How do you feel about tipping taxi drivers?
Would you have a different opinion if the taxi driver is also the owner of the vehicle?

Cabbies? Oh yeah, definitely.
They actually work for their $$$ unlike the slacker food/drink servants.

Know this: I DO TIP and I'm not against it at all, **FOR PEOPLE I BELIEVE DESERVE IT**

For example:

I TIP the guy who cleans my swimming pool/hot tub. (annually, X-Mas Bonus)

I TIP the guy who mows my lawn and does the landscaping. (annually, X-Mas Bonus)

I TIP the Garbage Man (If I happen to catch him *before* I go to the gym to shred / OR *after* I get back, depending on the muscle group.

Hope this helps.

In the spirit of constructive discussion on this topic, I wanted to share something my local rock station shared that I thought was interesting:

http://www.theprovince.com/touch/story.html?id=9827405

This guy is starting a restaurant where he proposes to eliminate gratuities in favor of paying his employees livable wages and benefits. I'm intrigued to see how it turns out.

AWESOME Article!

This guy has the right idea!

“Tipping is a broken business model,” said Jones, an admitted neophyte in the hospitality industry.

So many more great quotes in this article.
Leave it to CANADA, home of RUSH, ICE HOCKEY and Captain Kirk to lead the charge.

I am inspired to NOT TIP servants in the USA more than ever.

Thanks for posting this FlatFoot, my Bra.
Epic stuff, dude!

This is a very intriguing concept. A living wage, plus medical and dental. Servers in the US can probably only dream of this.

I would be in favor of this model.. to eliminate tipping in favor of livable wages for servers, as well as the medical and dental benefits. Hopefully, it will turn out well, and maybe start a trend.

Go look at a link..

www.msn.com//America's most- and least- common jobs.

One of the most common:

Food servers and food prep workers.

Average annual income:

$18,000 plus a year.

How is anyone supposed to live on that?

And this "Movement".. advocates not tipping for service given.. to supplement the meager income.

Simply put.. it's a disgrace, and reading that article made it hit home even more..

OK man, First off ... that isn't a link. Not even close.
If you're going to post a link, make sure it's a real link, because I (or anyone else) can NOT reference the article you speak of.

So maybe a class called "How to Create Internet Links" should be in your future to effectively communicate to the rest of us?
Just a suggestion, bra.

That being said, I believe we have grasped the just of your post:

"Average annual income: $18,000 plus a year. How is anyone supposed to live on that?"

I will answer that question with a few of my own directly from the newly created FAQ section:

Q: "Why Am I responsible for the LIFE DECISIONS (Poor career choice. Severe lack of education. Early unexpected motherhood. Overall slacker attitude, etc.) of servants?

A: I'm not. Tipping is a choice, not a requirement. I would rather tip a sewer worker than a pathetic restaurant server/beggar. My choice. Welcome to America.

Q: "How do the homeless live off of $0 per year?"

A: No different than the rest of us. BTW, I give $0 to homeless beggars. (see next question).

Q: How do Used Car Salesmen, Door-to-Door Vacuum Cleaner Reps, Insurance Agents, or any other STRAIGHT COMMISSION employees live when they don't sell anything?

A: $0.00 SALES for the month of April/2014 (example only) = ummm ... $0.00 in Commissions for April/2014! BTW, I give $0 to anyone who approaches me and solicits/begs for $$$.
Be it Online ... or *especially* in person.
(see above question).

In summary: I believe it's much more of a DISGRACE to rely on / expect $.$$ tips / commissions from a complete stranger for doing minimal work (handing me a plate of food / showing up at my business/doorstep and harassing me with your goods/services for sale).

These people are the lowest of the low, and this is a *WACK* tradition that needs to altogether STOP!!! Like the Jane's Addiction Song. STOP!!!

You really are unbelievable.. Nothing but constant potshots...

Of course you had to put "Insurance agent" in there, as a potshot to me. Newsflash.. you don't know what the fuck I'm doing.. or what the fuck I'm selling. It's none of your fucking business.

How the fuck is a waitress or waiter.. a "Beggar". They are a service person.. in a low wage job.. that rely on tips to supplement their incomes. You and your little crowd of people seem to be the only ones who subscribe to this "movement".

My grandfather.. who had far more character in his little pinky,.,. then you have in your whole body.. and who was a CPA, and factory owner/product inventor.. told me when I was very young ":Mitch, these waiters depend on tips, it's moral to be a good tipper"

I'm very sorry to the mods if I "crossed the line" by "attacking" him. I;m just fucking sick of it already. Shit is stirred up, and nothing happens.

Whatever, coldneck.. have your "Movement". 90 plus percent of the country doesn't agree with you or your cohorts. You are not the maven on life..

