Just venting

My mom told me that she paid my tuition from last august in full and she used it as a tax deduction ( :Grrr: :ignite: ) and today, in the mail I got a notice from the PA office of attorney general saything that they never reveived any payments, had tried to collect many times, and were unable to, so they were taking the matter to small claims court :ignite:
 
Good luck, Lime. Does your mother have any evidence of her payment? Perhaps that would settle matters.
 
She never paid. She told me she never paid. But she couldn't let me use tuition as my own tax deduction because then she'd lose me as a tax deduction. Which is why I think she had me in the first place, but I'm an only child.
 
How did she claim you as a deduction if she didn't pay it? She'd have had to have some sort of proof. If she falsified that, HER problems are just beginning.

That's the thing that I don't understand, because when she handed in her receipts, she handed in the bill that said please pay before December 16th of 2002. I don't know why the CPA didn't tell her no to that, but I hope she gets audited.

Don't turn you Mom in🙁 Man, maybe you can make arrangements to pay the loan back with installment payments, and your Mom pay the payments.Did you file your taxes that year? I hope things work out for your Lime.
 
My school's idea of an installment plan is $500 down, then the rest of it in 3 weeks or so.

have you talked to the financial aide office? if you are living on your own, you may qualify for grants as well as student loans. but regardless, if your mother claimed the payment on her taxes... she is the one who will have to worry about cellmates. her and her tax preparer.

if you are called to court... be honest. you didn’t do anything wrong. from the posts I have read, you seem like you have a good head on your shoulders. don’t let a wing-nut mom bring you down.
 
Well,I don't know the situation so I won't get too deep into it, but - in theory - if *someone's* mom screwed them over just becuase she didn't care about her kid, then heck, yeah, turn her in because in a sense of justice it's what she reaped... and besides, as a taxpayer I don't want to have my $$$ going towards a lawsuit against *somebody* whose trying to advance further in life and got purposely mislead.

But if she's okay most of the time.... then it's just anothe dang bump in the orad of life and maybe momwill realize that she (temporarily) messed up a good thing. It ISN'T the end of the world, after all.... colleges want money, and will work in whatever way needed to get it from you.
 
Since I commute from home (ironically, I chose to do so because it would be cheaper), they have to use my parents income, which means I only qualify for loans (according to my school financial aid office). Usually they play solitare on their computers and they act annoyed when they have to do actual work. After this fisaco, I don't think I want to go back.
 
don't give up. if this particular way to a college education doesn't work... get out on your own (no matter if it takes a flat and a fast-food job) and apply for those grants.

it took me way too long to take life by the reigns and make it my own. but no matter when you do it, it feels good. you can do it. just remember that a year is nothing (this is something you will realize all too soon, believe me.) and the rest of your life is what really matters.

Having been in a somewhat similar situation once myself (my loan and grant funds were held up due to a paperwork glitch once, way back when - I found out during the 1st week of classes that my tuition hadn't been paid and my classes had been dumped) the best advice I can offer is to go in and talk directly to someone who can ACTUALLY fix things for you (the school comptroller, for example). That's what worked for me. If you just talk to some department clerk, you'll usually be told "no." Talk to a bigwig, and ask them for a more reasonable payment plan. 🙂

On the subject of financial aid, I know that for federal aid (Stafford Loans, Pell Grants, etc.), your parents' income counts against you REGARDLESS of wether you live with them or not, until you turn 24. There ARE exceptions, of course, but only if you've been orphaned, were ever a ward of the state, served in the armed forces, etc. Private aid and aid from your school may have different rules, though...
