Yea I can see them.

It makes sense why there was no fleet of ships protecting this area. The ship would likely have slowly decayed just like this landscape.

My guess is its an entity or entities created in a research experiment that began to destroy the whole operation as they dergraded the very matter in the labs and techs. The reward for their success was destruction.
