The Self Referential Thread

Greetings kurch, mils, and nt!

I think I might be napping for an hour or so...but I'll definitely be back later to chat!

😀 😛 :bunny:

Talk to ya'll soon!

You're welcome, Kurch. Arthritis is one affliction I don't have (yet).

Well its just not Arthritis now although thats the main problem. I have suffered some nerve damage from two chemical spills long ago which compunds the problem. Plus I think my borderline diabetes is not under control like it once was. I have cut out as much carbs as I can in the hopes that might help. Growing old aint easy. lol.

That's the saying, growing old is no fun at all but consider the alternative.
😀 😛

Exactly so, there comes a point where death is a welcome relief from chronic pain. One of my uncles who died of lung cancer was past that point for the last week of his life. 🙁 🙁 That was a long time back, 1982.

Very sorry about your uncle. 🙁

Yes cancer is one of the nastier diseases pain wise. Thing is even the meds to combat it add tot he suffering. All cancer treatments basically rely on the fact that the patient can affor to lose more cell then the tumor. There are as of yet no really magic bullets for cancer. We are getting there but slowly. 🙁

😀 😛

Thanks, Kurch. It was a long time ago. Much progress in cancer treatments has been made since then, but it's still rightly dreaded.

You are most welcome. 🙂

We have made progress but like I said all treatments rely on the principle that the host can afford to lose a lot of cells while the cancer can not. There is as of yet no real equivalent of an "antibiotic" for cancer. We are getting closer though as we find out more of the subtle diffferences from a cancer cell and a regular cell.

😀 😛

There is also talk about targeted radiation treatment that will kill mostly tumor cells and few normal cells. 😀 😛

Yes there is something called a Neutron Knife. It uses I think several beams of weak neutron radiation which all focus in on where the tumor is. The idea is that beams are not powerful enough to hurt regular cells by themselves but when they all focus in on the spot of the tumor then they have enough power to kill cells. This is very effective for deep brain tumors.

😛😀

That sounds very promising, presuming they have a good 3-dimensional image of where the tumor cells are. 😀 😛

Yes you need a precise location of the tumor. With MRI though that is not so hard.

Thing is there are not very many Neutron Knife or Blade facilities now as they are rather expensive to set up. 🙁

😀 😛

That's the way new medical technology goes, at first only in the major teaching hospitals with huge grants. 🙁

Not to get too P and R 😛 but this is one reason why national health care worries me. Research and pioneering techniques often suffer in such a system. 🙁

Yes, less research goes on in places that already have nationalized health care. 🙁

Quite true. Thats cause research costs lots of money. Thats why private industry often takes gambles in order to come up with new drugs or new machines in the hope they will have something they can make money off of.

It rained here all day so I didn't go to the park. Otherwise fine, Zod. 😀 😛
