#notips movement!

Status
Not open for further replies.
That needs to change.

I hate the idea of refusing to tip, and I won't be participating, but I will at least acknowledge that when you look past all the cocky bluster and the self-righteous responses of indignation, it's clear that the #notips movement if successful would promote the change that needs to take place. If tipping stops altogether, the restaurant owners and managers will be forced to pay a better wage if they want to attract potential employees. Also, it achieves the goal without government intervention, which is always a plus.

I realize that by continuing to tip I'm helping to perpetuate this sociological dysfunction, but it's something I've always done, and likely always will do. It's just not in me to leave without paying a tip.

What can I say? I'm weak.

You really think that if the government states that by federal or state law it is legal to pay employees $2.13 an hour, and people stop tipping, that this will encourage restaurant owners to increase wages? Sure... sure. And then they lay people off to cut costs. And raise food prices (which will now be equal to what you would have paid with a tip - and then some). You'll have something akin to what Mitch described with one server covering dozens of tables so the restaurant can afford to keep the costs down and profit margin up. Otherwise, the restaurant will fail - and certainly, the food industry might have to rethink its position. I agree, change is needed. But turning the screws on like this, you can drive things both ways... either it drives people out the door (refusing to pay higher costs for the same food) or few will be wiling to work in a restaurant doing such "menial" labor for the minimum wage that they will be forced to accept (assuming most restaurants aren't going to go higher than that).

Tipping was once a "Gratuity" - a gracious bonus for excellent service. Service as a whole is sliding into the ground in more industries than the food industry. Try explaining to the new generation what it used to be like to get a live person on the phone to help you. So we now have complacency for poor service on top of everything else to deal with. It's a great start - I'd love to see a restaurant start the idea of no tips and see how it goes. I work on commission, too. Perhaps, if servers (I h,ate using that term after someone referred to them as "servants") were guaranteed a base salary and then given a percentage on top of what they sold it would incentivize them to offer more to customers (drinks, desserts, etc). Lots to think about other than #notipping. And I don't think it's a sign of weakness - unless you call following the other sheep weak. But that's a whole other herd of problems 😉

I never post here, but this has caught my attention.

In England, our Waiters/Waitresses earn alot more money, and we still have the option to tip and usually do, it's called appreciation and courtesy. America is a very tip-fueled economy, part of the "American Dream" of being rewarded for doing a good job, is the origin. When I was visiting New York, I was taken aback, by how much tips genuinely meant, some people earn so little money without these tips, it's ridiculous.

The fact you don't tip them, for doing a good job, is absurd. To put it frankly. I used to work as a Waitress, and it was one of the hardest jobs I ever did. Dealing with stuck up, asshole customers for several hours, all moaning about something, it was awful. So you make a movement, where douches who think "My muscles give me right to act like a collosal bellend", which, if successfully implemented, would basically make Table serving a fast track to living with your parents your whole life. Nobody would ever do it, if it wasn't for the tips, it strives people to do better, and to give better customer service, rather than looking like a pissed off retail staff, which is what I would've been like if it wasn't for the tips.

Also, bringing religion into it, is the most American thing, that's so ridiculous. Many things are in the bible, 90% of them, are not implemented in today's society, and as an atheist, I could care less about that quote anyways.

Basically, you're being a tight ****, and using bodybuilding as an excuse to do it, is the most pathetic thing I've ever heard in my life. Learn to respect your fellow man/woman, even though they don't have "TOTALLY GNARLY PECS". Also, tipping a waitress only if she's hot? That's pretty fucking shallow, proving the point even more.

pear brings up about waiter/waitress being a very hard job.

I may have posted this before, but I don't recall.

I was a waiter too, although not professionally. In my last year of summer camp, all the older kids in the camp had work experience jobs. I was a waiter, serving, three meals a day, to two different sections of the camp.

We had to wake up an hour before all the other kids, set for breakfast, etc. We always ate our meals very late, and often missed activities, not finishing until late at night. To this day, I don't know how I did it, as I used to be thin and weak as a teenager.

So, like I said, while I haven't done it "Professionally" for a salary, my experience in camp showed me how difficult servers can have it. I stand by my assertion that they deserve tips, in spite of whatever rationale those in this movement of no tipping think they have.

You really think that if the government states that by federal or state law it is legal to pay employees $2.13 an hour, and people stop tipping, that this will encourage restaurant owners to increase wages?
I think I was pretty clear that I'd prefer the Federal Government not be involved. The only exception to that would be to take whatever minimum wage that applies to any other job and apply it to restaurant jobs as well.

And even if the Government makes no such adjustment, I still think it will encourage restaurant owners to increase wages for their staff. Because it's either that or ask for volunteer servers from the patronage, as they will not be able to fill those positions at the current level of pay with no tips.

I agree for the most part. I don't think the government should be involved. I feel like if tips were mandated it could reduce the motivation for servers to provide decent service. Having said that, I have the unique luxury of managing employees who make minimum wage (or higher) plus tips, so I'm sure my opinion might change if my employees were making well bellow minimum wage

Yeah I checked out this page on facebook. A bunch of uneducated meatheads talking down to people who happen to work in the food service industry. To generalize everyone who happens to be a waiter, waitress, or bartender as your servant is beyond piss poor.

