I had the Santana CD "Moonflower" playing in my car today and I remembered this thread. "Black Magic Woman" was originally done by Fleetwood Mac (pre-Buckingham/Nicks) but Santana's is the version that made it big. Great song!

Meanwhile, the Fleetwood Mac version of 'Black Magic Woman' is RARE. I have yet to encounter it on a CD. I once had it on some dopey compilation of the history of British Rock or something back when I was a kid, but that album's long gone.

Ah, a cover. I always thought Grand Funk's 'Locomotion' was a lot better than Eva's (and much, much greater than the sappy, drippy, teenage bubblegum version by Kylie Minogue way back in '88).

Can I include interpretations of a standard? Two wonderful, yet very different ones. Earl Bostic's 1954 version of Cole Porter's 'Night And Day', and Frank Sinatra's 1957 version, recorded with Nelson Riddle. Very sweet.

I found a live version of "Black Magic Woman" by Peter Green (co-founder of Fleetwood Mac). I also saw that the original recording of "BMW" is available on the UK version of Fleetwood Mac's "The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac". No song samples available for that one, though. Here's a little piece of the live version... scroll down to 'disc 2', 'track #2':

I always preffered the Blues Brothers version of Soul Man to Sam and Dave's.

I love Mindy Smith's cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene. She even got Dolly to sing on the backing vocals! Beautiful!

Three Dog Night did a few covers I like:
"One" by Harry Nilsson
"Try a Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding
"Your Song" by Elton John

My cover song is appropriate for here....

...and its "Popsicle Toes" by Diana Krall. But I forget who did the original verson.

"Lets hit the flor and go exlplre those popsicle toes."

Michael Franks wrote the song and recorded it, but a definitive version? I couldn't tell you.
