LOS ANGELES – The Walt Disney Co. said Monday it is acquiring Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing characters like Iron Man and Spider-Man into the family of Mickey Mouse and WALL-E.
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters. Many of them, including favorites such as the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, were co-created by the comic book legend Stan Lee.

Hmm, I'm not sure how to feel about this. I am surprised it sold that cheap. And I don't know what direction disney will take with movies and with content of the comics or if they just decide to take a hands off approach

If Disney does anything other than a hands-off approach, comic book fans from all over the world will probably be incredibly pissed for years to come. Just look what Disney did to my precious Chronicles of Narnia! 🙁

They've let Pixar do their own thing (Thank God!), so there is hope for Marvel.

DC has been part of the Time-Warner monster for decades and continues well enough. Odds are Disney will treat the Marvel the comic book property the same way.

Odds are that the real goal of this was rights purchases for the Movie and other media downstream profits, not the comic company itself, which is more of an afterthought. Cash wise to a monster like Disney, the profits made by the comic side of marvel are the sort of cash that falls out of their pockets when they pull out a hanky to wipe Cap City/ABC's nose.

On the other hand, Disney has a history of being cheep cheep cheep when it comes to minor companies it buys up. So we'll see what happens.

Myriads

I fear censorship and political correctness on the part of Disney, stifling the Marvel characters and the artistic process.

The main reason is so they can cash in on the Spiderman likenesses and Ironman since Disney has no real outlet to garner boys' attention. I was worried about content wise but Disney has done some PG-13\R rated stuff, they just shop it out to groups like paramount and whatnot

I was checking out this hot chick at the bank when this news flashed on the ticker, just behind her. I instantly forgot about her and was just standing there all shocked! I said something (I don't even recall what, maybe a simple, "Oh shit.") and she looks up at me, confused. She was hot, but this was some big, huge goddamn news!

I'm hoping and praying Disney keeps a hands off approch! I think its obvious that Disney wanted the characters, not the comics. Hell, last night I fell asleep watching X-Men: Evolution on Disney X-D...they already own some Marvel cartoons, since they bought the Saban catalog. I suspect they are going to have the Disney Channel be for girls, while Disney X-D will be for boys, anchored by Marvel stuff. There is A LOT Disney can do with Marvels characters (cartoons, video games, movies) and, if done right, lots of money there.

I think there will be nothing noticable from "our" end, except maybe Marvel stuff being sold at Disney stores. Don't look for anything drastic, like the Little Mermaid joining the X-Men or Mulan joining the Avengers. One thing may be for certain...probably no more Howard the Duck (there was a lawsuit about the character back in the day). Disney already said that they will honor all of Marvels agreements (ie movies) and when the deals expire, they will "reevaluate" and decide what to do (ie, no more outsourcing). Until such a time, it will most likely be business as usual, from our perspective.

Long term, I'm just worried about if Disney will try to make editorial decisions about Marvels comics...which I hope they won't do! Although, maybe they will invalidate Spider-Mans deal with Mephisto! Spidey dealing with the devil...that really bugs me! But, on the positive side, maybe Marvel will reprint the old Scrooge McDuck comics!

This will be terribly interesting to watch unfold, but I wouldn't expect to find a Mickey Mouse head replacing the star on Captain Americas shield.

I'm deeply displeased and concerned, but I just read Brian Clevinger's post on the subject on Nuklear Power and thought it made a lot of sense. I'll share.

Disney buys Marvel. That came out of nowhere. Since Marvel wasn’t in any financial trouble and under no pressure to make any deal at all, it’s certain the terms are quite fair to Marvel and its properties. So, no, we are not going to see Amazing Spider-Man turn into Chip ‘n’ Spidey’s Rescue Rangers. All signs point to Business As Usual at Marvel Comics and they probably have better leverage for film and animation projects beyond those currently in the works, so they can make more money. Meanwhile, Disney is probably looking to grab exclusive distribution rights to those movies, getting them more money. By all accounts, this whole thing sounds like a very Pixar-ish kind of deal, and I think that’s worked out rather well for everyone involved, audiences most certainly included.

LOL! I've been teasing Fireguardian all day with the possible hybrid properties:

The Amazing Spider-Mouse!
The Incredible (Donald) DUCK!
Iron Mulan!
Cinderella Surfer!
Snow White Queen!
Beauty and Henry McCoy!

My favorite right now?

GOOFDEVIL!!!

Good ones, M, my friend. *Still chuckling*

OK, Disney bought Marvel. In 2013, Disney/Marvel should purchase Superman! LOL!

YOU ARE SO MEAN!! My sould cried when I saw the news. There will be no Disney Marvel Hybrids. Disney is the Devil! And what the hell is Universal going to do since they have Marvel Island at their amusement part. OH MY GOD! Please gon't let Disney bring my X-Men into Disneyworld. GAH! The agony of that thought.

And risk making their titles even lamer than Disney can? I certainly hope not.

C'mon...it would be the ultimate "screw you" to DC! Don't out it past Disney. Superman as a Disney property...

DC has better properties than Superman in Batman and Green Lantern anyway. XD

So now all the greatest comic book heroes will become corrupt, satanic, Middle Eastern hating Disney characters marketing sex to young children?

Fantastic...

I guess in some ways this could be ok... Disney has considerable resources at their disposal, and the idea that they'd buy up Marvel's lineup with the intention of screwing with it seems illogical. Then again, do any other original Valiant comics fans remember when Activision (*makes the sign against evil*) gobbled up THAT fine company? Blech.

They make so much as ONE musical, and I reserve the right to come totally unglued.

In my mind, Mickey and Donald don't factor in to the equation.

I keep thinking that Marvel is now owned by the same morons that created "The Suite Life of Zach and Cody.":banghead:

Even Hitler was shocked by the news!

Ideally all it will mean is you will see Wolverine plush toys at disney theme parks and spiderman webbing around magic kingdom.

For movie content i do worry but since they have farmed more adult things to its other holdings, I may be ok with this. Plus, this deal may give Marvel a chance to re-acquire the movie rights from Fox Fantastic Four and X-men
