Greatest NBA player of all time?

This is a tough call. Jordan was probably the best scorer and shooter, but he was not a big rebounder.
My call for this, looking at an all around player, would probably have to be Wilt Chamberlin. I say so for this reason. Wilt was not only a prolific scorer, but he was also an incredible rebounder, usually getting more than 1000 rebounds a season in his prime, and was also an intimidator, and shotblocker, in the inside post. He did more than just score.

Yes Mitch, I will agree Wilt was awesome....BUT what about the other stats like assists, steals, defensive player of the year awards, and RINGS!!! That is why I still say Jordan.

peace out,
daddy

I agree with Jordan, but not just cause of the rings....but because he made others around him great.
I know people point out that Jordan never got anywhere without Pippen. But I look at it the opposite way. Jordan was already a great player but he needed others around him that would feed off of his energy.
Jordan made superstars out of players like Grant, Pippen, Paxson, Kerr, and helped control the attitude of Rodman.
Jordan wasnt just a great individual player, but a team player as well.

Jordan gets a lot of credit, but I agree he was mostly a scorer, as was Dr.J.

My pick Larry Bird, for all around technique, and I'm more of a Lakers fan too, so there. Hope no one sees this..........

Greatest NBA Player of All Time

Move a little further back in time guys. Bill Russell.......... When the Celtics ruled the universe and the anchor of the team was Bill. No high scoring guy, but he always stopped Wilt, Jerry West, and any others.

Larry Bird is close... big white guy who worked hard and proved it could be done..... Dr. Julius, cleared for take-off, a step and a half over center.....

it is too hard to name the greatest player because many of them played different positions. for example, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul Jabar cant be compared to Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Jerry West.

but if i HAD to, i would give it to Wilt. no one could stop him and he could grab rebounds like all dominant centers.

I'm going to agree with the daddy.. Not only was he good, he made everyone he was playing with play good.. Bird is still my boy though..

Oscar Robertson

for playing the point guard position at 6'5", he led the way for tall point guards like Magic Johnson to come in and dominate. He did some things that still aren't done, like averaging a triple double for a season, and his career stats are almost in triple double fashion. A pure player, to be sure

And he was great for the game itself. To me, he deserved every penny he made because he was the reason for the increased revenue in NBA basketball and Television ratings. He had alot to do with making many people very, very rich.

peace out,
daddy

daddy makes a strong argument about the rings. Wilt didnt win as many as Jordan. I think Jordan was certainly the best we've seen in the last 40 years, since Wilt retired, hands down, but.. I still think Wilt has a slight edge over Jordan, due to his intimidating presence, his defensive presence, and his scoring and rebounding ability combined.

Jordan is the best I've ever seen in my lifetime. I remember a game against Utah in the 97 finals in which Jordan was so sick he could barely keep his head up during time outs, and yet he scored 38 points and was the difference maker in the win.

Well, long ago, I've accepted, to my ultimate benefit, that it's not Hawthorne Wingo. The tears have stopped... :xlime:

Larry Bird is the best player I ever saw play, but those who came before him (Oscar Robertson, Bob Pettit, Jerry West), in the 60s and 70s, I've seen relatively little of (ESPN classic being the cure). Bird was a deadly outside shooter, the man who I think really popularized the 3 point shot (it was instituted in '79 in the NBA) that is so much a part of the game today. But he could score from the inside as well. His ball handling skills were excellent and his name is not surprisingly synonymous with great passing. He rebounded well and played good fundamental basketball. And he was a good on-ball and off-ball defender. Plus he was a great leader and a winner. What more could one ask for?

If we went by rings alone, obviously Bill Russell is our man. He has more rings that he has fingers to wear them, and that's absolutely ridiculous in any sport. But over the past 25 years, I think the NBA has had some remarkable basketball players: Magic Johnson, Bird, Dr. J., Kevin McHale, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwan, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, Isiah Thomas... and I'm not even including any current players.