If it were me and you didn't tip me...I'd hope for you to return because you'd get the absolute worst service possible. Your drinks wouldn't show up on time...your food would be held under a heat lamp for a long time. I would do everything I could to have you meatheads get up and walk out.

Typical servant mentality. This is *exactly why* most servants don't advance to meaningful positions in our society: Entitlement.
You can fantasize all you want about "If it were me...blah blah blah" but reality says, your BOSS would fire you if you "did everything possible to make us *meatheads* walk out."
Face it. You're talking complete fantasy BS.

You have to be on a whole new level of asshole to do that to people who depend on tips for their livlihood. The recession and economy went into the crapper and these were the only jobs to be found in some cases. To sit there and judge them is wrong.

I'm there to enjoy a meal without the panhandling. Period.
Not to be a Social Worker for a servant (beggar) who made a series of bad career decisions to end up where they are.
They are doing below minimum wage work, and deserve to be paid accordingly.
If they want to feed their kids and pay their bills, they should get a *real* job with guaranteed wages, instead of reducing themselves to panhandling.

You may have reduced the fat on your body, but it obviously went into your head. The fact that you can be proud of this is asinine.

This is a NATIONAL FB movement that is gaining momentum. Tipping is unhealthy and only encourages/rewards the beggars for doing menial "work" (haha, good one) and expecting extra pay.

Coldneck, I get it. You are some "buff guy" who is way too cool for the rest of us. However, to put down waiters/waitresses is over the line. First, you do not know their life's circumstances and why they are in those jobs. There are some very hard workers in the food industry and they are not begging. In case you haven't realized or was too busy "lifting weights" to notice, but jobs in this country have been eliminated. People who were making 6 figures are not finding work, but guess what? Bills DO NOT GO AWAY. So, people must do what they must do in order to survive.

Secondly, a lot of waiters/waitresses are also in school. Think they have time to go to full time work? No. The job is a stop gap. You are basically ripping everyone who does these kinds of jobs. Even the non-students working these jobs are no less "worthy" as well.

How about you do this. BE A WAITER just for giggles. Surely with your good looks and "award winning" personality, you could clean up! The job isn't too hard right? Just bring food from kitchen to table. No worries. Think about all the FINE ASS WOMEN you could meet as well? Dude, think of the possibilities! You could score with a bunch of hotties, make simple money for doing no real work, just to prove your point. Try it for like a week, no need to make a career out of it.

Would you do it?

PT: This post sent me into hysterics!
Answer: Not "NO" but "FUCK NO!!!"

I would *never* *EVER* lower myself to servant status.

The 8/10 - 9/10 Hotties I seek, wouldn't look twice at me if I were their servant.

Servants don't score w/ chics, they are looked down upon, brah! ... they carry food/drink from Point A to Point B. Give them a check, bring said check back to cashier (who calculates bill) then delivers check back to customer.

THIS is where the REAL Panhandling begins: "Thanks so much (fake smile / enthusiasm) Thanks for Cuming ... Hope you had a *GREAT TIME and Cum Again" **BARF**

Servants expect EXTRA $$$ for this ???

I'm here to tell you this insanity must END.

I'd rather bang Primetime, than you. Your point is therefore irrelevant.

Dude, The Movement is about *the furthest thing from a joke* as their is, bro.

All we ask is that you consider our position, and take it as seriously as we take our PECS and LATS.

As with anything in life ... there is no Gain w/o Sacrifice. (Just ask any Yoga Zen Master).

Hence, you get what you work for ... no more, no less.

This is what the self-entitled servants are missing 100%.

You are entitled to NOTHING!

Tipping additional on a Check is OPTIONAL. Not Mandatory, Jackass!

If you want guaranteed $$$, get a good college degree (well, that's a start) and WORK FOR IT ... instead of BEG FOR IT !!!

That is all, Sense.

*bows*

(and continues mass reps > shredding)

Dude, bro, listen, if you take your PECS and LATS seriously, why on Satan's green Earth would you even care about waiters and waitresses? You don't eat the food they serve, because they can't meet your dietary needs (PROTEIN!!!!!!!!) on the cheap, with or without tips. That's why I rarely ever eat out.* Take the troll mask off. Go home. Have a nice day.

*I eat out by request, if you know what I'm saying, ladies. #KeepingItClassy

This is how I know you are either 1) lying or 2) just plain naive. If you think 8 or 9 out of 10 "hotties" don't bang waiters, then you truly are in your own world. Come out to LA and find out...

By the way, there is MORE to being a waiter/waitress than bring food from point A to point B. Being a waiter is NOT easy work. That is why I challenged you so you can find out exactly what they go through. And I got the exact response I was anticipating. You are a hilarious dude. You want us to actually believe you are this "macho buff guy". Ok man, keep it up. We all need a good laugh at your "awesomeness". It is like you are Ronnie and Mike the Situation all rolled into one...

