--not for NEST, for the doctor's office.

I don't usually post things like this, but I am unnerved, to say the least. Bill works in the Asheville mall (store manager for Select Comfort bedding), so he has heavy contact with the public at large on a daily basis. There were two possible cases of H1N1 flu reported in our area, and although I tried not to get worried, underneath, I was; then on Wednesday, the results were that neither of those two cases were H1N1. I took a breath and tried to relax, thinking sadly that we'd jumped the gun canceling our trip to NEST.

However--on Monday, Bill had had to go to the store in Haywood Mall (in Greenville, SC) and fill in the closing shift for their manager. Yesterday morning he woke up feeling ill--and yesterday afternoon, I saw that there were 10 confirmed cases of H1N1 in SC (now up to 13) from around that area. Then his temperature went to 101.8 last night, where it's still hovering, along with all other symptoms--chills, nausea, sore throat, dry cough, body aches; I called the RN, she assessed his symptoms and then threw me into yellow alert--she recommended seeing the doctor ASAP because he had in fact been in an area with H1N1 activity.

We're heading to the doctor's office as soon as it opens this morning. I am still disappointed that we're missing NEST, but on the other hand--thank God we decided not to go.

There's a 15 month old baby in this house as well, which is chewing at my ability to remain stable here. I'm asking as humbly and sincerely as possible, please...send up prayers for Bill's health and for Jordan's safety from whatever this is. I'm right at the edge of scared shitless now.

I'll keep all of you in my thoughts...as an aside, the drugs used to treat this type of viral infection, members of the cyclovir family, are generally well tolerated and quite effective.

I hope that everything turns out fine! H1N1 seems to be a very scary thing!

You and your family will be in my prayers. May you all stay healthy.

Live well!

Aura,

as much as I was hoping to see you you take care of yours and I will be keeping you and yours in my prayers!!!

I hope all is well, and we shall talk soon....take care.

Oh my! This is certainly not the news I was hoping to see when logging in here this morning. Mistress Aura, I hope you know you've got my support on this one. There's more than one person in that household that I care a great deal about. I wish you all good health and I hope that Bill recovers quickly.

O boy, hope it's not H1N1. But even if it is - don't worry too much, as far as I heard it is not much more complicated than any other flu!

So do you have any results yet?

hope he is ok and dont have the swine sucks u wont be making it to nest but this is more imporgtant hope all is good

My prayers also with you all. Prayer is powerful, lets keep this going. The more that pray for their well being the better.

I will keep you and your husband in my thoughts and prayers Mistress Aura.

I'll keep your husband and the rest of your family in my prayers. I hope the doctors can quickly diagnose what is wrong and treat him for it.

All Clear

After jabbing him with various implements--swabs, needles, etc.--and having a series of tests done immediately, then the doctor making a call to the CDC contact here at the health department, the verdict is while Bill does have a nasty virus, it's not H1N1. He was in the area, but the trail of cases in SC most likely did not cross his path while he was there. He's on bed rest for the next few days and has to call the doctor directly if there are any changes over the weekend, but all are confident he'll be fine soon. However, I was advised that I'm likely next to come down with it--and at least I'll know what symptoms to look for so there's no reason to worry about what it is. In this case, it's more important to know what it's not.

This has been an eye-opening experience...how sobering it is when you find yourself in the position of actually being involved in a situation that most others are only reading about, when you suddenly realize that almost everyone still functions in that "this stuff always happens to the other guy" mindframe. It's like we live in this mental and emotional anesthesia and stop considering that we are, in fact, all "the other guy" to everyone else, you know? Seeing my husband being greeted at the door of the doctor's office with one of those surgical masks he had to wear for the duration of the appointment was like having ice water dumped on me.

For some reason, that one thing made recognition slammed into me of how badly guilty I am of taking our blessings of good health way too much for granted, and the frightening reality that all it has to take is one rogue bacterium to alter lives forever. While Bill was lying on that examining table, masked and sick and miserable, and while all the possibilities were being considered, tested for and discarded...H1N1, strep, bacterial or viral pneumonia, nonspecific influenza...I realized once again how tenuous the thread of life really is and how easily one can lose permanently someone more dear than most of life itself.

Take care of yourselves and your families, my Friends. Let the emotional novocaine that may have crept up on us over the years wear off and let's go back to giving an honest damn about what happens to people. Inasmuch as this particular virus wave may have been over-hyped--the next one might not be. The "what-if" game isn't always a waste of time, or else why would we teach our kids to look both ways and not to run with scissors..?

My most heartfelt thanks to all of you for your support, well wishes and prayer. :grouphug:

You made me morning, Aura. I'm so relieved to know that Bill will be fine. It sucks to be sick in any form, but there's no comparing a known everyday common virus to an unknown strain. Sorry, you've had to deal with this. We all wish that you guys were here with us today, in good health and having a great time. But since you aren't, this is the best news I could hope for after your post last night. Thanks for the update. All my love and prayers for you.

Thank goodness! I'm very relieved to hear that Bill is going to be OK.

I am so glad he is going to be fine, MA. Take a deep breath and relax, and take good care of your hubby after that nasty scare.

=====================================
First off I am so very sorry to hear that you and Bill had this terrible scare, yet so glad and relieved to hear Bill is ok and doing fine now. I love your quote of "let the emotional novocaine that may have crept up on us over the years wear off and lets go back to giving an honest damn about what happens to people" That is so true Mistress Aura-totally dig and love that quote you said-so much truth to that statement. Sadly in general it is a shame we do tend to take our many blessings for granted when things are going great and happily. However when the storms come, we wish we could be blessed when sadly when things had gone great we were not thankful. It is a sad tragedy for sure when that happens.

It is time like you said for the emotional novocaine to wear off and yes for people to give an honest damn, totally agree with you there. If more people shown more love and kindness and gratitude for their blessings and tried their best to show love and be a blessing to others-the world would indeed be a very much happier place. It is time that all of us try to be a blessing to others in more than just ways that are requested or required-or necessary-but time for us to take the time to take that extra step to be there for others and truly be a blessing. And that is something I do really hope that happens. Thanks for sharing this great insightful eye-opening thread Mistress Aura, it took a lot of courage and I give you kudos for telling it like it is-that is awesome. Hope Bill gets better very soon and stays in good health and hope you stay in good health and remain in good health and both of you have a happy life rich with blessings and laughter.

Sorry Mistress Aura that you and Bill were not able to attend NEST this year; that indeed is a true shame and tragedy, so sorry to hear that, but like I said before really glad Bill is doing a lot better so thanks for sharing. Hugs to you.:bunny::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::twohugs::twohugs::twohugs::twohugs::console::console::console::twohugs:

Aura that is awesome news. Sorry the bunnyman is sick at all, but we have been thinking of you guys since Thurs night and are missing you both. Love you guys and tell Bill to get well soon.

Aura,

Glad to hear all is well. I feel better knowing that and certainly will still keep you and yours in my thoughts.

Take care, hopefully soon we will be able to meet...but until then, we still have the radio show I can call and harass you on.

Rob

Whew! Good to hear and give Bill hugs and some nice warm soup!

This is late, and I apologize. You both were greatly missed at NEST but I am SO thankful Bill is OK. Best to both of you!

I'm so glad Bill is in the clear. And while I didn't see this thread before I left Thursday, you and Bill were always in my thoughts. Miss and love you both!!!
