Face Your Manga

Yep, if I recall well it dates back to hundred year war, as welsh longbowmen dared french knight to come and sever their drawing fingers by defiantly showing the upturned digits to their foes.

...

Yeah.
Memory served me well.

See under "Origins" as an insult.

That's a folk etymology. Tis a myth; nobody's actually sure where it originates from, probably just one of those things.

I know that's true because Stephen Fry told me on an episode of Q.I :-D

That's a folk etymology.
Admittedly, that wiki did mention it as legend, not fact.
Another tale held French knights started giving the fingers first - to which bowmen later replied to remind the losers their hollow threats.

...

To add more pointless trivia, the gesture itself is usually given with slightly crooked digits, to mock the cocking gesture of archers.

...

All in all, waving one's hand around is never advisable when strangers are around.
Better stick with a stout cane...

I'm not sure; I'll have to rely on the perception of those who have seen me in person.

The French invented nothing. Except dysintery and cholera, the French invented only dysintery and cholera, that's all they ever gave to the world. The English invented the funky hand gesture.

Is it true that in Italy, giving the horns with your fingers is very offensive?

Marie Curie was French...

But Becquerel and Pasteur were French though.

Is that why the English wanted Normandy back?

:sarcasm:

...

Depends whether your fingers are pointing up or downward, and whom the palm is facing.

It can either be an "apotropaic" gesture, to ward off bad luck, or a rude reference to one's wife virtue, reportedly dating back to archaic Greece.

...

Dante himself mentioned a nasty gesture dating back to XIV cent. in his Commedia - namely "fare fiche", which means "giving the ****".
You'd put your thumb between your clenched pointing and middle finger, and you'd present it to the observer.
It was considered a gesture of defiance and scorn, sometimes further stressed with a sharp noise from your mouth.

...

Ah... there.
Yet another valuable contribution to human lore.

:headbang:

Yeah; we'd gotten far too much from the Venetians and felt the need to spread the wealth >_<
Quite commendable of "you"... them... whichever.
Unfathomable how they eventually managed to lose the war.

Holla at yo damn boy!

I actually had a suit and tie like this and I used to have a picture with the late Gene Upshaw.

Well they had a 19 year old blonde virgin leading their armies. Who wants to be the man who killed a blonde 19 year old virgin? I'm sure there were a few who'd've liked to have plunged their sword into her, but we won't go into that.
