Indeed you were. And the original play in which the character Mack the Knife (in German: Mackie Messer) appears was The Threepenny Opera (in German: Die Dreigroschenoper). The play made its debut in 1928. The author of the play (but not the music) was Bertolt Brecht. 😀

Yes, the play was a musical and one of the songs in it was the original German version of "Mack the Knife." ("Mackie Messer" in German.)
