Couple Faces Jail Time for Dog Attack

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - A couple face at least three years in prison for disciplining their young children by letting their part-pit bull dog attack them.

Joyce Hoskins, 47, and David Hoskins, 46, pleaded guilty Friday to three counts each of assault and were being held without bail.

Investigators said the couple disciplined their 8-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son by allowing their dog Nigel - a mix of pit bull terrier, Doberman pinscher, German shepherd and Labrador retriever - to attack them.

The attacks took place over two years and both children suffered bites that required treatment, investigators said. The children are now in foster homes and the dog has been euthanized.

Neighbor Voight Barnhardt said he called police during an attack on March 19.

``There was a kid crying and a dog ripping her to pieces,'' Barnhardt told The Oregonian. ``It was bloodcurdling.''

The girl required stitches for tears and puncture wounds in that attack, The Oregonian reported Saturday.

Barnhardt's call led to an investigation and the couple were jailed May 25.

Judge Marco Hernandez said he would sentence Joyce Hoskins to no more than three years, two months because she has limited mental capacities. Deputy District Attorney Andrew Erwin said he would argue for a longer sentence for David Hoskins.

Sentencing was set for Sept. 23.

I have heard of some awful things done to children, but this...😱
I'm not sure what the judge was going on in mentioning three years for the mother, but I hope he gives the father a tougher sentence than that. A lot tougher.

I am a firm believer that people like these parents do what they do, because the consequences are so mitigated. Who could possibly argue that a sound and just sentence would be to lock the two of them in a room with Pit bulls, and allow the dogs to attack them until they sustained equivalent mental and physical trauma?

Diminished capacity is used far too often as a scapegoat, to soften the most heinous behavior of people who should otherwise know better. If dog attacks are too harsh, then certainly periodic, scheduled beatings should be appropriate.

Shadow--I think you're on to something. Let's allow the punishment to fit the crime. Who was there to cry "cruel and unusual" when these poor kids were being terrorized?

Let's combine these effective methods for a complete punishment.

1-castrate them and feed it to them!
2-put them in a cage with the hungry angry dogs
3-euthanize all when finished

All of my friends have kids and I keep getting the "Well you're not a parent, so you don't know sh--." My response? "Oh I don't know kids?" (Really? My best friend has SEVEN.) "Hm, then tell me why your kids always end up at MY house..." ("My dad's being a jerk, can I have a ride to the mall? Can me and Paris use the pool if we sweep it? I think I need to go to Planned Parenthood-Adley's been fooling around--will you take me???")

Worse of all is what I get the joy of seeing on the job. Collectors who come to me and say, "will you try and work your magic? She isn't responding to anyone else..." "She" ends up being in her young 30s, was admitted for going into labor, her fifth child, both she and the baby tested positive for meth...All of her kids were taken by CPS...I hope you can understand my frustration. Not everyone is the loving, responsible parent that you are my sweet. 🙂

I would like to take it just a bit farther than suggested... I propose that a specially trained pitbull be called into CASTRATE the father and SCREW the mother (All rights to abortion are revoked).

Furthermore, Let the parents eat dog food for every meal of their incarceration. People like that are sick and need help yet most of them are still fully aware of right and wrong and they make their wrong choices anyway.

This kids have lived in enough fear for their lives. Now the parents will learn the true defination of fear when the inmates learn of the parents atrocities.

guys, i agree about the heinousness of the actions, but, come ON, the old testament 'eye for an eye' bullshit does not cut it in todays society. if your punishments were carried out, this would undermine the entire justice system, and create a system of mob violence the consequences of which would curtail (if not destroy) the liberties of every individual. i fell for the children, but hurting the parents won't heal their wounds. only love and time will do that. let us not hate the parents, but instead pity them, and show loving kindness to the children so that they will not perpetrate the cycle of violence that often so inevitably follows such abuses.

We're the ones who will have to pay taxes to jail these losers. We're the ones who will give them more to live than we have in the free world. Indulging in a little imaginary violence isn't hurting anyone.

Unfortunately the violence they inflicted on their own kids is very real and it's enough to make anyone parent or not, border total insanity with outrage.

