My aggrevation with those who horribly misspell comes from a different perspective. Here's the part of the post where one may want to break for coffee, soda, dinner, bathroom,.....you get the point. It's a long and potentially excruciating rant brought to you by kis123! I haven't done one in awhile, I'm long overdue.
For those of you who may not know, I am a black female. I came from a long line of traditionally uneducated folks; my parents had high-school educations. My mother was trained in nursing school run by her employer; my father had the dubious choice of either going to the military or working in his father's farm; my father ran to the military and educated himself. My grandmother was told in eigth grade that she couldn't stay in school; go home and wait to get married. That was the sign of the then times folks, many had it tough. The one common line within those generations is the importance of education that was denied to them.
Here's something to think about; even with lack to access of education, my family could stand toe-to-toe with anyone and communicate intelligently. These folks were self-taught and determined that they wouldn't fall through the cracks of life. They fought for what students are given everyday and they saw education as a gift and not something to run from and thumb their noses to as it is today.
Growing up, I was not allowed to speak what was then called "slang", now given a language title of "ebonics." I think the American education system is filled with weaklings-no excuse not to teach appropriate english techniques and encourage a firm foundation. I was made to speak appropriate english in my home; my parents wanted me to have the education they were denied. They knew the only way we'd advance as a "people" is to educate ourselves and assimilate into society. I don't agree with the "assimilation" part, but I stand behind the education part 100%. I don't believe anyone should be forced to blend in to make society feel better unless it would be harmful to themself and others not to.
And I'm not trying to insult teachers; they get stuck playing the horrible hand they're dealt with overcrowded classrooms and lack of resources. I know my share of teachers who share there measly salaries with their students in supplies and educational resources.
So when I see people carelessly throw crap on the screen it does disturb me. When young people disrespect the education denied to their ancestors, it does disturb me. When people are too lazy to take a moment to even discover if their word even exists before they type it, it bothers me. There are enough words in the english language that already exist-why add more words that don't just because you feel the need to express yourself at my expense.
Bottom line, if the post is filled with spelling and grammatical errors, I skip it. It shows me that someone doesn't care to express themself in an intelligent manner, therefore I find their viewpoint disinteresting. I'm not talking about the occasional typo, or the hurried post response mistakes-I get those and have a few of them under my belt. I'm talking about someone who writes as if they were raised underneath a rock; if you want respect you should appear respectable, plain and simple! As far as I'm concerned, your point means little or nothing to me if you don't take the time to represent it in an intelligent manner.
I'm not looking for Rhodes' scholars here; I'm looking for depth and intelligence. I personally cannot find it in a post where it takes me 30 minutes to decipher it.
This is kis stepping off her soapbox and returning the thread back to the original owner..........
