Here is the story from CNN.com
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on charges related to illegal dogfighting.

Vick and three others were charged with violating federal laws against competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines.

The indictment alleges that Vick and his co-defendants began sponsoring dogfighting in early 2001, the former Virginia Tech star's rookie year with the Falcons.
here is the link........
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/07/17/vick.indicted.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

There have been some graphic and horrid details about this such as Vick and another person in the indictment picking out dogs not fit enough and killing them by drowning, hanging and other means.
I think things just got worse....and if true not only does he deserve jail, but a permanent ban from the NFL.

Again nothing is proven and someone is innocent until proven guilty, but it doesnt look good right now.

I heard on the radio today that several dead pit bulls were found buried on Vicks property. He is a multi millionaire, how can he be that stupid to risk it in such a way??? :sowrong:

Because he is that stupid.

Before I say anything, I've decided to move this thread into GenDis as it is actually news that trancends the world of sports. I would like people who do not usually go into the Sports section to have a chance to know about this and to comment on it. So, this is why you'll see the redirect on this one.

Ok...Vick. I mean....I'll be honest. You all know how much of an animal activist I am, and I am not afraid to admit that this story and some of the pictures I've seen of these animals brought tears to my eyes. Tears of rage.

This is another example of celebrity status causing people to feel and act as if they are above not only the law, but the accepted rules of a civilized society. I have never been a big fan of Vick to begin with, but my reaction to this has nothing to do with that. However, the reasons I never liked him are the reasons I can see him being involved with something like this. Him and his bling-buddies, or posse, or whatever you call a bunch of guys with no regard for life while reaping the benifits of stardom and station, killing dogs for sport. This is just the sort of thing I can see Mike Vick being involved in. He's always been about Mike, and little else has mattered. It's why he's been called a "coach-killer". And you know...given this disgusting story, who knows? Maybe one day it'll be a literal description. I mean, if you have no regard for the lives of "Man's Best Friend", how long does it take before you have no regard for Man's?

He's a thug and I cannot wait to see him in prison. Of course, he's gonna lawyer up and continue to say he knew absolutely nothing about what went on on his own properties, never noticed the buried dogs, never thought his homies could be such criminals...blah, blah, blah. Oh yeah, continue to turn on his family and say they were "taking advantage of him". Yeah....bullshit.

So, who thinks the NFL is going to do something about this? The official stand at the moment is that Vick has not been proven guilty. The Atlanta Falcons have a lot invested in this guy...and we all know how Atlanta fans can be. He could shoot a kid and half of them would still want him starting at QB. However, regardless of his "innocent until proven guilty" status, this is going to be a PR nightmare for the NFL. This is a league that prides itself on its superior relationship with the fans and the communities it exists in. It's the top sport in America, has the toughest doping policies (which still aren't the best, but at least they don't look the other way until Barry Bonds gets his record like MLB is doing), and has a deep relationship with the United Way and a myriad of other national and local charities.

I doubt the NFL is going to want to be associated with this. The last thing they want is to be even seen as covering this up, like baseball's doing with Barry, WWE is doing with thier hulking steroid machines and NASCAR is doing with thier "caution flags of convenience". The NFL has a large stake in being considered "above that" among American sports. Plus, you have a relatively new commissioner with something to prove. The tough stands taken against Pacman Jones, Albert Haynesworth and others are testament to that. I feel they are going to find some way to suspend Vick until the court thing is over.

Regardless of what the NFL does, think about the Falcons' road games. Like I said, Atlanta fans are probably going to fall in line behind him (not all of course, but a large portion of them), but what happens when they have to travel to say, New York...where a lot of these dogs were from? How much love is Vick going to get from 65,000 fans on the road? And are the teams on Atlanta's schedule going to want to deal with the security issues alone, not to mention the stigma?

I hope the NFL does something quickly. Vick is involved and he knows it. This story has actually been going on for awhile, and authorities have taken thier time and done a lot of digging before bringing an indictment against Micheal Vick. I doubt they'd bring one without decent evidence. If found guilty, I pray he serves time. None of this "community service" bullshit in the form of doing an ASPCA commercial, or "probation and a fine". Let Mike sit in a cage like an animal.

Maybe he can serve time in some backwater facility where the guards make the prisoners fight each other. That would work for me. I am that sick over this.

If.............I say if he is guilty of this,I say let a pack of mean assed dogs rip him to shreds That would be justice

Thanks Dave...I had considered putting this in Gen Discussion, but me being mindful of the rules...... :cool2:

But thanks for the move.
On the subject I think the NFL will act. Arthur Blanke the owner of the Falcons is out of the country right now with the GM, but has told Vick he wanted the truth and Vick was on thin ice. Being so close to Atlanta I get all the local goodie gossip and such. I dont think the NFL will act yet...it will give Atlanta a chance to do it first and most likely...not to create a circus enviroment Mr. Blanke will ask Vick to take a "leave of absence" and put him on the Non-injury fail to perform list or something like that. I cant remember what the term is for a non-football related reason to be away for the team. After Atlanta has a chance (Ill assume a week at the most....or more than likely sooner. The NFL does not want this in the headlines without action for too long.) then the commish will suspend until further notice or strongly suggest that Vick take that leave of absence or be suspended.

Rob

Dave brings up some great points. Honestly, I don`t think the NFL will act very quickly, but they will eventually bring the hammer down on Vick. This is completely new territory for the league to deal with. They`ve dealt with drugs, murders, rapes, steriods, gambling and just about everything else but not this. I still can`t believe Michael Vick could be so stupid to risk everything. But as maniac stated, he is that stupid. 😡

I tend to agree with you. There are a number of catagories they could suspend him over or put him in until this is over...conduct detrimental to the team/league, for exapmle. Hell, they could even simply make the decision to knock him down to practice squad. He's still on the team, he's just lost his starting spot to, say, four other guys.

But, you're right. Vick was on thin ice to begin with concerning Mr. Blanke, not to mention the fact that many consider Vick at least partially responsible for the firing of Jim Mora Jr.

I know I'm hot about this issue, and I know we have a court system for a reason and I do want to see it take its course. However, does anyone actually believe that Mike is an innocent bystander in this, taken advantage of by his family and posse? Come on....

(By the way, Rob, I personally don't think anyone's gonna eat your lunch over putting a legitimate news story in GenDis even if it involves a sports figure. There were several Chris Benoit threads in GenDis because they were news that related to things outside of sports. The main purpose of Sports is to have a place to discuss our teams, seasons, standings, games and such without clogging up GenDis with ten threads devoted to "Did you see that HUGE Jets win?". No biggie here.)

what a pathetic performance...

(sending big hugs to Dave, Rob, Uncle and all the rest of my enraged dog-loving friends over this sick fuck.) :twohugs:

I just heard and apparently the FBI is involved as well and the investigation's been going on a long time. I shouldn't do this as an ex-law student but I'm gonna convict him already in my mind anyway.

"Maybe he can serve time in some backwater facility where the guards make the prisoners fight each other. That would work for me. I am that sick over this."

What's that Dave? I think I might have something in my eye~did I hear you say something about a "back door facility"? That sounds pretty much like a good place to drop him. (Sharpens the blade on her samurai sword...) Aw, shucks, I'll even drive him there...

XOXO

I just read that article and I feel sick to my stomach. I really pray that he gets that jail sentence, and maybe it will show others not to do this, although unlikely. I agree with someone else who said that he should be attacked by the dogs that he abused, hell they should just dispose of him, the way that he disposed of the poor dogs. Bear with me, since my writing skills are not wonderful, but I can get my point across. I really do not understand people at all. I really hope that he gets what he really deserves.

If the team acts i hope that they do it in such a way that the man doesn't get paid (though the player's union might bitch about it)...if they demote him, suspend him or make him take a leave of absense do it in such a way that hurts him financially because really that's all these millionaire/billionaire athletes understand is the almighty dollar....then let the court system deal with him

If guilty, well obviously someone is, there is no excuse for this kind of behaviour. In this day and age, with so much entertainment readily available, such a cruel act is unnecessary and should be dealt with severely.
Pitbull type dogs have had such a bad reputation for such a long time, and its mainly down to people like this guy. Animals with the potential to be so loving, trained to be fighters, dying on the job or put down later. Sadly the people behind it will never get put down for their crimes, and in a case like this - chances are that a slap on the wrist and an apology are the closest he will get to punishment.

Will The REAL Animal Please Stand Up?

:ignite: :ignite: :ignite: :ignite: :ignite: :ignite:

I say four stakes, a jar of honey and a big freeking anthill.

But you know, I'll bet even that would be too good for all of 'em.

The Athlete Class

Michael Vick should have been banned from the NFL from the beginning of this horrible story, which now has appears to have become far grotesque and revolting. Getting indicted on federal charges is at least some good news, since the new commissioner has no balls whatsoever to do anything about this piece of rat turd.

