Regarding Misspelling of Words In Posts

I type 60-65 WPM. I try to correct my mistakes before I hit the button...but sometimes, I'm kinda tired.

Posts with a multitude of misspellings I tend to skip. It literally hurts my eyes to have to undergo such an ordeal.

As far as intelligence goes, I find it to be a poor indicator. My sister's very, very intelligent, but she was always a shitty speller.

My aggrevation with those who horribly misspell comes from a different perspective. Here's the part of the post where one may want to break for coffee, soda, dinner, bathroom,.....you get the point. It's a long and potentially excruciating rant brought to you by kis123! I haven't done one in awhile, I'm long overdue. :wow:

For those of you who may not know, I am a black female. I came from a long line of traditionally uneducated folks; my parents had high-school educations. My mother was trained in nursing school run by her employer; my father had the dubious choice of either going to the military or working in his father's farm; my father ran to the military and educated himself. My grandmother was told in eigth grade that she couldn't stay in school; go home and wait to get married. That was the sign of the then times folks, many had it tough. The one common line within those generations is the importance of education that was denied to them.

Here's something to think about; even with lack to access of education, my family could stand toe-to-toe with anyone and communicate intelligently. These folks were self-taught and determined that they wouldn't fall through the cracks of life. They fought for what students are given everyday and they saw education as a gift and not something to run from and thumb their noses to as it is today.

Growing up, I was not allowed to speak what was then called "slang", now given a language title of "ebonics." I think the American education system is filled with weaklings-no excuse not to teach appropriate english techniques and encourage a firm foundation. I was made to speak appropriate english in my home; my parents wanted me to have the education they were denied. They knew the only way we'd advance as a "people" is to educate ourselves and assimilate into society. I don't agree with the "assimilation" part, but I stand behind the education part 100%. I don't believe anyone should be forced to blend in to make society feel better unless it would be harmful to themself and others not to.

And I'm not trying to insult teachers; they get stuck playing the horrible hand they're dealt with overcrowded classrooms and lack of resources. I know my share of teachers who share there measly salaries with their students in supplies and educational resources.

So when I see people carelessly throw crap on the screen it does disturb me. When young people disrespect the education denied to their ancestors, it does disturb me. When people are too lazy to take a moment to even discover if their word even exists before they type it, it bothers me. There are enough words in the english language that already exist-why add more words that don't just because you feel the need to express yourself at my expense.

Bottom line, if the post is filled with spelling and grammatical errors, I skip it. It shows me that someone doesn't care to express themself in an intelligent manner, therefore I find their viewpoint disinteresting. I'm not talking about the occasional typo, or the hurried post response mistakes-I get those and have a few of them under my belt. I'm talking about someone who writes as if they were raised underneath a rock; if you want respect you should appear respectable, plain and simple! As far as I'm concerned, your point means little or nothing to me if you don't take the time to represent it in an intelligent manner.

I'm not looking for Rhodes' scholars here; I'm looking for depth and intelligence. I personally cannot find it in a post where it takes me 30 minutes to decipher it.

This is kis stepping off her soapbox and returning the thread back to the original owner.......... :ranty:

My spelling and grammar are not perfect, far from it.I do try to correct any mistakes i make when i find them.It is willful ignorance that bothers me,those who have a chance to learn and do not take advantage of it.Some people,as wiz said are better at some things then others. He is better at math, and i have always been terrible at math.

I have a friend in Texas who has been a teacher in public schools for many years, and the number of high school students who have trouble writing a coherent sentence is appaling.

And by the way, while i was typing this in,i found a few spelling errors 😉
Its not a speed contest here folks, take your time and do the best you can.😀

Little spelling errors and grammatical mistakes don't bother me in the least. Its when people speak in "leet" or "gamer shorthand" that brings that little vein in my forehead to a throb.

"PeOlPlE wHo PoSt LiKe ThIs" or ask question like "r u tlksh" and "wut r u dng?" irritate me to no end. If you can't spell the word "you" with all THREE letters, than you are lazier than I could ever achieve.

Sentences composed of all acronyms can be somewhat of a pet peeve too.

Oh, and another thing.....I bet you guys really thought I was finished! :woot:

I just had an interesting conversation with my son. For those of you who may not know, he is 21 years old, autistic, with many learning disabilities and mental handicapps. My son has a handle on his english; he presents himself as intelligently as he is able to be under his circumstances. He is always complimented on his ability to effectively communicate. He taught himself to read at age three. He's not going to Harvard folks, but is very capable to communicate his wants and needs with intelligence. If he can do it, I have little respect for those who aren't destined to live in his often-times confused world.

Now I'm really done with this topic-thanks Bart, I needed this. :triangle:

Yes, Bart, I find it annoying when people choose to not
spell correctly. I'm a voracious reader, and even in the
books I read, I notice bad grammar and misspellings, not
that I underline them, or write to the author, or publisher,
or anything dramatic like that, but they are noticed. And
even with the leagues of editors and proof readers if
the ratio is <.05% I reason that small things are bound to
slip through.

There are certain folks on here whose posts or threads or
stories I skip over because it pains me to attempt to read
what they have written, and to understand it. I actually
understand those sentences which have the correct number
of letters, with the first and last in place, and the middle
ones mixed up far easier on my brain than plain bad spelling.

I also generally refuse more than one written communication
from people, be it IM, email, etc, with bad spelling. I let
them know I only communicate with people who spell out
three letter words correctly. I find that those who can't let go
of that don't write to me, which suits me fine! 😉

Oddly enough, as someone above said, the occasional
deliberate misspelling of a word (like sox for socks, probably
because I was a long-time Massachusetts resident) doesn't
bother me much at all, once I recognize it for what it is.

Well it doesn't bother me too much when people don't spell correctly, unless its a response that merits some kind of point of intelligence to an argument or discussion.

Its hard to believe a person is serious and intelligent when they have way too many obvious misspellings.

Right. My one exception. WAY ghetto, totally unacceptable if you EVER want to be taken seriously in my world...
XOXO

I could care less , I know what their trying to say . When it comes down to it , it's what's said and not how it's spelled ............... " A Non Knitpicking/Nitpicking Zone "

I tend to type in whatever manner is quickest for myself. I care not for how i am perceived for lack of capitalization or punctuation. The substance in it is which matters most. Also remember we have non english speaking persons on the forum

..I don't care...I don't like it when I make mistakes...but others...not a biggy. I don't know where anyone else has come from...or is in their life...but I like reading everyone's responses....so grammar..punctuation...expression...spelling.........as long as I can decipher what they are trying to say....it's all good......No I would not correct them either....maybe ask more questions if I'm not sure....I certainly would not do it here on the public forum and risk humiliating someone... :redheart:
