A few things to think about.........

The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.

He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waitin! g when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm howitzer. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.

He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and ! wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He somet imes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life -- or take it, because that is his job. He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death then he should have in his short lifetime.

He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed. He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through hi! s body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years.

He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood. And now we even have woman over there in danger, doing their part in this tradition of going to War when our nation calls us to do so. As you go to bed tonight, remember this shot. A short lull, a little shade and a picture of loved ones in their helmets.

Thanks Ray. I did my bit long ago. This post is the absolute truth in my opinion.
The reason I wanted to thank you is for reminding me what I owe to the nineteen-year-olds who are serving now.

A former Air Force girl and a good friend sent it to me.....made me pause a moment to reflect....🙂

AMEN!

A short while back, Jesse Ventura had that talk show.Once
I heard him say "We send them to war before they are twenty-
one - isn't that child abuse?"

In World war two, wasn't the
average age like twenty two, or, twenty five?

And it seems to me in any war our countrymen or women fight
in, you will always hear of crappy veteran medical attention
stateside. That's some bulls**t!

Or how about...poor misguided fool lured by the promise of the opportuntiy to go to college and improve his station in life.Manipulated and despised by power hungry rich assholes like Bush and Rumsfeld. And now putting life, limb and sanity on the line for a misguided and endless war the American people have been duped into by lies and deception? All for the glory of a rich kid who never worked a day in his life and was too much of a coward to go fight himself?

I guess the British fighting man isn't scary? Ray,thank you for that post For the record I did two years in the Army reserve and ten years on active duty in the Air Force
For those that never served in the military, what gives you the right to criticize us and belittle us? 😡 Is it the government not giving us what we deserve,or a bunch of whiny self-serving individuals who have never served, either poloticians or regular people, who are jealus of the attention we get?
GOD BLESS ALL MILITARY MEN AND WOMEN ALL OVER THE WORLD

He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years.

A tribute to military men and women over the years and you have to bring present day politics into it. If you feel you have been duped that is a topic for another thread. Leave it out of this one.

I am always amazed at how young military people are...

I am almost 30 and would be considered a geezer if I joined up today...

I nearly joined up after 9/11 but I was advised by someone in the armed forces that I was "too old" to be starting now...

Our wars are fought by children...and that is throughout history!

Great post Ray!!

Thanks Tom...the whole point is to remember and support those that fight for their country on a daily basis. Not just our country, not just our people, but all freedom loving people everywhere.

Let's remember, pray for, and support the men and women of the world who put their lives on the line for the rest of us. The fact that they are doing so is enough. Dwelling on the politics of war is not what this particular thread is about.

I am a small and precious child, my dads been sent to fight
The only place I'll see his face, is in my dreams at night.
He will be gone too many days for my young mind to keep track.
I may be sad, but I am proud. My daddys got your back...

I am a caring mother. My son has gone to war
My mind is filled with worries that I have never known before.
Everyday I try to keep my thoughts from turning black.
I may be scared, but I am proud. My son has got your back...

I am a strong and loving wife, with a husband soon to go
There are times I'm terrified in a way most never know.
I bite my lip, and force a smile as I watch my husband pack.
My heart may break, but I am proud. My husbands got your back...

I am a soldier serving proudly, standing tall
I fight for freedom, yours and mine, by answering this call.
I do my job while knowing the thanks it sometimes lacks.
Say a prayer that I'll come home. It's me whose got your back.

Leave Bush out of this thread. He doesn't deserve to be here.
Yes, we were children. To us, the guys in the outfit who were twenty three were considered vastly older than us, and of another sphere, of sorts.
We were children, and we looked at life as children did...we all thought we were completely invincible, none of us would ever get hurt. We were children, even though some of us experienced and endured adult maladies...like alcoholism. Or venereal diseases. AIDS in those days was a very new and lethal concept...
I want you all to stop and think of the men and women, the BOYS and GIRLS who are over there, fighting in Iraq in the war that the person who doesn't belong here was happy to announce was over. Think of the kids in the local high school, the seniors, with maybe just a little bit less peach fuzz. Think of the faces of those kids. Take those faces, and think of them being ambushed in their humvees. Think of them possibly getting killed, and their bodies burned and mutilated by cheering mobs. Children.
There are plenty of people out there who talk of supporting the troops, hanging a flag from the aerial of their cars, stuff like that. Very few people can conceive of the every day life of our children in arms.
They come from all walks of life, from all backgrounds. A familiar concept, the concept of diversity in a group environment. Some of them are children who already have children...the very young women who have children here at home. The back cover of the current Reader's Digest has a painting of a young woman in BDUs and her Kevlar helmet, resting against a wall, reading a Mother's Day card she got in the mail. It's very touching, it tells all.
I think my point is that they're not just soldiers. They're people with faces, young faces, and lives. I think of them every day.

I fought in Desert Storm, and been in the Army for 8 years, and I appreciate that Ray. However, I would be remiss if I do not agree with why we are there this time. Last time was legitimate. This time, for greed. Sad times indeed:sowrong:

Extremely well spoken knox.....I think of them every day as well.

NT..Though I understand where you are coming from, this is not the thread to do it in. There are plenty of other threads for that...

This one neither trashes nor supports any administration. It also doesnt lend support to or deny the need for war. Consider it a politically neutral thread where we can think about and pray for (if you like) the people who serve for freedom in the world today.

Great post Ray!! [/B]

Yes that is a great post!

Thinking back in my time in the service, I remember alot of kids in my boot camp batallion were 17 year old kids still in High School. I was 18 and just graduating HS. There was one guy there that was 23 and we all called him "fathertime".

My husband retired from the military many moons ago and at the time, he was the closest thing to a father-figure some of those boys had. Mostly due to the fact that he was over 25! The called him "The Judge."

Just think, after WWI, we stopped fighting long enough to breed a new generation of soldiers and go at it again in WWII. So very sad. And I saw online that a Senator has recently proposed reinstating the draft!

It's a new world with new technologies yet we still send our babies out to kill their babies. Wars wouldn't last so long if the ones fighting had a chance to see the world before they put on their uniform!

Eye opening, it is. 🙁

I'm all for supporting the men and women in uniform. The reply posted by Knox the Hatter was very touching. You don't think I care about these 'children at war' as Knox calls them? My heart bleeds for them. But if you think the military , war and politics are not connected, you are very, very sadly mistaken...

That's the point Ray! I dispute the argument that the war in Iraq is fought over and for freedom. That's Bush's line and I don't buy it AT ALL. By saying that, you yourself make this a political thread by aping Bush's rhetoric. We may never know the real reasons for this war but I guarantee you it's way, way more sinister and un-noble than 'freedom'.

Some people love to say that someting is 'un-political' when it really IS political. Politics affect every area of our lives, whether you like it or not. The military is not a-political, neither is war, neither is suggesting that the war in Iraq like world war 2 and others is being fought for freedom. And you add 'for people all over the world'! If that's not a political statement I don't know what is.

Learn to read. Nowhere in my original post is the war in Iraq mentioned. Until YOU brought it up it was a generic military thread. I will ask you again to keep political opinions out of here and take note that there are soldiers serving throughout the world for freedom today. THAT is what this thread is about. Nothing more. Let's keep it that way. All off topic posts will be deleted from this point on.

Oh for the love of God.
This was a thread about military personnell.(Part was about that even in youth they are doing their best and working in a system that rarely recognizes the age issue. That among other aspects, but that's the one that I was drawn to!)

Why is it that NO ONE around here can just let something nice be said without being an utter jackass about it???

Someone quick! Post a thread about motherhood so someone can whine and bitch and moan that their mother sucked and that mother's are not what they used to be!

Or maybe...
CARS! A thread about CARS! Oh holiness! Cars! Ruining the environment! Making it hard for drunks to get home at night!

or perhaps...
BABIES!!!! Babies smell sweet, but ARGHHHHHH...the diapers in the landfills! Overpopulation!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not a matter of whether of not you agree with this topic. It wasn't a topic for DISCUSSION!!! It's a thread for recognition of a group of people.

Be intelligent enough to figure that out please! I'm sure even my child could sort out the difference!
😕 :sowrong: 🙄 Jo😕 🙄 😡 😕

Bless you Joby. Some people have to bring politics and hatred into everything. They don't know how to take things at face value. 😉