I love all dogs, yes even Pit Bulls. As far as blood sports, dog fighting is the absolute lowest of the low. I've seen pictures of how these animals' faces are ripped to shreds from fighting other dogs, and some of these creatures are killed if they are too weak to fight, as the report indicated.

Since Vick is a professional athlete, don't expect much. As Dave2112 indicated, he'll surround himself with lawyers and get the best justice money can buy. (see Simpson, Orenthal James)The corruption in the Athlete Class is intense all the way down to Pop Warner. We all went to high school and seen how Jocks were above everyone, even the faculty. If they raped a cheerleader or some other girl, for example, it was covered up or little was done to their prized "champions".

I know some athletes to be really good people, and will give you the shirt off their back. I knew a linebacker on my college's football team who a part of MEN AGAINST VIOLENCE, who protected women from sexual abuse. But there were some of his teammates who weren't as great a person as he was.

Most athletes are fucking bullies and they know most of the time they'll get away with shit, even rape. I know some of us here may have been athletes, (I played baseball when I was a kid) so I don't want ruffle your feathers. No offense intended.

I will say this, before I get to the other stuff. Due process should be carried out; a lot of people will eat their words on Vick participating in dogfighting if he's cleared on those charges. I thought of the Duke lacrosse case when this story first surfaced.

I do believe Vick has to be punished in some way, because the dog fighting occurred on his property. As owner, you are responsible for everything you own, even if something happens there that you didn't do.

If he didn't know & reports say that it's been going on at least three years, that's negligence on at least a middle level. If he knew & did nothing, that's negligence on an extremely high level.

Now, do I believe he did this stuff? Yes, I do. I'll conclude this post with this thought: What's sad is seeing famous/rich people not use their brains, or worse, use their brains for bad purposes.

The indictment, after a long, exhaustive investigation (apparently), has this man torturing animals before killing them. Bashing heads on concrete, hanging, shooting, etc. In his own home, he played a sadistic Auschwitz SS camp guard, with his cronies, on animals who were deemed to be less than worthy in a fight.

Dave mentioned a half and half scenario: I heard that the Atlanta newspapers conducted a poll today. 45% want him banned from the game right now, 45% want to wait until a jury decides, and 8% or so (the final tally leaves out the margin of error) have no opinion at all.

Well, here's my opinion. I'm sick and tired of the National Felon League, and the glorification of criminal culture. I'm sick and tired of the media entities who aid and abet in the advancement of said culture. This year will find me pursuing healthier, more rewarding activities on autumn Sunday afternoons. No more criminality.

Acceptable behavior?

If this was my favorite NFL team and this was the starting quarterback, I would scream for him to be cut yesterday. His effects and gear would be on the parking lot of the Georgia Dome in a cardboard box.

You know damned well people are going to defend him. That's the scary part.

If he was an Oakland Raider, it would have been Fort Knox for us Chiefs fans!

I hope he loses everything, kills himself, and then burns in hell for all eternity.

What HE did is totally inexcusable!! The authorities should put HIM in a dog fighting ring and make HIM fight an angry pitbull to see how it feels being torn apart. Then after he gets his butt mauled for a while they should dunk HIM in a tank for a couple hours to see what drowning feels like....then HE should be choked to see how it feels to be hung by the neck. After all this, HE should be slammed against the ground. (much harder than any defensive end would slam him...he is a QB and that's a penalty)...see how much he likes that....F*^#ing Ahole!! And to think I almost traded for that piece of sheeeeet. Anyone that voluntarily participates in any activity that involves cruelty to animals needs their head examined..I'll never understand it.

Let me adress a few people here. Steph, I don't see your link getting removed. This is the reason I moved this thread into GenDis, people who would not normally read about sports should be aware of these things happening in thier world and how they can get involved. No troubles, luv. :cool2:

