RIP Borders Books 1971-2011

i'm not a Borders fan. It's way over priced. But I'm not big on reading novels anyways... but their cds are over priced.. lol... But I am sad that so many people are going to lose their job. It's hard enough for me to find a job.. now it's going to be even harder since so many other people are trying to get a job.

And I'm sorry for the people that live in cities where B&N is in a hard to get location. Our B&N and Borders are across the street from each other so they're both as easy to get to.

I loved Borders, and still tried to patronize them even though I did/do get most of my books and music used and online these days. Borders was a haven when I just needed to get out of the house, a place right down the road where I'd escape to on a chilly afternoon and just mellow out with a hot chocolate and a scone and a good book all by myself for an hour or two. I'll miss it. Barnes and Noble is lovely but a different vibe.

Showing my age, but... back in the day, bookstores were small and quaint, not like today's 4 story frapavanillacino living-room furniture showrooms... fond memories of idling through (*gasp!) large vinyl record albums and their unique cover art. It was a more visceral way to connect with your purchase... to me, while convenient, today's online purchases are cold and impulsive... and an MP3 is sadly bereft a great art form - the full album cover and sleeve art/lyrics used to be half the fun of the music.

What will we do if the grid goes down? Read the owners manual to an iPad by moonlight?

Buy and Hold a Book, today.

 There was a great bookstore in downtown San Antiono for many years, Rosengren's. It was a haven for serious readers, you did not go there in search of the latest trashy novel. The coffee pot was always on, and if you wanted to sit around and sample different books that was okay too. Sadly, the mega book stores and changing demographics led to its demise long ago. Oh, I forgot to mention the late, lamented Brown's, in Houston. They also closed the doors many years ago.

Some of my fondest memories are of just wandering in old book stores (and our old small county library), just looking at book spines. I would wander and read titles until soemthing would catch my eye. I could spend a day doing just that. At least we are not burning them yet. I read Fahrenheit 451 at a very impressional age. If you have not read this Ray Bradbury classic I recommend it. The movie is okay, but read the book!

You sound just like me. I loved the old library in my hometown. It was in the old post office building, a two story brick structure rather Victorian in apperance. I hated it when they moved into a modern, steril bank building across the street. 🙁

We had an Outlet books or something.. very, very plain. No fancy banner aside from a Generic Plastic Sign. New books every Tuesday. BRAND spankin' new titles. ALL 70% off..

I used to LIVE at that store.

It's gone. 🙁

I try to find book stores the same way I like to find Comic shops.. those hole in the wall places, where you walk in & are engulfed w/the smell of moth balls and old book smell and it's dark and quiet.

.. Bueno. :bubbleheart:

Yes seriously.

I liked them better then B&N myself. I'm finding Amazon more and more useful.

Myriads
Very sad news. 🙁
Yes, Amazon is very useful, and I'm getting to like my Nook, too. (It saves a lot of space and really is readable in bright light.)
I love Amazon.

But when I don't wanna wait, I'd go to Borders.

Now I have to figure out how to get to Barnes & Nobles.

Get a Kindle or a Nook. No waiting, no traveling (except to anyplace that has WiFi for a basic Nook).

Frankly I'm surprised this thread has so many responses. Borders was 'ok' if you wanted to just go there and read but they were waaaay overpriced, especially the CDs and DVDs. I'm not going to miss them.

Barnes and Noble is a far superior bookstore in my opinion, it seems cleaner more open and more asthetically pleasing then Borders. Except for the overpriced Starbucks coffee. With any luck some of these buildings that housed Borders can become B & N stores now. Good bye you greedy bastards.

I LOVED Borders. I've always preferred them to Barnes and Nobles. 🙁

I met Charlton Heston at my local Borders many moons ago. He was signing copies of his biography, which I got (of course). I like to think I brought a moment of humor to him, as everyone there was all kissing his butt over his films like "The Ten Commandments" and "The Agony and the Ecstacy". When I got up to him, I was all, "Get your paws off me you damn dirty ape!" and, "Soylent Green is made out of people!"

He shook my hand and thanked me! (probably getting ready to call for security, but still) He was really cool.

So, if for nothing else, I have fond memories of Borders.

In ATL- Border was much better than B&N. More of a selection, great drinks, better atmosphere, and for some reason.... there were always some really cute guys there.

Sales prices and how they treated treachers rocked too. We'll see how the final liquidation sales go. Might be able to scrape a deal or two out for my classroom.

I was always more of a B&N fan myself, not really sure why. What I'm really excited to see if what they do with that huge Borders store in NYC next to Madison Square Garden. I hope it doesn't turn into another Starbucks or Chipotle. :xlime:

I believe it was in a Borders (many, many years ago) that I found a copy of 'Tickle Torture', an erotic novel that made quite an impression on me.

Adieu.

used to spend lots of Saturday afternoons there...gonna be hard to find another good book store...RIP Borders

mocha cappuchino was the shiznit😛

We went to our local borders and they were having a clearance/closeout sale "everything must go". What were they selling stuff at? 10-20% off :-/. What a joke. We didn't buy anything. Hell, even with a 50% discount, everything we looked up was cheaper on amazon!

Yeah, good old Borders, greedy bastards right to the end. Good riddance to them. Buh bye!

Borders had an awesome music section, lot of obscure and import cds. I knew the end coming when they eliminated the jazz, blues, country, and world sections and lumped all the cds together. Plus they stopped ordering anything new or different. In the last few months, Borders sucked for music!

^ This...

Yeah, I think it was a sign of things to come. With more and more people going the download route, it got harder and harder to sell Cds. I'll miss being able to go to Border's and find some really cool stuff I couldn't find at any other brick-and-mortar store.
