If any of our group is in the hurricane warning area for Katrina, hopefully you are taking the warnings very seriously and moving inland or (even better) well to the east or west. I worked in weather for over 20 years and this is about the worst storm I have seen in the Gulf of Mexico. I hope everyone down there heeds the warnings and that smart thinking in this regard saves lives. Makes me glad I live in New England, though I'll eat those words if the next one comes right at us!

I'm kinda in the hurricane area...

I live in Folsom, Louisiana..that's above New Orleans, and the property my mom,step-dad , sis, and I(along with two dogs, two cats and a parrot) live on is on a huge hill...no need for us to worry about flooding here(in fact, if it floods here, you can be damn sure the "Big Easy" will then be the "big swimming pool"....well, you know what I mean...it'll be pretty shitty in N.O. wether it floods here or not)

No time to evacuate to the west or further inland now...(I wish we'd known it was gonna get THIS bad...I'd rather be a bit further inland )...we'll be in this old concrete dairy barn that my step-dad's family has used before for this kind of stuff. Not the most ideal situation, but it's better than staying in a single-wide (which, while nice, won't be much good if a tree comes crashin down on it. lol)

We got a generator, so we won't have to worry about power for awhile--hopefully-- after the hurricane passes. But don't be surprised if I'm not on here for awhile..cause with all the trees nearby, I wouldn't be surprised if my computer gets trashed.

Well, hopefully the concrete barn will keep us safe enough and that I won't be offline for TOO long ....and good luck to anyone else who isn't far away enough from the hurricane yet

Hey y'all,

There are some of you out there that I have not been able to email as I've not been in my normal stomping grounds where my address books are. I thought I'd post here and just let you all know that I'm ok, that I've cleared totally out of the digs and emptied the gallery in New Orleans, but will be staying at my other home in Biloxi. I can only relocate so much before I have to stop and break for a while. From the looks of traffic on I-10, it's a parking lot between New Orleans all the way to Mobile, AL....and that's where the local news stops reporting.

I'm boarded up here on the MS Coast, and I've enough supplies to last a nuclear winter. My little abode should be ok, I'm on high ground so my only worry is a twister that falls...and I'd rather take my chances with that, than be stuck in that traffic in the middle of something barely friendlier.

Wish us luck and safety if you think about it....it would be MUCH appreciated! I just hope that storm surge doesn't go over 20 feet, or I'll be swimmin'!

Will be in touch with y'all soon!

Good luck to any other hurricane riders that linger here!

I hope all of our members and the population in the hurricane path come through ok I drive big rig for a living A few hours ago we got a company wide message on our sat-com keyboards that any trucks in that area were told to get out asap

All of you in the path of the incoming hurricane will be in my thoughts and prayers until it finally passes. Keep yourselves safe, guys, and let us know as soon as you can after the storm passes that you've made it through alright. We'll be worried sick until then....

Mimi :grouphug:

Latest news reports say that the hurricane is category 5 with sustained winds of 175mph and gusts over 200mph. OMG, get out of the way and stay safe down there. :grouphug:

All in the path of this monster are in our thoughts and prayers. And to think a few days ago I was moaning and groaning that we're going to have rain for our vacation. Suddenly, that doesn't seem so important. You guys take care of yourselves down there. We'll be showering you with prayers. Give a yell if you need anything.

Hold on tight, He-Man, JoBelle, and any others still battening down. You're in for a very scary, powerful ride. There's a thrill to riding out hurricanes, but when it gets up to Katrina-proportions, best duck-&-cover.

Nature's been a Mutha this Summer on the Gulf Coast, but what you have heading up the wazoo is a monster. Just get through the big winds, and if it's going to be awhile before y'all can be online, try to get word to all of us here on the TMF about how you're faring.

Oh, BTW--Since it's been alittle while since that area has seen this kinda hit, I just wanted to remind you that it's nearly impossible to follow all the practical guidelines handed out by the experts.
a)I'm not you, and fortunately enough for you, the reverse applies, too. With that out of the way, I'd just like to highly endorse copious amounts of alcoholic beverages, proportionate to the strength of the storm at the time of consumption. If you see trees fly by the window drink more. Got it?
b)Try to maintain an even keel during the aftermath. If your useless inlaw decides to have a total psychotic breakdown thanks to the captive-audience, let them. Think of it as TV.
c)They will constantly drum in messages like "Don't sit with your face pressed against the window during the worst of it", and "Stay inside when the eye of the storm goes through". Think of these as suggestions rather than advisories, and then proceed accordingly. How many of these are you going to get to experience in a given lifetime, anyway?

