Anyone else into hobbies on here?

Im kind of a nerd, and am looking to get into Warhammer 40k.

I used to play Magic way back in high school, then switched to 40K one or two years later. It's very expensive (and getting more so as the years progress), but a fun game to play, especially if you can make it to some of the independent Grand Tournaments held along the East Coast or even close to the Midwest. I preferred those styles of tournaments when I played because you're less likely to run into min/maxed army lists that really only include units that are solely designed to win based around the mathematics of the dice rolling involved. It makes for a better, far more fun time when people bring strong and competitive, but not over-the-top armies.

That being said, I eventually quit 40K for Fantasy, which, in my opinion, is a far more tactical game. I haven't played in a while though (especially in the newest rulesets, which kinda pissed me off), but I can't say you'll regret spending the money to paint and play if you get more serious about it and also have access to a group of people to play regularly with. I really wouldn't play at GW stores though: far too many whiny kids versus mature gamers, and the staff can be annoying as hell at times, though I've met some cool ones in the past.

I've been an on and off again 40K nerd for a while now, and although I'm more of a painter than a player I do indulge in the occasional bout of kicking arse with my little toy soldiers. I've tried Fantasy as well, a few times actually, but I couldn't get along with it at all; why it should be that trained warriors with supernatural powers have to expend so much energy climbing over a small wall or changing their formation that they can do nothing else is baffling to me, and the combat system is bizarre. Wish I'd figured that out BEFORE I bought the £50-a-box Blood Knights, though 🙁

I don't play the 40K games as I am an over the road trucker But I do have two of the Rhino APC variant models that I need to build

I tried the 40K thing, cause I wanted to paint the miniatures as a hobby after playing the Dawn of War video games so much. Wasn't too bad at it I found out. However, having a desk lamp that damn close to my face as I painted would give me the most awful headaches. After my dad died I kinda stopped, and never took it up again.

Took the words out of my mouth there. Same for me.

The Warhammer 40k universe is the most badass thing out there, it's kinda like playing Starcraft on every drug known to man: Huge organic hiveships that devour entire planets, powerful guns that can destroy entire solar systems, legions of undead metal-skeleton-thingies, etc. 😀

I currently collect an army of Death Korps, but haven't really painted any miniatures in a while.

And me. Minus the WHF stuff.

In the process of saving a bit of money to get a Traitor Guard army started after doing very little for the past long while.

I think Starcraft was originally supposed to be based on 40K, and Warcraft on WFB, until something went wrong in the negotiations or something.

You're the second person I've ever known of who collects Death Korps, which is a shame because Death Korps are win. Nowadays it's all Cadians with their weird Tron/ Laserquest-looking schtick or the homoerotic Catachan models.

Also, arts:

A long, long time ago I used to have a rather impressive army of Tyrannids and Dark Eldar.
Sold it all a long time ago, though. 🙁

The closest I have come to Warhammer 40K is the Dawn of War game for the PC.

As for nerdy hobbies, I technically play D&D. Though I say technically because I haven't actually played it since 2006. I am still interested in playing though. Even if the only reason why I am still interested in the game is because it provides me with wicked-slick reading material to read whilst going to the bathroom.

3.5 rocks!

4.0 blows!

I wonder why they stopped selling the Tallarn Desert Raiders. You know, the good guys with the turbans and the desert camo.

They just seemed to disappear overnight. It was so strange ?!?!?

In the GRIMDARK of the far future, there is no "good guys" - only shades of very, very dark grey. And most of them are just a mild hue change...

And they're still available; check the GW site, IG army, collectors section.

Problem is they're metal and thus very, very expensive to make an entire army out of... though for a few more units, not so bad.

E: Half-tempted to get some pics of one of the Fallen I've finished painting up on here... anyone care enough to give me a reason to find new camera batteries? 😛

Out for the weekend, just saw all of these responses XD

Ive been an avid magic player for the last few years, but keeping up in Standard DOES end up being more expensive than it should be. I've heard that 40k is initially a little costly, but once an army is built and their respective codex memorized, I've been told you can keep it for years.

Dark Eldar? Have they actually seen a Codex update in the last fifteen years?

lolz, it is indeed a mystery sirs!

There's a Tallarn special character in the new Imperial Guard Codex though, he's actually quite good. The model looks like a composite of every Arab stereotype since the days of Ali Baba but his rules and abilities are cool.

Nope; still waiting. Even after the Space Marines had their third Codex in four years, the Imperial Guard got redone, and the Space Wolves, of all things, got sorted out, the Dark Eldar are still somewhere in second edition.

I think they're due for next year, although the Tyranids and Necrons are getting new books first.

While I don't Wargame, I am a card carrying Nerd (yup, we have cards over this side of the pond). Granted I don't play CCGs, Wargames or anything like that, I do dabble in writing RPGs, as well as new systems, because sometimes, playing a game just isn't nerdish enough.

Besides I do play a lot of cards... a lot of cards, ranging from Poker to 500, and pretty much everything in between... oh, and Baron Munchausen, this game is pretty damn awesome. Then again, when drinking, all games seem a lot more fun.

I never played any Warhammer. I've always been curious, but don't have the money or time to commit to purchasing thousands of miniatures to paint, and build landscapes to battle on. I used to have a friend/co-worker who would do all that, and he did awesome work! He would get real particular about the rules, too. He'd use a laser pen to justify line of sight, and whatnot. I was more into D&D, 2nd edition and 3rd edition. I skipped 3.5 (When did these start becoming like software upgrades???) and bought the 4th edition Player's Handbook, but I won't commit to it. It's hard enough to find a group who can commit to a game, not to mention as someone here pointed out to me, 4th edition is like World of Warcraft without all the bells and whistles, becoming more dependent upon miniatures and rules, less open-ended, and completely taking away from the role-playing aspect.
