I just heard on the radio that Ray Charles has died at the age of 73.

Truly an American original that can never be replaced.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ray Charles, who overcame childhood poverty, blindness and heroin addiction to help create soul music and become one of America's most beloved singers, died on Thursday at the age of 73 after a long fight with liver disease, his spokesman said.
Charles died at 11:35 a.m. PDT (2:35 p.m. EDT) at his Beverly Hills home, the singer's longtime publicist Jerry Digney said. Family members and co-workers of the legendary entertainer were with him when he died.

In one of his last public appearances, the singer-songwriter turned up in a motorized wheelchair for a ceremony in April conferring historic-building status on his longtime recording complex in a rundown part of Los Angeles.

Visibly frail, his voice reduced to a whisper, Charles' demeanor then was a far cry from the wildly enthusiastic performer known to millions of fans for more than half a century.

A prolific musician, Charles has been off the road for almost a year so that he could undergo a hip replacement. Unspecified complications forced him to scrap plans to resume touring with a performance in New York last month.

Charles, a pioneer of soul music whose biggest hits include "Georgia on My Mind" and "Hit the Road Jack," was a multiple Grammy winner who had been blind since the age of 6.

While known as "The Genius of Soul," Charles' music included standards, R&B, country pop and jazz.

IT is a sad day.

My father named me Georgia because of this man's eloquence and emotional gift through music. The power of the song touched him and in turn gave me a name that proved to me that Ray Charles touched all walks of life. I've been serenaded by people every race and age who loved the song and the man who sang it.

Just another fine example that music transcends the petty nature of the human mind.

Rest in peace, my troubadour,
Georgia, known around here as Jo

I first got into Ray Charles Atlantic recordings back in the 80s while browsing in a used record store, I ended up leaving that store with a box set of his music. These songs, recorded mainly in the 50s and 60s are absolutley phenomenal!
I finally got to see "The Genius" 3 years ago at the Litchfield jazzfest. Ann and I sat all day in drizzle and bone-chilling cold waiting for Ray. A little before 9pm, his orchestra came on, then Ray came out a short time after and played his heart and soul out. By this time, Me and Ann were no longer cold, in fact we were both dancing in the mud. And what a fantastic version of "I Can't Stop Loving You"!

Thank you, Ray....for all the great years of music.:bowing:

Every time we say good bye I die a little

Another legend passes on, and what a legacy he left. Feelings like this are hard to express. I'm sure millions of glasses were raised in his honor. Keep rollin' on.

"Georgia" is, without a doubt, classic Ray Charles, but no one, IMHO, ever has, and probaly never will again, sing "America, the Beautiful" like that man could!

He's singing with the angels now. May God bless him!

"I'm feeling sad and blue
And it's all because of you
I could cry, I could cry, I could cry
I could die, I could die, I could die
On Lonely Avenue
Lonely Avenue"

God speed, Brother Ray. 🙁

He really changed the face of music...he combined forms of music that were always kept seperate!!

Great musician...and did it all without seeing the keys he was playing!!

Damn shame...

Fabulously talented! Another legend put to rest...:cry1:

XOXO

they just did the beautiful rendition of America the Beautiful at Yankee stadium in tribute to the fabulous Ray Charles, it is the best version I have ever heard!