The residents of New Orleans are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope everyone stays safe down there.
My cousin in Miami had his home leveled by Hurricane Andrew, also a Cat 5 Hurricane, in 1992. Oddly enough, his uncle, who also lives in the Miami area, loves this kind of weather if it isnt directly affecting him or his family, because the uncle, who is another cousin of mine, is a Hurricane Chaser. He has flown into some of the worst Hurricanes imaginable, and told us stories about Andrew.
I have been through only one Hurricane in my lifetime that I can recall, Hurricane Gloria, which hit when I lived in CT in 1985. That one was only a Cat 1 or maybe 2, I believe, with winds of about 90-100 MPH. Yet, it was still bad. A tree fell on my best friend's power line, and he had no power for 5 days. We lost power for 24 hrs, and had family visiting from Fla. It was scary.
Anyhow, my thoughts, and prayers are with the people of New Orleans, and anyone else in the path of the storm. Any TMFers in that area, like Joby, please stay safe. Hopefully, the storm will pass and spare loss of life.

Mitch

I'm sorry, but that is almost comically ironic about your inlaws from the Sunshine State, Mitchell. That'd be my luck, but worse. I'd be visiting relatives in Missouri, or Colorado, and the first landlocked hurricane on record would develop...

Unless you're like that guy that even the Mayor can't get to leave his house. Then it's just best to put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.

Luckily I won't be in that situation..the wind's will be pretty bad up here, but that old dairy barn has stood for at least 50 or more yrs...so it's pretty solid(except for the windows, which don't have glass or anything. Oh well, that'll probaby end up bein a good thing. lol

In Louisiana, that guy in the mayor's house is called the Racketeer(badda-bing!).

Heck, yeah! If you're good with the dairy barn, sit back and enjoy the show!
Seriously, good to hear that all's fine thus far. We're well out of harm's way over here, but getting some stout squalls time-to-time. That's one big-assed storm... :wowzer:

I live in N. Louisiana but have many family and friends directly affected by this tragedy. I'm getting the same feelings I had when 9/11 hit. Cell service is shakey all over the state right now and i'm having trouble getting through to a lot of my buddies. I wish everyone would pray for us right now.

We're storming the gates for you guys with prayers all over. One other thing we can do to help... I just checked e-mail after being away a few days. One of the e-mails I had was from the Coffee Cup Team...makers of some of the software many of us use for our web sites, etc. Their home offices are down in Texas and they're asking folks to send donations down there to be used for the refugees headed to the AstroDome. Here's the full e-mail if anyone wants to help out that way....

Hello,

As many of you know CoffeeCup Software is a socially active company. In the past
our users have raised over 1 million dollars for September 11th efforts and over
$50,000 dollars for victims of the Asian Tsunami.

Hurricane Katrina has given us a different challenge. We have accessed the
situation and have found a way we can all help. Since CoffeeCup Software is
located in Corpus Christi, Texas (a couple of hours south of Houston), we are
calling upon anyone who receives this e-mail to send 'Goods' to our office. This
will directly help the thousands upon thousands of American refugees that will
be entering Houston, Beaumont, and througout Texas within the next days and
weeks.

Our office will collect what you send and will drive these items by cargo truck
to the refugees where they are located. Over 25,000 people will arrive at the
Houston Astrodome tonight and we expect many waves of refugees over the next
month. We will collect items for the next 60 days and will make trips once a
week or more as needed.

Currently many Charitable organizations are overwhelmed and we want to make sure
the Families and Children will be given what they really need without wait. Send
as much as you wish, we have plenty of storage.

Some items we believe they need are:

Diapers, Baby Wipes, Infant Care Items
Personal Care Items (soap, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, hygeine items)
Clothing (socks, underwear, shirts, shoes, pants, shirts)
Long Distance Calling Cards, Batteries, FM Radios, Walkie-Talkies
Toys (coloring books, crayons, puzzles, any activity toy)
and more....

Our Address is:

CoffeeCup Software
c/o Hurricane Aid
226 South Tancahua Street
Corpus Christi, Texas 78401

You can also order things online at places like Amazon.com, WalMart.com,
Target.com, and others and have them sent directly to our offices as well.

Please do not send food, water, or money. This will be handled by Organized
Charities. Send what you would personally want if you were placed in a very
uncomfortbale position for a very long time with little or no money (use your
best judgement).

We will be documenting our efforts by Web Cam and Pictures and these will be
posted on our Website soon.

If you would like to Donate money you can do that here:
