Art and Science Thread

Having recently turned my attentions to things more artisitc. I have noticed quite a connection between art and science. The understanding of refraction and reflection, the way light plays off objects and can make them appear differently, the fractal programs that my software uses to make the mountains and trees. It seems I am learning some more about science through my attempts at art. Also I feel my science knowledge is making me a better artist. I guess its somehting maybe Davinci new a long time ago. However having experienced it myself I find it quite interesting. Any thoughts from you artists or scientists out there?

I had made a similar connnection between music and math when I was taking Calculus in high school. I soon found I could do my math homework much easier if I were listening to music while I did it.

😛, seriously though....

I'm passionate about color. There are times when I spend hours, literally, trying to capture a color from a piece of bark, or a bubble in a wave, and I have to give up out of frustration!

I've been a painter by profession for a number of years, but I'll never be happy with it. It seems that the one thing art and science have in common is that simple fact that you can never completely master either one.

A couple of years ago, I started playing with electronic renderings of paintings I'd done and vice versa. I'll never forget the day I sold my first "hybrid" work. I felt like I'd discovered light or gravity. It was so much better than selling my frist "regular" painting as it combined something I knew very little about in the drealm of science (computers) with something I know better than my own reflection (paint). It's not something I do often, but it's fun for a change of pace.

OK, realizing I'm rambling....I'm going to end this. Good thread idea Kurtchacutie. What type of "art" are you currently into?

Hi Joby, Currently I do mainly alien landscapes and cosmic/space kinds of pictures. However I also do other kinds of weird effects ,sort of psychedelic, things that play around with the nature of light. Thats sort of how the science part comes in. The thing almost all my stuff has in common is very bright colors. I love bright colors it kind of makes me happy when I look at them. For me I know much more about computers and science than painting so I am kind of excited that things turn out OK. I am certain you are a much better artist than me. The software I have makes up a lot for my lack of artistic ability.😀

Guitman is right. My drum teacher told me that good mathematicians can be good musicians too. I think it's all down to notation and symbols. A good understanding of them makes you a good reader of both. But that's what I remember, so don't take my word for it!

Some you may know I'm an artist (yes, here in the TMF). Not many know I'm actually studying electrical engineering, which involves physics. Very boring. I find it harder to pin-point the connection between art and science. True, light and reflection involve to two, but most of the time they can contradict. With certain styles of art, you can make as abstract as you want, defying the natural rules of science altogether. That would be my two pennies.
