For the young'ns. What was the first music video you remember seeing?

I could be wrong but I think Micheal Nesmith of The Monkees is generally given credit for the first legitimate music video entitled Cruisin'. This was before MTV.

True perhaps, but I thought you were talking about the videos emerging in the late 70's and early 80's that could be easily viewed by the masses to promote album sales.

I wasn't allowed to watch MTV as a kid, but I remember being about nine years old and my sister watching it and the first music video I remember seeing was Mmmbop by Hanson. Not one of my prouder memories 😀.

I love all the videos you mentioned, M. All of them held me and my friends particularly spell bound when they came out!

Oh no, I was. Sorry. 🙂

No sorry needed here. I still love you.

MTV was a refreshing change at the bar I went to at the time....until the owner figured out that his juke box was just hanging there collecting dust.

shoot cannot remember what one but i believe it was 80,s hair metal

I'm an old'n but we didn't get cable tv until long after mtv's debut. First video I saw was

Still one of my fave videos of all time altho seeing Tawny Kitaen on the Surreal Life kinda took a wee bit of the luster off. 😀

I'm an old'n too but I believe the Dire Straits vid was the first that MTV showcased. It was very cool to be part of that history. Too bad MTV (originally MUSIC TELVISION) doesn't play much music anymore.
XOXO

Even though I am a DJ, I never really got into music until I actually started working as one. (Seriously, when Savage Garden first came out I thought they were a new type of gardening product :zomgrabbit:)

Anyway the first music videos that I ever watched was
"Everybody (Backstreet's back)"

Ah memories :munch:

Interesting topic!

Hmmm...my only sibling is 12 years older than I...and I remember him forcing me to watch "Cherokee," by the band Europe! lol!

When I actually started caring about music...
The 3 that truly stand out in my mind are:

Stone Temple Pilots - "Plush"

Soul Asylum - "Runaway Train"

Pearl Jam - "Even Flow"

I could go on and on...but the early 90's alternative era changed my life!!! Been playing guitar for 18 years as well...and I can honestly say that the sight of those 3 initial videos influenced me to learn the instrument!

The first time I ever watched Mtv, I saw this...

I haven't watched it since. :disgust:

Ok, seriously, I believe the first I ever saw was this one when it was brand-spanking new....

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VZ5bS3_BCDs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VZ5bS3_BCDs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The Safety Dance video!!! that had to be the weirdest video I've ever seen...then again, the song was talking about nuclear fallout🙄

Serious? All this time I thought it was about some douche who had issues with people who don't like to dance.

If my memory serves me correctly (and it usually dosen't), I think the first official MTV video was Flock Of Seagulls "I ran (so far away)."

The first bonafied music video I watched was Van Halen's "Jump."

I was eight, and my friend had to point out that the girl who was singing wasn't actually a girl...It was a guy with really long hair!

Who would have thought that only eight short years later, my hair would be longer than his/hers!!!

My memory is probably a little dustier than Dussicar's but I seem to remember Nesmith's vidoe was premeired on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the early to mid 70's. I also think I read where Nesmith was one of the people who started MTV and owned a piece of it in the beginning.

These were my first

I think I saw a music video before this, but the first one I remember seeing was when I was around 8 years old. VH1 was showing Pink Floyd's The Wall, and I happened to tune it when the children were wearing those freaky masks and marching into a meet grinder. Needless to say that freaked me out and I had nightmares for the longest time afterward.

Back in my country I used to wake up to this as a child:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5AfTl5Vg73A&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5AfTl5Vg73A&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Funny, since we don't speak Portuguese back home.

I couldn't tell you for sure, but the music video I remember seeing many a time in my youth was "3 a.m." by Matchbox 20. A very nice song as well, I might add.

Safety Dance....Same as Slacker! I was riveted....Also "Wrapped around your finger"...the Police...totally weird music video....but I loved Sting so I didn't care!
