Try to talk about general things. Movies, music, school activities, and such. Many times a solid conversation can start by discussing general events.
Also, one thing I read, and learned over the years on dates, is to try and talk a lot about the girl. Ask about her interests, her life, her classes, her work, etc. Girls, especially as you're getting to know them, don't like a guy who is all "me, me, me". If a girl feels you are very interested in her life, work, opinions, viewpoints, and feelings, they will tend to respond more positively to you, and the date will go better.
