I am currently listening to a song that I consider one of the saddest ever sung. It was written by Bob Dylan but is so much more poignant and sad when sung by The Band. "I Shall Be Released" is that song. What makes it that much sadder to me is that the lead singer (Richard Manuel) committed suicide a few years later. I love sad songs and I'd love to hear some of your favorites.

mario winans..i dont wanna know..about how he loved a girl so much, that it kill him to find out she cheated on him, and he told her..if she did never to tell him..its sad, as i know where he comes from.

theres another song, pearl jam did it..back around 99..it was like a cd to benefit sarejaveo?? or serbia?? hmm..well anyways it was a sad song too..i know it was a remake of an older song..i cant remember the name..but it too is very sad.

Wanna hear an even sadder song than "I Shall Be Released"? Check out "It Makes No Difference" by The Band. This one is absolutley heart-wrenching. Rick Danko sings it like he's truly hurting bad from breaking up with a girl. The tune is a masterpiece.

Naveltkltr, would that song by Pearl Jam be "Last Kiss"? 'Oh, where oh where can my baby be/the Lord took her away from me...". That was originally done by J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers. Another sad song that sends shivers up my spine when I hear it is, "I Can Never Go Home Anymore", by The Shangri-Las. The harmonies sound like a ghostly wail.

Hands down....

My Immortal.

"Amazing Grace" on bagpipes is a tear jerker as well...

yes! thanks featherfingers! very sad song. I have the amazing grace on bagpipes done by Drop Kick Murphys

Bagpipes are great! I love "Mull Of Kintyre", by Paul McCartney & Wings, especially because of the bagpipe part of the song.

A couple...

"Love, Me" by Collin Raye

"Can't Cry Hard Enough" by the Williams Brothers

"Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg

"The Dance" by Garth Brooks

Mimi

Mimi, I heard that Dan Fogelberg has some form of cancer but I think it's in the early stages. That's what makes a lot of songs sad... when we lose the singers who sang them. I hope Dan makes a full recovery. Another sad song, to me anyway, is "Empty Garden", by Elton John. That's his "eulogy" for John Lennon.

Yeah, i liked the dance..when they played it for the firefighters who died doing their job during 9-11..it did bring tears to my eyes, cause id of rather been there..than out on a football field playing..

FDNY....343..always remembered

here are a few:

honey, by bobby goldsboro

patches, by clarence ???

you were always on my mind, by willie nelson

the ghetto, by elvis

where have you been, by kathy matea

yesterday, by the beatles

the living years, by mike and the mechanics

teen angel, -by ?????

Baron, Clarence Carter sang "Patches" which still makes me cry and I've heard it a million times, and Mark Dinning sang, "Teen Angel". Another sad one that makes me cry just thinking about it is Peter, Paul & Mary's "500 Miles".

One of the saddest songs I've ever heard I believe is called "Good-Bye My Friend". I think Linda Rondstadt sings it. The lyrics are something like "Good-Bye my friend. Know I'll never see you again". It's about someone who died.

I'll Agree With Honey..

One hell of a good song.

Garden Party (Rickey Nelson ?) is sad,

Arms Of An Angel

I'm not sure if I agree with SAme Auld Lange Syne because that's more about growing past your youth, rather than an outright loss.

However, I think Leader Of The Band by the same singer is extremely sad.

Cat's In The Cradle (Harry Chapin)

On the other hand, there's a song by Kenny Chesny I think it's called There Goes My Life that ALWAYS brings a big smile to my face.

This one you hear commonly at funerals and wakes... "On Eagle's Wings." They sang it during the funeral of my exboyfriend who died of cancer. There was no way I could have gotten through that whole song, although I did try. So, I just sat there, bit my lip till it almost bled so I wouldn't bring attention to myself by starting to bawl in the middle of the audience, and let the tears roll down. I never have, and never will, be able to listen to that song without getting tears in my eyes. Although, it isn't really a sad song, but a song about rising to heaven to meet your God. But I guess the thought that that person was no longer there for real was what made it so sad for me.

Another song, again from my exboyfriends funeral, is "The River" by Garth Brooks. His older brother played the song during the funeral to kind of symbolize his life. His 5 year anniversary will be next Friday. He would have been 29.

Prinny, my deepest sympathies on your loss. Who performs that song, "On Eagle's Wings"? I love sad songs for some reason. One song that gets me is John Lennon's "Grow Old With Me". He never had the chance to grow old, of course, which makes the song that much sadder. And ever since they played "Ave Maria" at my Grandmother's funeral, I love it yet have a hard time hearing it now. You ought to hear Stevie Wonder's version.

Feather - I had not heard that. If it's true, then I certainly hope he makes a full recovery as well. He's a truly gifted musician.

Tron - Yes, I agree Leader of the Band is very sad. I'm not sure what it is about Lange Syne that makes it such a sad song for me. It's a combination of the melody and the ending where he watches her drive off and the snow turning into rain. Always makes me cry.

I forgot to mention two more that always get me. "Where've You Been" by Kathy Mattea, and "If I Had Only Known" by Reba McEntire.

Thank you, Feather. I would be a puddle of "what if's" if I had not met a wonderful man in the old AOL tickle chat room who brought a smile to my face. And he knows who he is!! 😉

As for the song, I can't remember off the top of my head. You could probably find it in the song books at just about any church.

OMG~I'm exhausted and so can't remember but I think the guy's name is Bryan McKnight and damned if I remeber the lyrics or name of the song. (I'm such a doof sometimes.) It'll come to me. 🙄
XOXO

Damn, people! I've got tears in my eyes just from reading your replies! I think I've stated before that "The Diary". by I forget whom, does it to me every time! Another, both title AND writer/performer slip my mind is. I think, "Never Want to Fall in Love Again" (One lyric goes "I don't ever want to feel the pain/ of remembring how it used to be") Can't get halfway through that one without dropping my head down, and sheding a few tears.

Cheer up sweetie~Bread did "Diary" 😀
And I remember mine now! Brian McKnight, "One Last Cry"
XOXO

how about "all out of love" by air supply?

or speaking of bread, isn't "everything i own" pretty darn sad?

actually a new song out..called over and over..its by the rapper nelly and country music star tim mcgraw..its about how they cant look at a girl they love cause it hurts too much that shes with someone else and that they hope she comes back to them the same as before..right now..i feel that way.
