dungeons and dragons

I just remembered this thread today at work.

Looking through your stuff, cloud. It finally makes more sense to me. Even though it's 2nd edition, I still think it's great. I only have intimate knowlege of 3.5. 2nd edition kind of clicks to me because of that.

Chosen: Did you finish those cenobites yet?

Myself, I am kind of twiddling around with a new type of undead that I'd like to make. Pretty freaky little thing, too.

Oh shit! I completely forgot about this thread as well. :wow:

Yeah, I finished those a while back. They're not on the computer I'm currently using, but give me a couple days to scrounge around for my hard copy and I'd be more than happy to post them.

Wouldn't mind seeing your undead either. Next to aberrations, undead are my favorite type of foe 😀

I can't wait to see that. Those guys are serious badasses!

I'll probably get it up either saturday or sunday. It's still in the "refinement" phase so some minor details will be pending.

For anyone interested, Some of the Dragonlance books have 3rd edition Draconian rules and stats in the back. Played a Bozak engineer in one game, had a blast.! Think they have the stats for the good dracs out there as well.

Kang's Engineer's! hehe

I've tried Dragonlance before. I like it, but it doesn't hold a candle to the "Planescape" setting methinks 🙂

BTW: have any of you ever tried a D&D-based computer game called Planescape Torment? Sheer brilliance.

Alright, I basically concocted the undead critter in my head to amuse myself for that last three days, so I'll have to get it down on paper before I post it here.

I'm shooting for tomorrow (sunday).

Hey all,

Can anyone tell me about this game? My 14y/o wants to join a group a kids to play this game but knew to ask me if it was ok. My recollection of D&D is from the 80s when some teenage boys, I believe, either committed suicide or murder. Anyway, this game has gotten a bad rap in the past.

D&D s a wonderful concept, although its parent company seems more concerned with squeezing the players for money these days. Bastards.

Basically it's like Tolkein on steroids: there's a number of different worlds you can adventure in and you can choose what race and profession your character is. The absoloute best world is what they call "The Forgotten Realms" and don't let anyone tell you different. 😉

The bad press you hear is mostly from fundementalist, religious idiots who think anything from D&D to Ozzy Osbourne to Harry Potter is an excuse for Devil worship. It's harmless fun that is great for imporving maths skills (just look at a character stat sheet to see what I mean!) and firing the imagination.

Actually, that's the only world I feel comfortable playing in.

If I were a D&D FR character, I would probably be a half-elf ranger. Kind of reflects my nature.

The DL setting isnt the best,, I agree, but the books are very good. The last game we played was a whole uni created by our GOD (Games Orientation Director), and he allowed PC's brought in from other settings, as long as the 3.0, 3.5 rules fit and nobody threw game balance off..

worked out really well.

Not familiar with Torment, just Neverwinter Nights. Gonna get NN 2 whn I get a chance

Oh, come on, you got to be kidding me! Still this stuff after all these years? D&D has nothing to do with murder, suicide, satanism or whatnot. The few people who have committed suicide supposedly because of the game had very serious psychological problems to begin with, and, sad to say, might have done it for other reasons eventually anyway. These are isolated cases of very troubled people who couldn't tell fantasy from reality. D&D isn't dark, it's those people who brought their own darkness to it. Definitely not normal behavior from normal people.

D&D did indeed get somewhat of a bad reputation in the past, especially in the 80s, but it was totally unjustifed. Far from being harmful, role-playing can be good for the imagination, for creating bonds with friends and ansd for developing a sense of teamwork.

I can see that this thread has already got a lot of replies, and I know that my own post is redundant, other people having no doubt explained the situation much better than I possibly could. But after reading the original post I just had to contribute. I can't stand hearing such mindless hogwash about RPGs (no offense, I wasn't specifically referring to the original poster, but rather to this attitude about RPGs).

Teenagers these days are into fantasy games. They are all virtual worlds and such...but this game, I'm afraid ,is going to be "dark" and suggestive of harmful things. What does everyone think of this game?

Thankyou for your input... 🙂

It's all bull shit Tickles. Yes there were people who got carried away, but they were all using lsd when they played, and were probably mental cases to begin with. 14 isn't a bad age to get into it, I'm sure you kid is bright enough to tell realityfrom fantasy. If you want to make sure everything is on the up and up, after he plays ask him how the setion went and what beasts he defeated and so on. I don't think you have to much to worry about as long as you keep involved.

What, you're immune to sleep and have a big badger that follows you about the place? :-o

Personally speaking I'm not a fan of paper and pen RPGs because they require much thought and time and effort (I much prefer Neverwinter Nights because you can cheat), but I wouldn't worry about your kid playing Dungeons & Dragons. It's a social game and it's safe because it keeps her off the streets, as well as encouraging maths skills and gets her imagination working. Especially if the Dungeon Master is a nutter who has liches jumping from rooftops in the middle of towns and elder fire elementals living in the old stove ("It's a perfectly logical place for a fire elemental to be!", apparently). All that nonsense about people committing murder or suicide or whatever BECAUSE they played D&D is nonsense; it's like saying all poets are mass-murdering pederasts because Gilles De Rais wrote a sonnet or two. The connection does not exist, except in the minds of religious types, up-tight bores whose idea of being "fun" is wearing a Homer Simpson tie to work and journalists who like blowing things out of proportion because it sells papers.

So yeah, let her play Dungeons & Dragons. Even if you stop her now she'll most likely end up doing it when she goes to college anyway 😀

Half-elves sleep as much as humans do you plank. 😛

And it's an owl, so neener neener neener. 😀
