It was a small touch of genius, no doubt, ...
... that moved the poster known as kurchatovium, to name his new thread The Self-Referential Thread. He defined it so ...
The purpose of this thread is to talk about this thread.
Then, on December 26, 2002 at 6:30pm, he toddled off to find his medication.
It is the the simple designs, the ones the elegance of which may go unnoticed in their early days, that survive. Henry Ford built over a million Model T's. MacDonald's lost count forty years ago of the number they have served.
The Self-Referential Thread has passed ten thousand pages. In moments, as I write, the thread will record one hundred fifty thousand separate entries.
Many have been trivial, if the constant re-affirmative well-wishings of long-term friends can be called trivial. Still, in eleven years, one month and twenty-two days, many odd and wondrous posts have passed under the Gate. Kurchatovium himself believes that the Thread at half its current mass, may owe its existence to an Admin known affectionately as HDS.
His Divine Shadow has moved on, but his name goes back to Day One on the Forum. Most of a decade ago, the Forum was "pruned". That is to say that Staff Members reviewed the Forum and its Sub- and Child Forums looking for abandoned threads and deleting them. This is a trusted job, one that calls for considerable and highly developed Moderator's skills.
His Divine Shadow saw the Thread. It might have been a day or two since the last seemingly pointless post in this apparently pointless Thread.
He posted. He moved on. And the milestones have continued to fall away.
Whither on, the Self-referential Thread? Kurchatovium is a young man, living in an age which has devalued age. The Thread does not properly belong to anyone else. If he should falter, I and others would step in for the short term. If he should fail, perhaps this Thread should go with him.
Kurchatovium is a diverse man. He works in technology and in the earth at his feet. He nurtures tropical plants in a temperate region. He watches over his parents, honoring the reversal of roles. So far, it's Kurch one, windmills zero. Bet the trend.
Come on by and drop a post of your own. Odds are it'll still be there in four thousand sixty-eight days, in the first thread on the TMF to reach twenty thousand pages and three hundred thousand posts.