In case anyone cares...WILLIAM SHATNER is from CANADA!!!...CAPT. KIRK is from IOWA!!! :laughhard:

Your compassion towards those you feel are lesser than you in life is.....er...um....., hell, I can't even find appropriate words to describe...:sarcasm:

You know NOTHING about the lives these people live. Hell, you don't even know their financial status. For all anyone knows, they could be worth millions and just happen to like serving others their food. How about that? They might even have more money than you or....god forbid..be more "shredded!"

Q: "How do the homeless live off of $0 per year?"

A: No different than the rest of us. BTW, I give $0 to homeless beggars. (see next question).

This reminds me of a news documentary I saw several years ago. Do you know some of those "homeless beggars" are living way better than any of us? Some of them actually own homes, cars, etc. They just consider begging their job; and if you've ever had to beg for a living, you'll find out quickly that's one of the hardest jobs to work.

Q: How do Used Car Salesmen, Door-to-Door Vacuum Cleaner Reps, Insurance Agents, or any other STRAIGHT COMMISSION employees live when they don't sell anything?

Well, no argument here; I've worked in commissioned sales nearly 20 years. If you don't hunt and kill it, you won't eat! But you'll make a helluva lot more money than someone standing over your head telling you how much you're worth....at least to me it does.

In summary: I believe it's much more of a DISGRACE to rely on / expect $.$$ tips / commissions from a complete stranger for doing minimal work (handing me a plate of food / showing up at my business/doorstep and harassing me with your goods/services for sale).

I'm sorry you feel that way; as detestable as these careers appear to you, millions consider them honorable professions, including myself. Your opinion of them certainly won't stop them, and as for me, I really don't give much to what and how you think (I'm just a little bored and thought posting in this hot mess of a thread would ease some of said boredom).

BTW, I don't recall hearing what career you chose for yourself and this thread is way too big to go back and find it if you did mention it. In other words, I'm curious as to what you do to make your money.

These people are the lowest of the low, and this is a *WACK* tradition that needs to altogether STOP!!! Like the Jane's Addiction Song. STOP!!!

Mitch....it might be time to step away from the computer for awhile.

If you are proud of your accomplishments and achievements (and an insurance license is a major achievement, trust me), then don't get your shorts in a knot because someone with no education or experience in your field makes a negative comment about it. He's entitled to his opinion (as distasteful as it appears at times) and there's nothing you can do about how he feels about a certain subject matter. So let logic rule on this one and don't let anyone have that much control over your emotions.

Trust me from one Aquarius to another.....we can't allow ourselves to get stuck in emotional battles because we set ourselves up to lose before we even get started. Even if we make a good point, the emotional stuff takes away from our credibility sometimes; it shouldn't, but sometimes it does. I have hundreds (if not more) posts in this forum to prove it, trust me!😈

Now leave him to his widdle opinion because you're not going to change his mind. If you start making this personal, he will too; just let it go and walk away before this turns into the very thing you've spent the last year in this forum trying to avoid......okay?

Peace

OK, so I just have to tell y'all about this...applies to the original topic. 😛 So, I went to dinner with friends and the waitress was TERRIBLE~ I mean really bad. It wasn't crowded and we were her only table. She was slow...she brought out the food at different times, leaving some people completing their meals before others even got theirs. She never refilled our drinks. You get the idea. Really awful.I even overlooked her trying to peek at the photos on my phone as I was showing them to a friend. Being a firm believer in tipping for good service, I figured maybe she was having a realllllly bad night so intended to tip her a bit anyway to maybe give her a boost. That's when she ruined it. She brought our check and told us to take our time. We thanked her and she then proceeded to say that she didn't mind because it was slow, but she really hated it when people lingered too long because it took her away from other patrons. OKay. But then...she went on to talk about how she makes less than 3 bucks per hour...and relies on her tips...and how she hated being "stiffed" by selfish patrons. Did I tip? Nope. I even called the manager to let them know I didn't appreciate it. So, let it be known that if you SUCK at your job, you're not going to be tipped. And you know, I actually felt a little guilty for it because I always tip! LOL

I may as well post a first-hand account of a no-tipping incident from last night.
I spent the last 3 evenings in CitiField watching the local NL team, the Mets, host my favorite team, the Dodgers. (Happily, the Dodgers won two games out of three, which is alright for a road series.)

Last night the people sitting in the row in front of me called for the hot dog vendor to come and serve them. They wanted five hot dogs. They had many requests, such as ten packets of mustard, seven packets of relish, and eight napkins for four people. The vendor cheerfully gave them everything that they had asked for.

The vendor then said "That will be $31.25." (Yes, hot dogs at CitiField cost $6.25.)

