Indeed you were. And the original play in which the character Mack the Knife (in German: Mackie Messer) appears was The Threepenny Opera (in German: Die Dreigroschenoper). The play made its debut in 1928. The author of the play (but not the music) was Bertolt Brecht. 😀

I did not realise the song was based off of a play. 😀
 
Wow. Neat how the music from the original sounds so similar to the Bobby Darin version. 😀

As far as I know, the music was composed by Kurt Weill in 1928 to go with Brecht's play and was never changed. The lyrics were translated loosely into English, and the first English version I could find on YouTube was by Louis Armstrong. 😀