Sam...I agree with most of what you've said, but I say give this commissioner a chance. I don't feel, personally, that he has no balls. He has a lot to prove and has already taken very good steps against the likes of Haynesworth and Jones, as I mentioned earlier. Perhaps he may falter, but I again say give him a chance, you might be surprised. Also adressed to Sam, regarding sports culture at even lower levels. I was also an athlete in my younger days, and can attest to the attitude prevelant in even high-school level sports. I went to two different high schools...one in my first two years, and one in my second. The first two years, I was on the football team of a Catholic school (which I never wanted to be at, but that's a different story...at least they had a good team, so that was fine...up to a point.) In my sophomore year, there was an incident (several, actually, but this one caused a lot of problems) where a few kids from the "geek" area of the population were beaten badly. Two were in the hospital. I must say here that I was not involved in this. This "catholic" school engaged in a cover-up of epic proportions. We were in the playoffs and were favored to win a state title. Parents complained, and were threatened, in a subtle way, of having thier kids' tuition challenged...all kinds of things. This was after the intitial attempt at cover-up. For my part, I tried to say something, and was not only threatened with violence from some of my "teammates", but was bumped down to fourth-string receiver. At this point, my mother pulled me out of the school, which I was more than happy to leave. Eventually, the entire story came out and there were consequences. It took some time, though, as this was a school of mostly "rich kids" whose families sprung for high-level lawyers. Not to mention that the school itself was the darling of this particular diocese...including a large financial stake.

In a twist of serendipitous fate, the school I wound up going to for my junior and senior years was more than happy to have a receiver from my former school on thier team, and I was welcomed. By my senior year, we were in the state championships and we won (as serious underdogs) against...you guessed it...my former school. Justice indeed.

I'd like to say to Knox, that he's right on the ball with the events that took place before Vick's indictment. This is not the Duke rape case. This is not a single politically motivated prosecuter up for re-election. This is the FBI, among other agancies. Some of us remember reading about this case before Vick's official indictment. They took thier time making sure they had enough evidence before even bringing the indictment. This isn't a witch-hunt. Also, nice to know that Atlanta fans are somewhat more concerned about this behavior that I intially thought, at least at this point. It's nice to admit to being wrong, and I may have overstated my opinion of what the fans would do. I hope that my comments did not offend anyone from Atlanta. This was a general statement on rabid fanship in Atlanta, much like the aforementioned Oakland fanship.

In closing, I would like to once again adress those who think the NFL will cover this up. I totally disagree. Time will tell, of course. However, I stand by my statements that the NFL is very concerned about thier image and practice with things like this. Look at the stand taken against the Vikings players in the sex-boat scandal, and again I bring up Hayneworth and Jones. Are they perfect shining examples of sports morality? Of course not...there is plenty of work yet to be done. But, compared to the things that are gotten away with in baseball, the NBA and other sports, the NFL...in my opinion...is doing a fairly good job of policing its own. Vick has more than one hurdle to clear. The owner of his team, who he's on thin ice with anyway. A new coach who really doesn't need this (and who just happens to have a back-up QB capable of starting for almost any other team, and that many fans think should be the starter anyway), a commisioner with a desire to make a mark and prove the NFL to be capable of handling this...and that's not to mention the fans of cities across America who will be showing up in force at any Atlanta away game. This will not be swept under the rug for a myriad of reasons. Even in the highly unlikely event that the NFL slaps him on the wrist, the fans will not tolerate it. We hardcore NFL fans love our game, and like our standing among the major sports. Our players (most of them) give of thier off-time generously, and many communities benefit from NFL-based programs. We love our sport and will not see it sullied, standing idly by.

Thanks Dave! :redheart:

And I'm with you on several things. Michael Vick is pissing in his drawers as we speak. This just keeps getting worse for him by the second and NO one is standing by him at this point. Because it's undefendable activity. You couldn't justify being part of this if you had all the magical powers in the world. Even the RATS are jumping off of this sinking ship folks. What with this being a federal indictment, (who prides themself on bringing down the likes of Al Capone) he's pretty much done for, once the guilty verdict comes down he might as well blow his scumbag head off. NFL can not and I believe will not protect him.
XOXO

Too real...

Dave, thank you for shedding light on the corruption of Catholic high school sports, and sharing your personal account of the devious activities that occur.

Salute!

I think you're right and I'm not going to judge the new commissioner too early, but I fear that he is turning into Bud Selig. No need to explain that disaster.

First, thanks to Dave for moving it here, as many of us don't hang out in the Sports forum. This kind of thing upsets me in such a deeply fundamental way, I've difficulty even reading about it, much less responding coherently.

Dogs look to us people to love them and take care of them. That anybody can so grossly and radically abuse them just tears my heart out. It upsets me far beyond any point in which any punishments against the perpetrators will do little to make me feel any better. I'm just glad this was found out and stopped.

At least this will get a lot of the other pro-athletes that participate in dog fighting to stop.
