This is a question for anyone who has been to NEST,or plans to go in the future.Do you need a cover story for friends or family to explain your trip?Last year when i went to NEST for the first time i just told anyone who asked i was going to Philadelphia to meet some friends and do some sightseeing.

This year I'm not even telling anyone about my trip.I just asked my boss for a few days off and he said fine.Being single myself i really don't have to account to anyone for what i do with my time.I am curious about how others handle this.😀

If you're old enough to attend NEST you don't need a 'story'. For 9 yrs now I've been telling people that I'm going to visit friends in Philly (or CA or D.C. or wherever I'm headed for such an event), and that's it. Nothing more is anyone's business :happyfloa

Friends and family I told, I was visiting the annual meeting of an online forum I'm a member of - they don't know, what the forum is about though - no one ever asked and it's none of their business anyway.
At my workplace I told people I'm going to visit friends.

I happen to agree with Bella in this instance. I don't feel obliged to give anybody but the vaguest of details.

I was still living with my mom when I went to my first next, but I just said "I'm going to Philly with some friends from college."

Last year I just said "Goin' to Philly"

And that's what I plan to say this year.

heh... last year I told my family it was a gaming convention.

I also told my boss and co-workers that it was a gaming convention. I got quite a bit of ribbing for it. "What's a single guy going to Philly of all places? And for a gaming con?" I am, after all a nerd.
The day before I left, I said "ok, ok, you caught me. It's a fetish convention." And my boss said "Yeah, right. Go have fun at the gaming convention." 😀.

Can you watch my place while I'm gone?

Sure. Where you off to?

Philly.

Really? Why?

To see some friends.

You have friends in Philly?

Sure do. And from around that general area...

Where did you meet them?

Online, mostly.

Nerd. Do I still have that key you gave me...?

That was pretty much it. I used variations of that same conversation when I told anyone about it. Like Mark Twain said, "If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything." 😉

But rhinoceroses never forget...

My excuse

There is a slight possibility that I may go. Maybe.

But...should it happen...just tell my mom that I'm going to drive around and take pictures of stuff, like the Liberty Bell or just to jump in my black rocket and drive around.

I'm sure I could come up with an excuse...

T-giggle, love the new sig!

I do what I always do. I request the time off months in advance and tell whoever asks that I'm going to Philly. If they ask why I tell them for a tickling and bdsm convention...and that I also have a lot of friends up there. I used to be shy about it...not really anymore. Mostly it's nobodies business, but if they ask, I really don't care. I only talk with my parents on average once a week or so...sometimes once every few weeks. It's none of their business as well. I don't know, it's whatever.

Around here, once you go to a place the next time is no big deal. I simply requested time off the first of May and got it within five seconds with no questions asked. My retired neighbor lady is already lined up to take care of my parrots and her big question was if she could have the garage door opener because it is hard on her hands to use the front door key. My mom and the people at work came to their own conclusion that NEST was a convention of parrot owners so they don't ask anymore.

My family knows I go to Philadelphia, but only 2 of my brothers know why.
A couple of people at work know.
If anyone else in my family asks about I just say it is VERY personal & I do not wish to discuss it with them.
If anyone outside the family asks, I would tell them.
I don't go for 'cover stories'. This isn't some sitcom or movie.
Either I tell them or I say it's personal. Period.
Better to remain silent than to lie.

Last year when I attended my first NEST and people asked me why I was going to Philly, I told them about this weekend neopagan wiccan festival where we'll be reciting text from the Book of Shadows while standing in a large pentagram in the nude as I am initiated into an ancient and holy coven that will ensure my eventual rise to High Priest in the years to come.

No one has asked me why I'm going to Philly again this year.

*heehehe*

I never needed a cover story, and I've been telling my friends
for almost a decade, well before NEST was this big, that I was
going to a tickling convention. My friends freely and gleefully
tell their friends, and for a large group, it's the most natural and
fine thing in the world 🙂 Plus, I like to think that it helps other
folks realise that it's okay to have other interests, and to not
ever be ashamed of them.

I tell the truth, but don't elaborate. I just say, "I'll be in Philadelphia for the weekend to get together with friends."

If somebody in my family asks what friends, I say that it's people I met online. That is all true. 😀

Lets see, last year I told everyone I was attending a nail show convention in Philly. This year I'm not going ,so no explaination will be needed. Thank God !

Ditto. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!! 😉

I have an old friend in Philly (Max Speer) who has a blow-out birthday party every year...