"That can't be right," said the person who had been speaking for the four of them, apparently named Joe from the way his friends had addressed him.

"Yes, that's right." said the vendor. "Five times six dollars is 30 dollars, and five quarters makes $31.25."

Joe handed him two twenty dollar bills.

"Your change is $8.75," said the vendor, and he handed Joe a $5 bill, then paused, then counted out three singles, one by one, then paused, and then, in disgust, put three quarters into Joe's hand.

I couldn't believe that the asshole in front of me, Joe, gave no tip at all to the vendor.

PS: No, Joe was not a body builder. He was an overweight middle-aged guy, with a big pot belly. Also unable to do simple arithmetic in his head. But apparently a member of the #notips movement.

. She never refilled our drinks.
What is it with you Americans and refilling drinks? I never met a single waiter in European restaurants (Czech republic, France, Spain, England), who would come and refill my drink and truth be told I don't care that much. I find it rather intrusive, when a waiter checks on your drink every 5 minutes...
To be fair, sometimes they do it, when the bottle is almost empty, to take it away. That happens quite often in Prague.

Anyway, when it comes to tipping, I'd rather tip the cook. The poor guy's never seen, not very often appreciated, because the person who brings you the meal gets all the credits.

Small, inconvenient sized containers, combined with high, asinine prices, makes us not pleased.

I can't speak for all American's... 😉 ...but given a 12-16 ounce cup filled with so much flippin' ice you only get about 5-7 ounces of liquid...it tends to drain pretty quickly for me. For someone like me who tries to drink about 70 ounces day....I usually like more than that in a sitting. 😉 Is ice to the brim of a glass as common in many other countries?

Then again I'm a one who asks for the specific wants or services, whether it is a waitress, hired car or hair stylist so it wasn't the expectation of some unknown. It was her lack of follow through on a request. If I'm paying you to tend to it....please accommodate me.

You did the right thing, and sould be commended for your gut-instinct reaction to Bad Service, the PanHandling, and Ultimately ... BEGGING for extra $$$ after shitty service.

This just goes to show you that brain-dead servants care about 1 Thing ... and 1 Thing ONLY ...
Separating you from your money and siphoning it into their greedy little pockets ANY . WAY . THEY . CAN.

This is what they instictively do. Prey on your kindness. Bitch about their lot in life. Then sit back and watch the $$$ roll in.

I remain firm IMO.

And believe me ... I've tipped many a sernant!
Gave her every inch" of my 5.2" twice and made it hurt.
She was begging for mercy (none give) about 1:30 into the show.

You do know a lot of waiters and waitresses do not make minimum wage right? The tips help them.

In the US, you're right...in comparison, in Australia we do not have a culture of tipping and therefore workers have to be paid the legal minimum wage in the first place. They are able to support themselves with the money they earn for work, without depending on the unreliable generosity or sense of obligation in others.

When people suggest I tip a waiter, I decline unless they've done something exceptional, because I don't want to encourage our country's wages to go down that path.

I read mils post, and I hang my head with shame.. about myself.

When I went to the 14 inning Mets-Braves game on April 20.. I honestly don't remember tipping the vendor. Then again, as far as I recall.. I bought most of what I ate from the concession stands.. and only a Diet Coke.. from the vendor. I didn't have any special requests like the people mils discussed in his post.

Luckily.. I will get to redeem myself. I'm planning to go to the Mets-Dbacks Doubleheader tomorrow. If I do order something from one of the in stand vendor.. I will be sure to tip him/her. I also want to make clear that what I did on April 20th was an oversight, and not intentional. As I posted earlier in this thread.. I'm usually a very good tipper.

Dudes ... my Good God in Heaven ... DUDES!!

Where do I even begin?!?

1. Hot Dogs. Do you know what they are made of? If you did ... yuk! I can't go on.
I would take the spit, piss, puss, blood, snot, cum of a *dozen disease-ridden servants* over eating a hot dog ... especially a Stadium Hot Dog ... any F'n day!

If you care that little about what you put into your body, then you can NOT be reasoned with.

2. Paying $6.25 for a ground-up collection of various disgusting pig, cow, cat, dog, mule, rat, fish, roadkill animal parts is in itself, reason for temporary insanity.

3. Tipping for it, is grounds for the goon squad fitting you with a straight jacket and carting you off to the Rubber Room Hotel for an extended stay!

You seriously TIP a scumbag stadium hotdog vendor for handing you (or more likely, handing it to someone in the aisle seat and interrupting everyone else in your row to eventually get it in your hands) a questionable food item I wouldn't feed a starving dog?!? They expect $$$ for this so-called service?!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?

These glorified loud-mouth beggars are getting paid a wage. They don't deserve a penny more for handing you a pre-wrapped, severely over-priced, penis-shaped so-called edible food unit.