Logic is futile here. The problem is the OP and his pectoral worshiping buddies exhibit characteristics of Home erectus.... It takes a large enough cranium to allow for a significant enough cerebral cortex with a frontal lobe to comprehend language and subtlety, something this species of hominid is lacking. I doubt lying or naiveté are appropriate descriptors either - merely a misconceived sense of self-worth and entitlement.

Exactly. Getting the knee-jerk reactions were easy enough, since this is obviously a fake Facebook "movement" created by people who want to A: piss people off, and B: pretend that they're bodacious bodybuilders.

This is obviously a smart person's parody of an attention-starved teenager who wants desperately to be part of a pretend gang of douchebag bodybuilding bros.
The clues that this is a gag lie in his inept attempts to say stuff that sounds cool to him, but his character lacks any real understanding of the subject matter, save for what he's gathered from Maxim and Men's Health.
As for his junior high school style tales of sexual conquest (inspired by countless AXE body spray commercials), it's an interesting hybrid of an orange-skinned Jersey Shore slimeball, and Eric Idle's "Wink-Wink, Nudge-Nudge" character. So, points for the homage to Python.

You guys are typical NERDS: Over-Analyze EVERYTHING to the point of annoying comic book convention fan-boys!!!

Just like that Simpsons Episode (help me out here, geeks)

We are legit to tha HILT, bra. Sounds like you are on tha outside looking IN ! HAHA!

Ride yer bike an' work out like a cardio princess!
Put on some lifting gloves and go to a COMBAT class taught by a woman (HAHAHAHAHA!!)

That will get you about ... as limp-wristed as you are right now.

I'm not planning to close this thread unless I have to. But I am going to be reminding some people about the rule against name-calling here. I mean, Jesus Christ.

If I have to keep asking for that to stop, some people who apparently think they are completely in the right in this thread are going to be shocked when they find themselves being banned from the General Discussion forum.

by the way, this isn't even an original schtick, though Mr. Pink incorrectly thinks waitresses are making minimum wage.

That was a great clip! LOL

I had forgotten this scene, even though I saw the movie back in 1992.

For the record, I had breakfast today in the Flame Diner on 9th Avenue and left a $2 tip on a $9.50 check. And I felt good about it. 😀

Oh wow, this is especially pathetic.

^THIS^

On a multitude of levels in a multitude of ways....

I really don't know how anyone can take this seriously especially if you look at the OPs facebook page; it just screams for attention! And we're all giving this attention too!

Why am I here? Glad you asked!

I'm just a little restless while working on some documentation and stopped in to see pages upon pages of what can be best described as complete insanity! No controversy here; the OP thinks servers are servants beneath him and don't deserve anything past their paltry wages of $2-$3 an hour. They stand on their feet all day, take insults and pissy attitudes, and expect to serve with a smile. If the OP really thinks it's okay to not give a tip for someone elses service, then he and his fan club is right. Hopefully his family or children don't become a server because there's this universal divine principal of one reaping of what one sows.

Too bad the OP tends not to discuss those who start as servers don't always stay there; many have become doctors, lawyers, actors, engineers, and other "important people" in life. To me, I don't' care if someone remains a server until they retire or die, at least it is an honest career and they aren't hurting anyone in the course of their job.

I don't know what to say about the "pecs" worshiping and other stuff; to each his or her own. But the men I choose to "bang" are real men, not over aged and under sexed adolescents posing as men. Not name calling anyone specific, just a general observation based on a general attitude that looks rule relationships. I've been on this earth long enough to see the exact opposite many times; the hottie with the geeky/nerdy guy, the hot guy with the average or even homely looking woman and everyone seems deliriously happy with each other. Don't even get me started with the Fat Admirers....many of them are smoking hott!!

The other stuff is just stereotypical regurgitated nonsense usually spouted off by someone in desperate need of attention.

Finally, in my humble opinion, anyone who has to raise themselves by belittling others has their own set of problems to overcome.....

I have one comment to make about this thread.. I'm going to comment about the thread itself., and then use an example of something. I want to make 100% clear that I am not going to "Call anyone a name". I am, however.. going to make an observation.

I look at this thread. and how it has deteriorated, and quite frankly, I think this is one of the most pathetic threads in my nearly twelve years with this forum.

I'm one who believes in cutting through all the bullshit, and getting down to the "Bottom line" of things. Bottom line.. about this thread.. the OP posted it for one reason, and one reason only.. It isn't about a "movement", but rather to stir things up.

I look at those who have been attacked in this thread by the OP: Milagros? He is one of the nicest gentleman on this forum. Desdemona? Always a civil, kind lady.

I've said many times.. if the OP and his buddies honestly feel this is a "Movement".. Then fine, let them have whatever "Movement" they want.. However. to call other people.. (long term members.. who are always civilized) names, because they disagree with his "Movement", is both uncivilized, and wrong.

It was not my intent to attack anyone. Just to try and put some perspective on this ugly.. now two week long thread.

Speaking of movements.....................I had two good ones today. 😀
