Police: Wal-Mart Shopper Slaps Crying Child

A police report said the man, Roger Stephens, 61, of Stone Mountain, had warned the child’s mother, Sonya Mathews, that if she didn’t quiet down the child, he would do it for her.

According to the report, after the mother failed to quiet the girl, Stephens came up to them and slapped the child several times in the face.

The report then quotes Stephens as saying, “See, I told you I would shut her up.”

If ever there was a valid reason to punt an old man across a Wal-Mart... :sowrong:

Well, at least someone took the ball and ran with it.

Out of control children in stores=the most goddamn annoying thing in the world. Not like he curbstomped the kid. Maybe if mommy was a better parent, she would've taken that effort she put into screaming for security and instead used it to discipline her child. Thing is two years old. It's already starting to form and understand words and can walk upright. It's not like we are dealing with a child that has no concept of language.

Yes. But when parents lose patience with their children in public and start screeching at them, threatening them, and slapping them around they tend to just look like they have no control over their kids and it just makes an even bigger scene. So really, it can't be helped. Kids cry sometimes. Sometimes it's in public. This guy just didn't know how to handle his shit, that's his problem.

This is the kind of thing I'd never do myself (slapping someone else's child) but if I were there, I'd have shaken that old man's hand and paid his bail.
:man:

I'd have hooked him up with the best lawyer that dirty money can hire and gotten him off with....

....(You guys are going to love this)....

....a slap on the wrist!

Are you kidding? There are dozens of valid reasons for punting old men across Wal-Marts!

It's amazing to see what people think they're entitled to do.

First off, Just because a child is crying in the store does not mean they have bad parents.. that is the MOST ignorant thing I have ever heard of.

Secondly, having a child that is quickly approaching this age, I know personally how that mother feels. If you've EVER had a child or been around one.. you know they quickly change their moods and could give two shits what you think about it.

If I have to get something at the grocery store then damnit I'm going to, and 95% of the time my child is coming with me.. and if he throws a fucking fit and starts acting like an asshole, you can bet your ass if I can't calm him that I am going to ignore him.. because 95% of the time nothing is wrong and he's going to stop. Get off your high horse.. personally some people should just shut their mouths if they have never been in that situation. You think the parents don't feel like assholes? Think again! You think we fucking want to listen to it? HAHAHHAHAHHA, then your an idiot. This guy had NO right in the world to touch this child, Is his name on her birth certificate? Nope. I would have fucking murdered him.

So, everyone being an asshole about this kid crying in the store and how you think you are way to important to have to listen to it, I swear to god that one day I hope you know how it feels and that when your time comes, someone calls you a bad parent to your face.

I agree.

Granted, my daughter is only 4 months old; however, common sense tells me that if you don't feed into or flame a child's poor behavior it will only dissipate unless there is something completely wrong. Furthermore, temporarily removing something that the child enjoys will encourage good behavior through his or her adolescence. Children need to learn legitimate consequence; when they grow into adulthood and potentially fail in a work environment, they will lose their job not get slapped in the face.

This is not rocket science.

Every person you've ever hit was somebody's child.
Come on...really?

There is a huge difference between a 50-something year old man slapping a two year old in the face, and a couple of teenagers getting into a scuffle in the hallway.

This isn't rocket science.

What if the two year old has a gun to your child's face, and the only way to disarm the gun-toting tot is to slap him in the face? Is it ok to slap the child then?

Better yet, what if he had 12 sticks of dynamite strapped to his chest?

What if the 2 year old lit a cigarette and blew smoke in the old man's face while cursing his dead wife?

A) No 2 yr old deserves to be slapped in the face. Folks, please do not procreate until you understand that. You find a way to calm your child down, remove them from the situation if you need to, but you don't hurt your baby for crying unless you're trying to create a serial killer from scratch.

My thoughts exactly...

Bella... :woman:

What if the 2 year old lit a cigarette and blew smoke in the old man's face while cursing his dead wife?

What if the two year old challenged the old man to a duel, and slapped him in the face with a white glove? Would the old man be able to accept the challenge by reciprocating the slap?

This is a fantastic question.

Maybe they will just fence to the death.

I wonder who would win that fight. The old man has the obvious size and strength advantage, but the 2 year old is probably quicker and more limber.

The 2 year old would beat that ass....we already know who has the advantage in the intelligence category....

I honestly sympathize with the guy. These Gen-Y fuckers raising kids today don't believe in telling their kid to stop...ever. It's ridiculous.

I saw this on the news. It's one thing to have spouted off to the mother. I'm sure many of us have been tempted to do the same on an occassion or two...though (to be fair) they aren't always able to do anything about it even if they're willing to try). It's something totally different to strike a child...esp. when it's not your child. Had I been the mother, I'd have done much more than scream. I'd have kicked his sorry ass.

And what will this asshole get for his troubles? Possible jail time, possible civil action and a lifetime lable as being a danger to children. Good call, jerk! :sowrong:

What...?

You sympathize with a man who slapped someone else's baby, and not once but four times. Really.

I seem to recall crying children in stores (and airplanes and movie theaters) throughout my life, it's hardly a new Gen-Y phenomenon.

And anyone who's ever tried to get an overtired and overstimulated inconsolable toddler to calm down understands what that mom was likely going through. Trying to get your errand run and get your little one home as quickly as possible is something every parent understands; the last thing you need is grown idiots who can't even control their own adult tempers looking down their noses at you. Don't get me wrong, badly behaved children in public ruining everyone's experience makes me just as crazy as the next person; frankly, as a preschool teacher the LAST thing I can handle during my time off is a shrieky little bag of yelling; I've even been known to leave a restaurant over it, my nerves can't take it sometimes. But that doesn't mean I don't feel for the parent who's doing the best they can and the little one who honestly isn't old enough to control themselves yet, and I'd expect more understanding and common sense from people than what I've been reading here. (I wonder if some folks have ever been around a just-turned-two yr old and know what they're actually like).