Okay, so I get that you don't know tongue-in-cheek when you see it, but I want some of what you're smokin. Since we're talking bullshit:

1. Today's Society - You're right. Today's society is not founded on theocracy (eye for an eye), but rather on conquest. Killing someone only in cases in which they have killed others does not work. It takes too damn long. That's why our predecessors opted instead for indiscriminate mass slaughter, slavery, torture, and genocide. Its so much more...expedient.

2. Justice System - um...huh? I don't even know what that is, and I'm sure you don't either. How can you undermine something that doesn't exist? You're confusing our Legal System with what sometimes happens by accident as result of sheer chance. That's not a system. That's a lucky break.

3. Philosophy of Passivity: Ah yes. The last bastion of hope for the truly faithful. Some people think that goodness (aka, God) will creep its way into the hearts of evil doers and show them the error of their ways. Just ask people like Jesus Christ, Mohandas (Mahatma) Ghandi, or Martin Luther King. I'm sure they could tell you how well that's worked for them.

A situation like this is a near-perfect example for why we must regulate breeding in this country and to sterilize all individuals psychologically unfit for parenthood. I would still also call for the liquidation of the parents by the state.

...and NO, that is NOT a joke OR a fantasy on my part.

...And while we're sterilizing all individuals whom we believe may not make ideal parents, because they've been condemned by some corrupt psychological evaluation, let's recycle our dead into little green wafers and feed them to the populous to cut down on starvation.

Oh no. Wait. I have it. Lets employ clairvoyants to give us hints about murders that haven't taken place yet, and then let's arrest and incarcerate those people suspected of these forseen crimes indefinitely.

Ooooo. Here's an even better idea, and this is exactly on par with your sterilization suggestion; let's just pin all our problems on one race of people. We could make them wear some kind of mark to show that they are trash. We could lock them up in labor camps, and just to make sure we always have room for more, we could kill a few hundred thousand at a time until all our worries are over.

One of the unfortunate truths in todays legal system is that there are some unethical District Attorneys who place their own record of a high conviction rating above the facts of the accused possibly being innocent.

I do believe that the majority of convicts in prison are guilty of the crimes committed but I also believe that there is a high percentage of innocent people serving time as well.


While my fantasy says "What's good for the goose is good for the gander", my reality says that the judge should come down hard and heavy on the parents.

I hope your reality turns out to be what happens. But I'm thinking it's not a good sign that the judge said he would only sentence the mother to three years, two months. Of course we can't really do any of the things brought up here, but there has to be a more fitting penalty than three years of jail for this crime. Maybe at least the "father" will get something more.

To me, a high percentage would be 30 percent.

As of 6/30/2003 there were 2.8 million prisoners in local, state, and federal jails. I doubt that 850,000 are innocent.

In my opinion, if 10 - 15% of the prisoners in prison are actually innocent then this is a high number. I 30% would be excessively high.

Even using your numbers (2.8 million) at 1%, that would mean that 28,000 innocent people are incarcerated. I suspect the innocents rate in prison is probably closer to 5%. Using the same 2.8 million prisoner quite, that would mean that 140,000 innocent men and women are currently being incarcerated for crimes trhat they didn't do.

For that reason, I believe that one must be 100% sure with no reasonable doubts at all before one recommends castration, sterilizaton, or other perminent forms of punishment. At the same time, if there is 100% solid, unrefutable evidence and the person is guilty - let them suffer that fate.

No truer words have been spoken. Our legal system still needs to be tweaked to the side of JUSTICE over WEALTH but is it very true that our current legal system caters to the wealthy.

Haven't I told you many times that this place is filled with people that don't have the sense that God gave to a garden hose? And remember that Tonya Harding is from here to.I actually met her once in the parking lot of a Kentucky Fried Chicken. She was a bitch on wheeles with her two stupid friends in her jeep. I went into the KFC and one employee was crying, and everyone was ticked. That is just how Tonya is. I've lived here for nearly 15 years (except for 6 months in San jose) and I have met groups of some of the biggest dickheads here. To give you an example how stupid this place is, I was down in L.A. for a week, and I met nicer people on the street there than I have ever met here. This is the hind end of humanity here. In fact, all of the friends I have here aren't from here. And to go further, all of my friends don't like to befriend native Oregonians becaue they aare tired of experiencing constant asshole-ness or stupidity.