I'm at a loss for words. I really am.

Shout out to the #notipsmovement for hitting 2 major milestones:

!. Over 60,000 Likes and 500Kviews on Facebook, biatches!!!

2. Over 1,000 tip-free meals. 'Nuff said.

We decided to celebrate with a brand new video showcasing the shredded & sculpted physic along with some killah dance moves that will make Michael Jackson sit up in his grave and take notice.
Oh yeah, he's 'mirin'.

Here ya go ... Ladies, Ma Bitchez ... take it easy on me ... my inbox is already overflowing with major compliments/special request/mad love proposals.

Peace OUT!!!

1. If you actually read my post, then you would know that I observed the people in the row in front of me buy and then eat five hot dogs among the four of them. I do not believe that it harmed me in any way. Did you actually read my post? Or are you incapable of understanding that watching people eat something will do you, the observer, no harm?

2. All of the food items at MLB stadiums are overpriced. All beverages are grossly overpriced. If you aren't willing to put up with that, then watch on TV from home, or eat a big meal before you enter the stadium.

3. On tipping, we are in total disagreement and it is not worth discussing it with you.

To the rest of the TMF members: If the same item, whether a hot dog or something healthier, is available both at the concession stands and from the vendors who walk around the stadium, then make your choice. Wait in line at the concession stand and pay no tip, or tip the vendor who carried it and hands it to you in your seat.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I'll throw in my 2 cents (no pun intended).

If you don't want to tip your waitstaff, maybe you should instead pay your waitstaff a decent wage like they do in Switzerland.

Thanks for the "create-a-link" lesson; we are now all better people because of it!

So what do you do to make your $$$ KIS ??? I've satisfied your curiosity, how about you satisfy mine? [/QUOTE]

Why such a harsh judgment on people that you have no idea of their life? Again, for all we know, some of these people may be millionaires passing the time serving the public on their terms. There are some people who believe that service is the highest honor of work (and I completely agree with that sentiment). Your judgment on people in the sales/service industry is all that it is; a blanket condemnation based on a bunch of prejudices and preconceived notions with no basis in fact or truth. Where is Ashton Kutcher?!? Hahahaha!
Seriously...Fucking Seriously ... there are no *MILLIONAIRE WAITRESSES* who do this for fun.

If you really, really, really believe that ... and are basing an argument off of this totally fantasy scenario, than I have nothing left in the tank besides:

ask about: "Delusions of Grandeur".

Dude, you are hilarious. Now you're a senior project Manager? Um, yeah. What can't you do? You're physically gifted. Women just fall all over you. You refuse to tip "menial servants". You are just the epitome of what a man should be.

Yet, you are typing this on an internet forum where even the guy buried in a cave can tell everyone he is God's gift to the world too.... Keep on typing buddy, keep on typing.....

But back on topic, if you don't want to tip, that is fine. I certainly hope you visit these establishments just once. Because if you visit often, you just might have extra ingredients in your food and no way I knowing the extra ingredients are in there. Just sayin'......I doubt you treat the servers with any respect....

I honestly thought this was a joke thread when I first saw this. I've tried to stay out of this. The simple minded people of the 'no-tips movement' who have posted here haven't really done a whole lot to spread their message, but have instead proceeded to put on this mantle of self-importance, grown delusions of grandeur, and proceeded to insult/talk down to a fairly sizable, and necessary, part of the workforce, while generalizing them into one, so-called inferior group. I can't really ignore that amount of stupidity, so I'll address this accordingly.

Servers/waiters (or 'beggars' to the ignorant) don't make an actual 'wage' that is worth mentioning. It is understood that they MUST rely on tips to supplement their income (employers spell this out in black and white with great insistence, so that there's no confusion). NOT tipping merely because you have this bullshit 'royalty' mentality and wish to deliberately stick it to those you see beneath you isn't really anything to brag about, as it makes you a complete douchebag. Since you don't feel that servers/waiters do a necessary or important job, then stay the fuck home and cook, bitch. Or, maybe hit a fast-food restaurant so you can have it your way WITHOUT someone having to come bring you your food (while making $2-something an hour).

Next, we'll go over the 'generalizations' that certain ignorant people have decided to use. Poor job choices, lack of education? Yeah.....try students working through college and/or med/law/grad school. Try people working multiple jobs to make it. There are a plethora of reasons why people join the service industry. It doesn't make them 'beggars' and they are most definitely not anywhere beneath someone with that mentality.

It's one thing to have a negative view of tipping. It's a totally different thing to insult/talk down to/look down upon certain people because their job relies on tipping. I do hope I've been clear, and while I hope I haven't crossed any lines, I certainly wouldn't regret doing so.
