Ryan Reynolds IS funny, in my humble opinion....but he suffers from the problem many funny guys in Hollywood suffer from: They have to work with lackluster/crappy scripts.
Go read Ran Reynold's writings - he wrote an article once for Entertainment Weekly. Wonderfully witty and hilarious. Fantastic. And definitely written by him. I'm reading this and thinking, "Why can't we see THIS Ryan Reynolds in a movie?!" HE needs to write the damn movie! ...and not be constrained by the typical Hollywood paint by numbers Scriptwriting 101 rules that make every movie....look like every other movie!
Me and Lily Haze were agreeing in her thread in the images section recently, about how funnier the older comedians were.
With the way Hollywood has been for a long time, and it even affected movies back then, you could NEVER make a movie like the Marx Brother's "Duck Soup."
I think he's funny, but when he's thrown in a standard romantic-comedy....he's only as funny as he can push against the confines of the script handed to him.
I felt the same way about Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Kevin James, etc. You see them in a stand up, or interview, and they're hilarious......then you watch them in a movie, and you're like....ehhhh..that kinda sucked.....
And THIS is why Green Lantern bombed so bad - the script SUCKED. As did the music and most of the direction......
.....still pissed about that! GODDAMMIT!!! You find an excellent leading man in Ryan Reynolds, the perfect casting of Mark Strong as Sinistro, a fantastic Peter Saarsgard as Hector Hammond, shit, even Tim Robbins was a great choice... and then throw in a silly side-kick roomate, give him this ring and have him do.....almost nothing, just whine about how scared he is for half the movie....sheesh!!!
