occasional wrong key. But if someone does it consistantly... it looks sloppy. It takes away from the message.

I no wut ur talkin about. And I hate reeding typing like this . (and how the hell do they get "owned" from this: "3Pwned"..or is it "p3wned"? A "p" and a 3 makes an "o"?...uhhh..okay... 😕 )

If a friend approached me and began speaking in weird acronyms and without pronouncing any vowels, I'd slap him about and tell him his medication was long overdue. Online, I have to tolerate it.:sowrong:

LOL True guys. I don't worry about the occassional typo or misspelling. But, I have a hard time reading posts from those who always do things the way he-man illustrated. One of my main concerns when I see that is that people will get so used to expressing themselves that way that they'll have it carry over into more important stuff and set themselves up for even more ridicule. That would be sad.

Mistakes happen...but for most people online it's just plain laziness.

I've seen it spelled one of the other ways, too. Hmm..so if the way I've seen it spelled isn't right, then that means they're even misspelling words incorrectly? The horror!😱 😛

And what would be really sad is if you tickle someone and hear them say something like "lol" or hear them actually start spelling it . 😀

Spelling was my best subject in elementary school, but I totally sucked at math. I wonder how many of the poor spellers here are brilliant when it comes to mathematics or auto mechanics.

I've overlooked grammatical errors many times because the person may have a learning disability or this or that. When someone claims to have a Doctorate in English and then proceeds to misspell words like 'you' and 'I', then I get a bit irritated. Otherwise, I try to read between the lines.

C'mon Ven, that should be 'showed' !!!

*ducks for cover*

On a more serious note, often when you see horrible grammar or spelling, it's someone on this global web who's primary language is not English, but they're giving it a hell of a try.
Imagine trying to sound smart on a board where German is the language of choice.

Yikes !

Which is why one of the first things I do when I see that is to look to see if they're from another country. After all, english IS a pretty messed up language with so many ways of spelling words that sound the same. Sadly, the vast majority of those I've seen are good old americans...and a handful of brits.

And, I DO agree, He-Man. That would be sad indeed!

The only reason I don't often participate in the Sunday evening Trivia contest because they don't care about spelling. So people abbreviate in order to jam their answer in more quickly. The result is that people like me waste time spelling out the answer correctly.
