Yes refraction and reflection. The way light interacts with an object. Light interacts with metal differently the plastic though both have reflective properties. The difference is in the amount of specular shine you get from plastic.

Math also comes in with fractals.

Just imagine a simple object like a cube with its 12 edges. Rotate by some angle in two different directions. To calculate how much of each of the edges is visible to a particular viewer with a fixed eye you need trigonometric formulas. 😀 😛

Somebody had to write the software to so this kind of thing. :yowzer:

It can be yes takes a long time to get the look just right. Playing with reflection and refraction and other properties and also the color and textures themselves. 😀
