Have a Police Question? Ask me I will answer to the best of my ability.

Folks: A red arrow is a red light. Until it turns green you can't proceed. If you could proceed, the red arrow wouldn't be mounted there in the first place. In NYC you can't turn right on red anyway, unless there is a sign that says you can. So when you see a red arrow it should be basic common sense that you don't proceed.

only yellow is stop and proceed and thats all over the US red is stop and wait for green

How many times did you let people go for speeding or something? [if you even did that ...?]

I've got a bench warrant in another state for FTA on a speeding ticket. How serious is it? I'll pay the fine, but I really don't feel like spending any time in Baltimore's city jail. What do you think my best course of action is?

Because the badges were originally made of copper.

I heard that at one time COP stood for Constable On Patrol That was back in high school during the 80's when I heard that

As a truck driver, there are some laws I hate Like the split speed limits some states have Like Illinois 55 MPH for trucks over eight tons, and 65 MPH for vehicles less that eight tons

I always wondered how the police feel about those laws

For what it is worth,I do respect most police Sadly, just like any other job,the few bad apples make the rest look bad

That never bothered me however there is good and bad in that the question is does the good outweigh the bad. The reason is it takes longer rather a longer distance for a heavier vehicle to stop the downside is cars tend to get annoyed and may take chances to try to get around them.

and yes COP does stand for that but in the early 30's the name copper was the reason I said. Cop I suppose could be short for both. If the whole word was in caps then prob yes.

My Dad is currently designing the new police database for Australia. One of the biggest complaints he receives is the amount of paperwork that comes with being a police officer. This new database aims to cut the paperwork down two-fold.

In your experience as a police officer, would you say the paperwork outweighs the actual police work and duties?

Yes absolutely ie a drug arrest just to name a few of the reports are, A Voucher , Booking Sheet , Arrest Report , Request for Lab analysis ,F250 (Reason for the stop) , Print Cards and the Accusatory Instrument. All of these forms ask the same pedigree info so your writing the same thing over and over why not just enter the info once into a pc and have the pc print all the forms needed. Oh and god help you if the perp is underage like 20 more forms and notifications.

Wow. I can imagine that it would get frustrating, MasterPaladin. Departments would obviously be aware of this, is there currently and/or was there a push to try and minimise the paperwork? Because I just think that police officers could better utilise their time on duty.

yes and no the problem comes in ok wait ie You make an arrest tell the typist all the info let a clerk do it and get the officer on patrol (This don't work) all info becomes 3rd hand and therefore circumstantial. All the forms I mentioned before have to be done in triplicate and some even 5 copies yes carbon does wonders but a pc can make 5 originals why can't the pc remember name dob addy telephone next of kin ss# drivers lic # discription and the format of all the forms so type it all once and pc spit out all the forms.

Do cops really give out tickets more towards end of months to meet quotas?

Also, real a cop really bust for someone speeding 10 miles over(75 in 65) or are they lenient to that point and if so, whats generally the limit to where you are really at risk for ticketing

In my experience yes they do I know they say there is no quota but thats bull there is 25 Parkers 10 movers and 3 red lights. If you don't meet that quota you may find yourself walking a foot post.

That is up to the officer generally they give you up to 10 in some cases you can get a hard nose who will summons you for over 5.

Quite a responsibility you handled, MasterPaladin... I got no questions yet so far, but I just got stumbled here. *salutes*

TY lol but I'm retired now. I will not keep any secrets I once posted in channel 5 news forum a thread Police Secrets it had quite an impact on the public. I didn't want to do that here only because that forum dealt with NY'ers so to them it meant more.

Is there a trick to hit the center of a target on a shooting range?

Is there a trick to hit the center of a target on a shooting range?

in pd we point and shoot if your aiming using sights steady pull slowly never jerk the trigger. In order to see if your jerking the gun before you shoot load 1 bullet in the chamber spin it so you don't know when it will fire slowly pull trigger again and see if the gun moves when the hammer falls if it does your anticipating it going off and throwing the shot. I always shot 100 and I have the medals to prove it.

As for the red light discussion earlier, in Michigan you can make a righthand turn on a red light unless there's a sign posted that says "No Turn On Red".

Have you ever shot a person?

No but I came very close to 3 times and would have been justified to shoot fortunately I was able to make the arrest without having to.

About the right on red that is so in many states even in NY but in NYC you can't. That law is reverse here you can't make it unless a sign says you can.

I have a New York Fraternal Order of Police sticker. I was kidding to my wife that I should drive up to a police cruiser, flip the cop the bird, peel out and speed off and when he pulls me over, show him my sticker.
Do you really think it will save my ass ?

after that hmmmm well I hope you have the cash to pay a few tickets and be ready to take a course to reduce the points on your lic. lol

I've had friends who are in law enforcement at various levels. One of them complained about BS warrants...having to pull someone in that everyone knew wasn't guilty just to make some politician look like they're "making them do their job". Have you ever experienced this?

I've also known 2 officers who were killed in the line of duty. The partners of both are really messed up now kicking themselves around for not being able to stop it. Both have been on admin. leave at various points because they became a danger to both themselves and others around them. I'm hoping for your sake that the answer is no. But, have you ever seen/experienced this? How well does NYC support officer when one of their brothers is killed?

You don't think after the money I donated to the police dept, they wouldn't cut me just a little slack ?

I don't know about NYC. But, up thisa way, drug dealers snatch the emblems for their cars in hopes that the police will let little things slide and decrease their chances of a traffic stop leading to more. It's been done too much to continue working. So, flipping them off and then tearing away...? I wouldn't count on a break. lol

I never had to do a warrant we have a special unit that does that but yes the BS warrant you mention we called a ground ball warrant meaning it's very easy to effect and as with all else they have a quota as well. On the good side a place like NYC a quota with them was not usually a prob lol.

I personally knew 17 young officers and one great sgt and 1 super lieutenant who died and no the department only has one treatment and thats take your guns put you in the station house and send you to a psychologist once every 4 months like that helps. The sgt and lieu. both were suicides from lack of support by NYPD but thats my opinion.

Ann pretty much said it FOP has 2 types of members affiliate and active affiliate is usually paid for for just that reason. The FOP alone won't do it
