That's a folk etymology. Tis a myth; nobody's actually sure where it originates from, probably just one of those things.

I know that's true because Stephen Fry told me on an episode of Q.I :-D

Admittedly, that wiki did mention it as legend, not fact.
Another tale held French knights started giving the fingers first - to which bowmen later replied to remind the losers their hollow threats.

To add more pointless trivia, the gesture itself is usually given with slightly crooked digits, to mock the cocking gesture of archers.

All in all, waving one's hand around is never advisable when strangers are around.
Better stick with a stout cane...

The French invented nothing. Except dysintery and cholera, the French invented only dysintery and cholera, that's all they ever gave to the world. The English invented the funky hand gesture.

Well they had a 19 year old blonde virgin leading their armies. Who wants to be the man who killed a blonde 19 year old virgin? I'm sure there were a few who'd've liked to have plunged their sword into her, but we won't go into that.
